Shittiest Rock band

I think a lot of rock music is shitty and I'm seldom a fan of rock music in general and prefer other genres like EDM and rap (call me a custy or mainstream moron who listens to mainstream music and has shitty taste in music for all I care) . I almost exclusively like only Pop Punk, some Punk Rock, and Psychedelic Rock within the rock genre
I hate a lot of contemporary rock music, it just sucks. I can't name any specific bands or sub-genres of rock music that I dislike because I find the music so boring and uninteresting that I don't bother to look up or know the name of the bands I dislike. I think I dislike The Offspring and a few other bands like them and sound like them and its not just Punk its a a lot of other genres of rock. I just don't like that kind of rock at all and that kind of rock is basically a huge amount of what the majority of rock bands play... and it sucks for me so it basically means I dislike the vast majority of rock music.
I think the band I dislike the most in rock is Green Day. Fucking suck and are shitty sellouts. They are just really shitty all around, their music sucks and their style sucks. I always liked blink-182 over them in every way even though blink's brand of pop punk is way more mainstream and poppy but in some way Green Day manages to be bigger sell outs and be shittier in every way then blink-182

I never cared for green day either, they started as punk, ska or whatever. Rock gets old due to being over played. The dead are good because there is still so much I've never heard. I like some ambient music for the head trip, but that's a slow production genre.
Perhaps some better music will come forth. I wouldn't expect much from my generation, class of 2000. Seems many of my age produce folk type music, with a touch of rock.
I can't stand rap, although some trip hop is ok. I like rhymes I just don't care for much of rap culture. However, I would listen to some what I would call anarchy rap (anti establishment genre).

What exactly is selling out? Green Day writes songs about what is relevant in their lives. They are musicians. Their music grew over time just like how over time they grew into adulthood and sometimes everything you believed when you're younger changes & no longer feels right. What are musicians supposed to do, write songs about beliefs that they no longer hold true. If anything that is selling out... Faking it so you can keep the large fan base that you started out with. Have you ever thought maybe it is you who sold out on Green Day? Just a thought... I'm not trying to come off as a complete asshole snob Green Day fan.

There's a lot of shitty bands out there. I don't think any are as overrated as The Beatles though. I know that's not a very popular opinion but I really don't care. It is my opinion their music is shit, yet everyone talks them up like they are the king of all rock, making them extremely overrated.

I used to like green day. After a while all of their music got annoying and I just realized I didn't like their style of punk rock. I use to love the album Dookie but now that album screams annoying whiny typical 90s pop punk garbage for skater dipshits. It's not that's what I use to be but I simply find their music irritating and uncomfortable to listen too.
It might have something to do with the fact that I use to listen to Green day in a pretty shitty time in my life aka my emo/angst phase back in freshman year when I was depressed and listened to angsty pop punk shit like blink-182 and MCR to bring meaning to my life. However it's weird how I ended up eventually hating green day and MCR after I got out of that phase and continued to be a blink-182 fan. It must be that green day sucks more for me on more then just "ew I can't believe I listened to those bands". It must mean that green day is just shitty.

I used to think the sAme about green day, but idk I was high one day and one of their songs came up on the radio and I really enjoyed it, been a non greenday hater ever since.
All the rock coming out these days tho makes me wonder wtf is going on.. but I figure it's just not my cup of tea or I just simply do not understand it or connect with it in any way.
I love most music overall tho. Music is music, when u start to play instruments or try to write songs u gain more respect for all the musicians whether they are disliked or not. In the end it's just music.

Never said they were better. A lot of the good rock is probably better then most edm or rap combined but in my honest opinion I prefer edm and rap over the vast majority of rock. You might think edm is trash but I love edm and consider it my preferred genre over rock. It's just my opinion man.

Hey! My six or seven year old self disagrees with you vehemently. My mom took me to see KISS in at Capital Center in Landover MD (DC basically) in 1977 (I think) for the KISS Alive II tour. Shit was badass! I was eight by then.
Soon though, I discovered Zeppelin, Emerson Lake and Palmer (Tarkus!), Sabbath etc. and there was no looking back. So my 10 or 11 year self and beyond, agree wholeheartedly with this assessment.
But for a couple of years I was the right age to enjoy the hell out of KISS. Maybe their albums should have a label "for ages 8 and under". I even had the comic book that had their blood in the ink - sure wish I still had that sucker.

