cloning?
    #2212084 - 12/31/03 02:50 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

i just grew one big-ass shroom (almost 8 inches tall!)and i want to clone it. would all the shrooms that come from this clone be exactly the same size & etc? or would there still be all different shaped shrooms?

No -- all the genetics in all of the mycelium and the fruitbodies are the same, in one casing/cake/etc.

The mycelium and mushrooms is all one organism. No matter which part you clone it'll be the same. Fruitbodies are already rhizomorphic, though (mushrooms don't sector) so it is a good idea to clone fruitbodies, and larger ones are easier to work with....

will cloning produce different shrooms than a spore print from the same shroom?

Wouldn't a lot of the mycelium have a little genetic variation, as it was produced from multiple spores and not just one? i mean if it were produced from just one spore than i can see all the mycelium and all of the mushrooms being the same genetic material, but not if it's from a multispore source. otherwise, there would be no genetic variations amongst the mushies.

A bit -- it depends on chance. The genetics all still come from the parent if using spores, but there will be differences because of crossing-over during meiosis.

The size of mushrooms (along with most everything else) is more a product of its environment rather than genetics.

I've heard that the genotype is kept complete in a pf cake, and not with bulk substrates, does this have any effect?
