I always soak them in cool water from the tap, don't think it makes much of a difference. You should be more concerned with getting the boiling times correct, or you'll end up with burst, starchy grains.

One common mistake people make with rye and wbs is failing to rinse the grains before soaking with HOT tap water. By using hot water for the rinse and to begin the soak, not only do they absorb water better, but the heat 'pasteurizes' the rye, preventing germination. Those who rinse/soak in cold water often have germination problems. RR
Try using the search function more before posting, people get angry about it on here haha. RR is a very reliable "trusted cultivator" so i often search rr with whatever i am looking up. For example, to find this quote for you i looked up soak rye rr and found this within a minute.

That is true, yes, but those mold spores that haven't germinated yet will be killed off during the PC cycle anyway. The grains will still absorb the water if it's hot or cold, I haven't noticed much of a difference anyway. And full hydration of the grains is done during the simmering/boiling period as well.

I've never rinsed my grain, that shit takes too much time. I use dirty ass wbs too. No straining floaters either. Just add water, soak 12+ hours, simmer, steam dry, load up jars.
Don't make it harder than it needs to be.

it's not the mold spores he is talking about germinating, it's the grains themself
