I figure this kind of thread has been made before, but this can be an updated version. I co-own a roofing company that only specializes in metal, we do anything metal related from plain sheet metal fabrication up to standing seam metal roofing and even copper and tin if asked for but it's mainly a standing seam metal roofing company. We have two portable panel forming machines that we take out to jobsites and run the metal to the qaurter inch right there on the job. I'll upload one of the copper ones I did recently just because I'm happy with it but can always upload more projects of mine if people are interested.
But what about you guys/girls, what do you do? Is it what you always wanted to do? How'd you get into doing it?
Copper job I just did a few weeks ago, I was pretty pissed when I remembered that I had forgotten to take another picture after I got done polishing it all off and I had already taken my lift off the job so excuse the fingerprints and smudges as they're not there anymore

Currently do nothing. Was a retail manager, got fired for absences (despite doctors note explaining the situation which they fucking asked for). Kinda still pisses me off. I was damn good at my job, I got promoted ridiculously fast because everyone in charge of that decision/input recognized how hard I worked. I passed so many other people up in line for that promotion, and then they fired me because I was having some issues that were medically documented and out of my control.
Anyways I'm waiting to go back to NDT for the plants. Far better job. Can be boring as fuck. Some days I spent literally 12 full hours just sitting in a trailer or a room. But I was getting paid 15 an hour (22.50 once I hit overtime) to do it. I was bringing home close to 6k a month after taxes. So yeah, I'll sit there and do nothing all you want. When we did do work, the conditions sucked ass. I was employed during the deep winter months. Then we're spending 12 hours out in freezing weather. High wind, sleet after 10 minutes you can't feel your hands or your face, and nothing you can do to stay warm.
--------------------
With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline

No, it's not. When you combine school with work then yeah, you're working.
Like so many of my 18-25yo friends do.

Licensed Fiber Technician w/ Power Limited.
Going to go for electrician next. More than halfway there with my PLT.
So as for now, unemployed, but moving onto a hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) contractor. Basically anything from wiring up banks, hospitals, server racks, business/commercial and I'm not sure if the new job does residentials.
Pays 26.50/hour in MN, PLT will bump me to $35. They want to see me work for 4 weeks before the pay raise. I might manage engineering I don't know.

Under the table wiring got me 40-60 an hour depending if the people looked like they were struggling financially or not. I let a few slide here and there if I was in the area.
The companies out here start at 80 minimum even for 29 minutes of work, then it's another 80 up to the hour mark.. 160 for 60 minutes of work is absurd, and no house gets wired in an hour. I'd trade wiring for stuff like free winter plowing or mowing my yard. It's fun as hell until you're balls deep in a 64 pair punch block for an elderly home or new apartments. Thankfully the newest places just go fiber and we don't have to deal with that shit anymore. Apartment racks are so much easier than punch blocks or individual ONT's on house after house after house.

But what about you guys/girls, what do you do? I am currently an AutoCAD Technician for a small land surveying company in a small town in Texas
Is it what you always wanted to do? Not really. I wanted to be a cartoonist ever since childhood, but would love anything involving art and/or music.
How'd you get into doing it? 14 years ago, I quit my job in car rental and I guy who had just moved in to the apartment complex I was residing in and eventually I would hang out at his place and poke smot and play video games offered me a job in surveying.
My past jobs include: Drywall hanging/finishing High rise maintenance man Mobile DJ Portrait photographer Hospital maintenance man Hospital central services Day Spa manager Car Rental agent Insurance Replacement manager for car rental company GPS Technician GIS Tecnician GIS Analyst Construction Inspector Warehouse Manager for a cable company AutoCAD Technician

Dilsnique actually answered all the questions.
The reasons I got into asbestos removal were simple. Being a drug dealer didn't work out too good, I had no real skills or education beyond HS, my felony convictions were not a problem getting hired, decent money with on the job training(started at $15/hr) lots of druggies/boozebags in the industry...
Plus I was getting into this line of work at the right time. The EPA had just released new regs concerning absestos in schools, and the industry took off. http://www2.epa.gov/aboutepa/signing-asbestos-hazard-emergency-response-act I did learn to love my job though. Makes it a lot easier to show up every day. . . .

