Hip hop has been growing on me in the past few years. I know Dr Dre's The Chronic was said to be really good, something I never owned but we all know the hits in it. Juvenile's "Project English" has grown on me. I can't really think of any hip hop classics other than the MTV artists and their video hits. I can't even say if Snoop Dogg had a good album other than a few good songs/hits and videos. I'd guess some N.W.A. and Eazy E would be some of them? I'm ordering some NAS "Illmatic" and the first Wu Tang album (36 chambers). I'd think most of the Wu Tang guys' solo albums are good as well? I'd think the 80's was a bit tacky so I'm going for the 90's hip hop instead. I listen to XM Satellite's Backspin so I know a bit about some good hip hop songs but not so much as far as full album goes. I can tell you that Juvenile's "Project English" was good from first to last and it came out in 2001.
I've gotten into some U.K. Grimey hip hop stuff as well like the ones on the Vice Records compilations called Run The Road. I guess recommend me a good hip hop compilation since I'm sure there aren't that many good full length albums out there (even 2Pac's albums was said to be full of fillers other than the hits, yet it still sold millions). I have the Run The Road compilation (British Grimey compilation). The first one was good, I just ordered part 2.
I've gotten into a few instrumental hip hop artists as well on Mush Records.
I guess what are some good hip hop from west coast, east coast, or southern? Not sure what are some good hip hop artists considered "Midwest"? I'd guess Eminem? I'm not familiar with the Chicago hip hop scene, I'm not sure it ever made a breakthrough the way East and West coast have (then Southern), etc.
I've been getting into some "white boy" hip hop as well. Everyone knows Eminem is good. I don't own any of his albums. I've heard some Yelawolf. Who can forget Vanilla Ice? I have the first House of Pain CD. I know the hits of The Beastie Boys. As far as independent white boy rappers, I think Cage is great. "Depart From Me" was a good album, but I haven't heard his "Movies for the Blind" which was touted as his best work ever. Just ordered it. I think there are some great "underground hip hop" artists out there that I just haven't discovered. I guess I could start with some compilations?

And of recent The Game but his last two albums were shit, The Documentary, Doctors Advocate, LAX and the Red album were all good.

Ever listen to these great albums from the 80s? Eric B. and Rakim - Paid In Full Public Enemy - Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo - Road to the Riches Big Daddy Kane - Long Live The Kane De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising MC Shan - Down By Law Boogie Down Productions - My Philosophy EPMD - Strictly Business The D.O.C. - No One Can Do It Better
Some great acts from Chicago include Common, Twista, Crucial Conflict, Kanye, Lupe Fiasco, Rhymefest and Chance the Rapper. Some acts who I think are even better are some of the local acts who haven't broken out: Modil, K-Kruz and Coppertop.
Some of my favorite honky rappers include: MC 900 Ft. Jesus Atmosphere Royal Mudd Sage Francis Aesop Rock Paul Barnham El-P

Aw man I'm jealous of you OP, getting to discover hip hop for the first time. So so much great music awaits. I'll only recommend a few things (mostly 90s-00s stuff) but you'll find what you're looking for in time.
Outkast - ATLiens and Aquemini Goodie Mob - Soul Food Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury Digable Planets - Blowout Comb Lil Wayne - Dedication 2 Curren$y - Pilot Talk Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid m.A.A.d City Gang Starr - Hard to Earn Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die Common - Like Water for Chocolate Madvillain - Madvillainy UGK - Ridin' Dirty Souls of Mischief - 93 'Til Infinity
Gonna cut it off there, list ended up a little longer than I hoped but you should find something you enjoy in there.

Thanks Hex, almost forgot there was so much out there. I'm familiar with most of those artists and some of their songs since I listen to XM Radio's old school hip hop channel called Backspin.
Curious where does one rank Naughty By Nature or Onyx? They had some hits but I'm not sure if their whole album was "dope". I've read the Onyx history and I think their albums all received great raves. I think 50 cent got his start by being a guess on one of Onyx's song, if I'm not mistaken?
I guess Onyx would be considered "hardcore hip hop" and not so much "pop hip hop"?
I think there are some good underrated Latino rappers like Big Pun and Kid Frost? Oh and I almost forgot about Cypress Hill, I think they are considered Latino rappers, right?
I think Eazy E's "Real Compton City G's" is a bangin' song and I'm dumbfounded why it's not as heavily rotated on XM's Backspin.

what do you guys think of Necro? I think he is a white rapper that has legendary status as much as Cage. Both collaborated in the early 2000s I think.