Most of these bands aren't even rock which shows how bad it's gotten. Rock is so bad that 'indie' bullshit bands take their place.

I know that the grateful dead had a professional songwriter that wrote lyrics for nearly all their songs. Wether the grateful dead were sell outs or not is up to the person I suppose since what one may consider selling out, another may consider progressing as a musician. What I, myself consider "selling out" is when someone sacrifices their being as in their beliefs, ideas, morals, etc (all things that they hold true to themselves) for monetary and/or materialistic gain. Of course this is just my humble opinion.

You know who Hoobastank, Poison and KISS are, even if you don't know that you know. Poison and KISS especially have music that is very prevalent in movies and TV shows and such.

I know KISS. Who the fuck doesn't know those face paint wearing clowns who stick out their damn tongues. To be honest I never had much to say about them, I have never heard their music and barely knew they were a rock band. I just know that KISS existed and it was those face paint wearing rockers and that's it.

Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. Yeah I've heard that song. It's so generic and so cookie cutter of the music from that generation that I literally can't identify a specific instance of when I heard that song or tell it apart from a bunch of other songs.

My Chemical Romance is also pretty shitty.
Can't stand emo/angsty shit that pale fringe sporting suicidal teens listen too all day. They have good songs but I hate the style and subgenre.

So many shitty bands out there. There are the obvious candidates like Green Day, Nickelback, Kiss, recent Metallica... I actually kind of hate the Doors for the most part. They're just dull dull dull aside from like, two songs. Same with Nirvana

I don't debate music with people because it's all personal preference, it's pretty pointless but I like all genres, as long as the song has meaning, good lyrics and shit.

That's territory I've almost never ventured into at all. I use to like Sum 41 a lot which is like pop metal/melodic metal and I got down to a lot of their hardcore punk/metal shit that they had on their Chuck album but metal is something I've just stayed clear of for the most part. I can't imagine myself being that into music as dark and hardcore as metal unless it's melodic like Sum 41. Just not my thing, I think I've listened to Five Finger Death Punch before and enjoyed it but I can't see myself being int metal

Butt Rock
The origins of butt rock can somehow be traced to grunge like pearl jam (I think eddie vedder is the father of butt rock), alice in chains, stp, etc, and sadly in a way even to nirvana (forgive me, kurt, it's not your fault). To dig even deeper I think butt rock has its roots in bands like ac/dc, kiss, and again regrettably black sabbath (think of butt rock as the digested byproduct of a person who consumed black sabbath at one time). Butt rock at its peak gave us green day, bush, metallica, and later bands like puddle of mudd, disturbed, and staind. Subgenres of butt rock include rap-rock like limp bizkit and linkin park, numetal bands like korn, and full-on fag rock like nickelback and creed, whom you could call the kings of butt rock.
Now if we acknowledge that there is a lot of shitty rock out there, including butt rock, pop-punk, the ridiculous kind of metal, the really whiny 12 year old boy voice emo shit, etc.... If we dig a little deeper to search for what we actually like, we may find that the genre has more to offer than at first glance. Personally, I like a lot of psychedelic rock, proto-punk, garage rock, post punk, some prog rock even, but I'm picky about it. I also like jazz and funk and lots of awesome danceable music. But it's not easy, you have to like finding good music and accept that what comes on the radio sucks for the most part.
I think electronic music as a genre to be into exclusively is such a cop out. I don't know, I just don't find it that interesting compared to a real band. But if all I had to compare it to was butt rock, I'd probably agree with you.