co-owner of trading/ manufacturing co. specializing in glass wall/storefront hardware. One of my designs is the locks used on all the Ally/ Commerce/ TD bank storefronts....some of the earlier ones, I actually made myself. Our hardware can also be seen at the United Airlines Terminal at LAX and at the International terminal at JFK...Also, the sky box suites at Lucas Oil stadium in Indianapolis all use our sliding hardware. These are just a small fraction of what we have done. This is my 29th year in this business . It pays the bills.

My biggest money makers are fantasy sports betting and I got a little business providing google maps and yelp reviews for businesses who mostly either need their bad ratings fixed or new businesses who want more exposure. The client I picked up yesterday pays me $5 per 70 word review (I don't write I outsource the work for $.75 per review). Easy money

I'm a general contractor, I suppose.
I'm self-employed and do just about anything carpentry-related.
Right now I'm painting the outside of a small house, last week I was working on a full apartment remodel and doing another electrical job, before that I was doing some tile work, and the list goes on and on.
My dad has done a lot of standing-seam metal roofs, he said he liked it and wouldn't mind doing it again.

I machine and finish prosthetic parts, bolts and screws that go in peoples bodys, prosthethic limbs etc... Ive recently added "electrapolishing" to my resume doing part time ventures for a small christian owned company where I take those very parts that i was involved with on the machine side of things at my other company and do finishing processes such as acid soaking, sand blasting, and electra polishing. One time the FBI shipped a part stating that it may be used for computers or nuclear enrichment...my boss was like lol wut... but anyway I take pride in my work after we are done doctors recieve our parts to put on peoples bodys so we are the last line for quality control. I have learned many things about metalurgy through these experiences...

Pretty sure its gonna be just landlord again due to a fuck I did yesterday. When it comes to salaried work I just fucking can't... I inherited a condo. My only source of income is rent from it each month. I get 2400 a month. No mortgage though

I am a paralegal. Right now, I'm jumping from temp job to temp job trying to get something permanent, but no one is hiring.
They say that unemployment is below recession levels and I call super bullshit on that one.

The unemployment rate is down because they don't count people who have run through their benefits or who have quit trying.
As far as your profession goes there is a glut of lawyers looking for work. Why pay a paralegal when there are starving lawyers desperate for a job?

Because lawyers aren't trained as paralegals. I recently had a temp job where I worked with 3 attorneys. We all did the same job - reading contracts. All of the lawyers in the room listened to me and learned from me.
Lawyers interpret the law, paralegals write up the docs and make sure the attorney is barking at the right person about the right thing.

Are you trying to tell me that paralegals know more about the law than lawyers? Or that unemployed lawyers can't do paralegal work?

What I'm telling you is that the paralegals write up the documents and the lawyers make sure they're kosher and the wording is just right for the outcome.
Lawyers don't know how to write contracts and stuff because that's not what they're trained for.
And yes. Unemployed lawyers *shouldn't* be doing paralegal work. That's like asking the bartender to come back in the kitchen and take over for the head chef.

Let me break it down for you:
XYZ Insurance is suspected of overcharging ABC hospital based on some recently rewritten policy. The attorney tells me to research these charges and bring in what I find. After reviewing my research, the attorney may tell me to get Statute 123 for their review. After reviewing that, now the attorney mostly drafts a strongly worded letter threatening legal action. Phone calls go back and forth. Pissing contests are had. Finally a resolution is reached. I review the settlement, bring key items to the attorney's attention, and it's up to whoever to sign the docs.
That is how 99% of legal issues are handled.

