Malt, honey, Karo or dextrose in the media will be caramelized. That makes it harder for the myc to colonize and easier for bacteria to eat. Don't go 90 min for agar.
Are you certain of this? Ive PCed many plates for 90 and havent noticed this. And ive only just started using grain water.

Don't do that.
Ah, didn't see the whole new page of people saying don't do that.

Yes. Its more of a problem with LC especially plain honey or malt lc as there is no starch like there is in PDA. But its not ideal, you will see stronger growth if you don't caramelize the sugars.

First set of Mini Rounds loaded with red milo grain water agar into the sterilizer.

Fitted the lids with a dime sized synthetic filter disk for gas exchange.

If 2 layers of surgical tape can protect our agar from contams and survive a PC run, why do we bother with SFD in our grain jars?

How long do the plates remain sterile? I plan on PCing the night before, store in SAB (or fridge?), and then go hunting. Will this work?

I actually did try micropore on grain jar lids a bit. There are a few problems, with it. First is that the pore sizes are bigger with micropore so there still is a chance of a small spore like penicillium working through. But on a plate it would be easy to spot and transfer away from. This is about a 1-5% chance of happening so still not much of a vector.
The biggest issue is the grains will stick to the tape and get lodged up in the hole. This causes two problems, first it greatly restricts GE. Second it makes it much easier for bacteria to grow through the filter and contaminate the jar.
Because the media never has a chance to come into contact with these plates we do not need to worry about those two latter issues.

Fair points, especially about noticing a contaminant on the agar and not grains.
Regarding the grains being stuck, couldn't you split the layers between the inside and outside of the lid/hole and take care of that issue?

Maybe but by that point I had moved on to SFD and really like them. I did try square of tyvek just large enough to cover the hole and then the micropore over that to hold it all together. It worked really good but I still prefer SFDs.

For sure. I still have enough whole SFDs to make 20 more grain jar SFDs so I'm not worried. I did make a few Muda bottles with a square of Tyvek in between the ring and lid before with success.

I wonder what the difference in micron rating is between Tyvek, SFDs and surgical tape.

Does the entire plate have to covered in tin foil or just the top (as to keep the micropore from getting wet)?

I bought 3 sheets of polyester felt at Michael's yesterday, spent two hours watching the season finale of Deadliest Catch (skipping commercials) and cut out an enormous pile of filters for jars and enough quarter-size filters to satisfy my needs for a long, long time. All for a buck. We're never going back to struggling with paper tape and Tyvek.

I used microspore tape on my pf tek jars and it was a big mistake normally I loose a cake or two here and there occasionally but this time I lost 90% of my jars to some blue bacteria it' made me rethink my sterile technique but luckily I was told to use this tek and I just wanted to say thx pasty for posting this and even answering the pm's I sent u now I know for shore if what I'm working with is sterile and I just love working with the agar bcause the possibilities r endless. Whether u use the mycelium from the agar to inoculate grains or by making a li or lc. Bcause of this post I can now inoculate like a thousand jars from one syringe and I just wanted to say thx

stack the normal rack. fill with water. place 3 wide mouth 1/2 pints. stack the 2nd rack.
put all the pasty plates on top, then put a glass/metal lid to stabilize them. pc 45 mins.
if i do 24 or more plates i do something a little different with the 2nd rack.
1 TIER

if i do two tiers. ill put the glass 1/2 pints on the bottom of the pc(or do something similar to what you do with metal bands to raise the first rack out of the water). put the pasty plates on that rack. then stack the 2nd rack on top of those pasty plates(this holds the 1st level plates in place). put the 2nd level of pasty plates on that. then place the glass/metal lid over the 2nd tier to hold them in place. 2 TIER
