End of the world
    #2210479 - 12/30/03 06:38 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

America loses 3000 citizens in a man-made disaster and the world is coming to an end. Iran loses 30,000 citizens in a natural disaster and not a single post here about that as a sign. How do you think the Iranian people take that event?

Can you say "egocentric"?

I think you may have answered your own question

The difference would probably be man-made from natural.

But no, I think the most egocentric thing is to think that we could actually end the world. The world will go on living quite fine without us should we manage to kill ourselves off.

Yea the world would be a better place without man to fuck it up.

Unless, of course, we rape it in a horribly destructive nuclear holocaust.

Life will still go on, in some form. There have been 5 major extinction events in the Earth's history...in some cases over 90% of all lifeforms were exterminated.

We can only destroy ourselves, not Life.

What if there is a being more powerful than humans and the Earth who decides to destroy us and/or the planet?

That's why Bush is so harsh on the environment. Because the earth is the ULITMATE weapon of mass destruction!! It must be destroyed.

I agree with you. It's pretty messed up that nobody seems to care.

Well that's an entirely different story

The difference would probably be man-made from natural.

There is technology available right now that can cause earthquakes to happen. LINK Isn't it conveniant that Iran had an earthquake at this time when just a couple months earlier the U.S. government was threatening them? I think I'm gonna make a new post about this in the political forum.

Can you say which group of people aren't "egocentric"?

Isn't it true that all groups of people or individuals for that matter are concerned with their own well being above that of others?

I find nothing especially damning about a group of people interested in themselves.

Are you equating Americans or Iranians with Jesus?

You see... here's the problem with multiple definitions of one word:
Many times we'll only see one of the unintended definitions.
Quote:

e?go?cen?tric adj.
1. Holding the view that the ego is the center, object, and norm of all experience.
2.
a. Confined in attitude or interest to one's own needs or affairs.
b. Caring only about oneself; selfish.
3. Philosophy.
a. Viewed or perceived from one's own mind as a center.
b. Taking one's own self as the starting point in a philosophical system.

It's pretty obvious, to me, that Swami was refering to definition 2 (a. & b.).
But I could be wrong, right?

Yes, you could be wrong.

I looked up the word myself before I answered the first time.

Of course you realize that Ayn Rand thinks that it is quite healthy to be concerned with ourselves first and foremost.  In fact, she thinks that altruism is a farce.  I am inclined to agree with her.

Besides, selfishness is a gradient sort of thing, isn't it?

I think most of our concerns radiate outward from the center.

Ourselves, our families, our local communities, our country, our humanity, extraterrestrials.

I don't know about Swami or you but I am a little more concerned with my next door neighbor than I am with someone from a different state.  Similarly, I am somewhat concerned with what happens to all humans but I don't give a fig what happens to maggots or snails.

I guess I am a shellfish bastard.

Happy New Year Sclorch!

Can you say which group of people aren't "egocentric"?

All groups are egocentric. But apocalypse types usually speak of "the end of THE world" instead of "the end of MY (or my sub-group's) world".

It is not merely semantics. It shows a distorted or fallacious view and any statements following that declaration are bound to be highly suspect.

Not at all. I was near the epi-center (Santa Cruz) of the 1988 California 7.2 quake in which a dozen people died. I had to listen to apocalyptic talk for quite some time.

I understand what Ayn Rand is saying. If we are egocentric, it actually benefits society at large. See, I am not affected by what happened in Iran. Not that I don't care, but I'm not motivated to do anything about it.

However, people who have an interest in oil or goods or whatever they get from Iran will help with rebuilding or first aid or whatever because they stand to gain from their efforts. Those people are self-interested first, and care about Iran, second.