currently unemployed with a seasonal job that starts in october as a full time snowboard instructor - last year i was part time. i originally wanted to be a pyrotechnician when i was in grade school but considering i dropped out of high school AND college TWICE thats kinda outta the question at this point, but im pretty happy with being a snowboard instructor - it barely pays enough to get bye but its so much fun and sometimes i get paid to just ride around the mountain all day cause there arent enough students - also you get a like 780$ season pass that goes to 10 mountains and we get free lift tickets to most of the mountains in CO if we give them a days notice
i got into it because i was on probation and my PO was forcing me to get a job so i figured fuck it i might as well do something i love
i got back into it this season full time cause it was such an awesome job with awesome people and just such a relaxed vibe. plus 90% of the people we teach, kids or adults, WANT to learn which is why its easy to teach most of them because they are actually into it and pay attention to every thing i say or do.
but this is my "office" i guess you could say

What you're telling me is that she paid enough money to buy a house to get a degree so she could do a job that really only requires an Associates degree or certificate.
Mazel tov. May she have all the luck in the world recouping those law school costs on a paralegal salary.

We didn't pay anything for her undergrad degree at all since she had a full ride and the law school gave her a significant scholarship as well. All merit based. The idiotic bar takes several months to post results so she is currently a JD but not admitted to the bar.
I bet you paid more to be a para than we did for her to be a lawyer.

What I've done in order: -Dishwasher (14 y/o) -Guy in a strawberry suit to advertise a smoothie place -CVS cashier/stock boy (first "real" job that was taxed) -Restaurant for ~3 years (Busboy, counter, delivery driver, waiter, manager) Basically everything but a cook -Quick Lube Oil Change technician (Mobil1) -Mercedes Benz Dealership Valet Edit: Mechanic at Firestone franchise. Only a couple weeks though. -Vehicle A/V (systems) installer for CC and BB over the course of 3 years. -Construction laying vinyl wall protection mainly but it was "general construction" -Used car "dealer". Basically just flipped cars from local auctions and it's the longest I held a profession. -Bait boy/deckhand on a charter fishing boat.
I quit the auto industry to pursue fishing which has been a great passion my whole life but my attention started going towards vaping (e-cig) industry shortly after getting on the boat. For the last couple months I've been working and now managing at a new vape shop in the area. I absolutely love it, it's only something I became interested in when I quit cigarettes which was only 6 months ago but everything about it intrigues and helps me.
I'm so happy every day that I can try save a cigarette smoker by having them switch over. I really think working in the vape industry will keep me busy for many years to come.

Is being a paralegal really what she wants to do forever? If so, have at it and I wish her the best.
I'm not trying to argue with you. I completely broke down and cried today when I got home because I realize I failed at life. I got treated like a moron, my car broke, the temp agency fucked up my registration so I'll get paid late, and the rent is due on Tuesday. Most of my drive home was talking myself out of self harm and suicide.
Thanks for reinforcing that I have failed at life. You're a real prince.

I work in medical insurance reimbursement. It's a really good & secure job with decent pay and perks. I've done it for a few years and really enjoy it. Not my ideal job and definitely wasn't at the top of my career wishlist when I was a kid. I stumbled into an entry level position and advanced pretty quickly before moving around companies.
Growing up I wanted to be a comic book artist, writer or video game programmer. It's kinda funny how things work out sometime.
I also enjoy selling secondhand goods through a couple different outlets and that helps to pad my pockets with a little extra change so I consider it a part-time job.

without 401k at the very least, and ideally a pension, most people of our generation are going to be homeless when they hit retirement. I know so many people who are retiring and the ones without 401k can't do shit, not jack shit. they take home like 1200 from social security, they pay their rent, buy their food and thats it. they work for 40 years and then they get to live like they never worked at all

There are decent alternatives to a 401k that will help to ensure you can retire comfortably but I would agree that most people will be unable to comfortably retire especially since social security and medicare will likely crumble in our lifetime.
I think one's ability to retire has a lot to do with how financially-responsibly they live up until the point of retirement (make sure your house is paid in full and there isn't any major debt)
I'm sure I'll be able to retire without problem when (if) I reach 65 but my life will be an accumulation of smart spending and frugal living.

I work with my State highway dept, I plow highways and interstates in the winter maintain roads and bridges in the summer. I like it, i mostly drive a dump truck and make 14.75/hr. health insurance, retirement, extra savings accounts and employee perks and discounts...paid sick, personal, and vacation days off. Being outside in the sun all day has its challenges but my biggest problem is this chick that has been put with us, a 21 year old spoiled little princess that needs constant gratification for doing nowhere near the same amount of work the rest of us guys do, and always bragging about using men on weekends parting at mardi grass, and getting other people fired for false claims of sexual harrasment...seriously why the hell hire a 21 yo princess for a job that requires sweat, strength, and balls. Don't get me wrong ive worked with before and still will any chick that can do a equal or good job...but if she cant do the job then she shouldn't be there no exceptions.

trippin, try to keep an eye out for job fairs at a university where you live. CDOT are always at job fairs at colleges, you don't have to be a student to attend a job fair too.
or i guess you could just look up their HR department... generally to get any cool job you'll need some similar experience first, why should need to work a few year with them be such a deterrent?

On the East coast we get blue claw best served molting but also hard with a bib and a mallet or in a cake. Dungeness is pretty much entirely West coast. We almost never see them here.

Ah! Thanks for answering. I was watching Gordon Ramsay's "The F Word" and he went crabbing with a group of men in a Scandanavian country (I forget which one) and he commented on the freshness of the crab they caught in comparison with what is normally offered by the grocer so I kind of thought different crab have subtly different flavors based on species and freshness.

yeah im from baltimore and id never heard of dungeness crab until i heard about them on the deadliest catch on discovery but blue crabs steamed and caked in old bay is the shit! also super messy because like zappa said you use a mallet sometimes to get through the shell (in a jam the handle of a butter knife works pretty well too)

nah i mean like its basically impossible to work in the area that i want to doing the howitzer shootings and helicopter bombings, id have to go back to school for pyrotechnics most likely and then work at CDOT being a CDOT bitch for a while, then after a few years id maybe get a chance to drive the truck with the howitzer but the chances of even that are slim to none - i watched a show on a local CO channel about the avy control people in CDOT and its basically impossible to get into the avy team unless you went to college for pyrotechnics and had a bunch of avy classes under your belt

Warehouse work, I load and unload trucks.
Thought I graduated but never got a philosophy credit, taking it online. Got four years of free college with an academic scholarship at my state school but that ended so now I'm working full-time until I can put a B.S. on my resume.

I snack on it all the time. I work at the packing table sifting out all the bad stuff and bones, etc. A lot of it has been garbage lately i think crabbing season starts in december. So all of the stuff were doing has been frozen for a while and gone bad but there are always orders to fill but
So I'd guess January-february.

Professional graduate student & stay at home husband for the last year. It's actually what I told my guidance counselor I wanted to do. So I guess I'm living the dream. Before that I was an electrician and a satellite communications technician.

I have a degree in electronic systems and was an electrician for a year. Cool gig, though go union, don't waste your time nonunion.

What are you going to school for now? Something related?
Too late. I'm already non-union and have been for over 10 years. I have a goob job though. I only have 2 coworkers and a cool boss. I'm moving to a new state in a few months so I might switch over to a union job. I'm not really sure though, why is union better?

lol my bad. I was nonunion and my friend was union and made 5x more then me doing easier work with less qualifications and less hours and way more benefits, and they actually worked on things with the power off! wow! i got the job through a friend just to hold me by when I got out of the military and ended up doing it a year, but if I did it long term I'd absolutely go union. not to mention union hours actually count towards something (journeyman, etc.) while nonunion doesn't.
associates was electronic systems, my undergrad was environmental science and master's is organizational management. i'm a mixed bag. cool you have only 2 coworkers and a cool boss - i had about 45 spanish speaking coworkers, and I don't speak no spanish - didn't like the place much.

Hmmm. I'm not sure what an organizational manager does, but it sounds like something I would excel at.
Working with the power off would be nice sometimes. And you probably don't have to do stuff like grab primary lines without hot gloves. Or hang fans while standing on the very top of a 22' step ladder.