I fucking hate Sammy Hager...
As well as Keith Richards and the stones...
And I hate led zepplin..
Green day was never even part of the east bay/Berkeley punk scene, they oogled those guys, they got a few shows at Gilman street and had Jesse Michaels from operation ivy do some artwork for them and help out on 1039/smooth, but green day sold out a scene they were never part of...
When rancid got big, there was not as much of a backlash because Tim and Matt had been in operation ivy and really were a staple in that scene, at least the "lookout records" style punk portion of that scene, but I'm sure bands like filth/blatz, grimple (who were from New Mexico but relocated to the bay), man is the bastard, dead Kennedy's, etc...never accepted green day, the actual scene never accepted green day...Though green day did fit the crimpshine, Mr. T experience, brents TV, kurupted peasant farmers ,etc...style that was comming from the bay at the time...
... the last punk show I went to was "star fucking hipsters" at the blast-o-mat in denver n March of 2011... .
Now im more about art, when punk rockers joke about the only difference between crusties and hippies is the music, it's actually true, because I get called a hippie all the time, and the only thing I changed was my style in music, I listen to music of all genres now, though the grateful dead and the doors have to be two of my favorites right now, as well as eyedea for hip-hop, and I dig a good deal of psybient stuff..
...Though the last time music was actually art was the psychedelic rock of the 1960s and before, jazz was amazing, old jazz was the first stoner jam ...since then all music is, is exploitation, they market these pseudo-subcultures with assembled bands, it's not real art, it's an image, an image that's for sale...
But seriously the people listed at the top of this post, I hate as musicians and as humans...
I hate Ted Nugent too...

I just never liked rock that much to go to a concert. I remember I told myself I would go to a blink-182 concert or show if they ever came around here but sadly they broke up and they never really came around here. I lost interest in rock completely and got into edm and ever since then EDM shows and nightclubs have been my thing. I go to plenty of festivals and nightclub shows but I have never been to one rock show.
The crowd is probably shitty as fuck at rock concerts. People from the pre-festival/edm era say that all concerts especially rock concerts at that time were a bunch of psycho hateful violent fuck sticks who were shitty to be around. Rock concerts and concerts and festivals in general were like hate rally's and riots basically, then that all changed when the edm scene started coming around and taking over festivals and shows and then things switched up and about "peace love unity respect" and now everyone at concerts is chill and accepting and cool and treats people with respect for the most part. You can call that shit custy all you want but I prefer to be around custys then a bunch of shithead rockers.

I've been to dozens of them and they were nothing like that. Not one. What's EDM?
"In addition to that, I told Moby, I prefer the kinder, gentler Millennial generation that goes to EDM events, compared to the fistfighting kids I dealt with a decade ago at Papa Roach concerts.
Moby can relate.
“I did Lollapalooza in 1995, and the lineup was Beck and Sonic Youth and Hole. It was very gentle. It was the post-Nirvana era. Indie rock was still introspective and thoughtful.
“Then something happened in the late ’90s, and it became Limp Bizkit and Disturbed, and you’d go to Lollapalooza or some festival, and you felt like you were taking your life in your hands. There was so much aggression and anger.
“My friends — we started referring to modern rock as rape rock, because it felt so misogynistic and angry.
“It got to the point at some of those festivals where it would be like 80 percent angry dudes and 20 percent terrified women.
“Now it’s nice. When you go to Coachella or Lollapalooza or EDC, it’s 50 percent men, it’s 50 percent women, it’s generally a lot friendlier, more celebratory, more respectful. Culturally for me it’s been a really welcome shift.” http://m.reviewjournal.com/columns-blogs/doug-elfman/moby-marvels-electronic-dance-musics-rise

Like I said man it's just not my thing. I could probably fit in seamlessly at a blink-182 concert or a similar pop punk concert like that because of the nature of the music and the kind of people it appeals to but I can't see myself vibing well in other rock shows. I couldn't even fit in a Green Day concert because their fans are shitty and annoying fat kids and weirdos. It's just not my scene. I would love to go to a Dead concert and I know I would love the crowd and vibe well.
I'm just not into that music and my point is I wouldn't vibe well with the crowd. Those aren't my people man. My people are people who rage, dance, and roll their asses off all night at Fests and nightclubs. Even if it's custy and even if that scene is infested with kandi kids and the kind of socialite douche bags you see at your typical Vegas club it's still my scene.

Dude I have tried it. I was so into rock 4 years ago. I liked all those shitty bands like MCR, Green Day, The Offspring, Lit, and Sum 41. I don't like any of them now and view 4/5 of those bands as complete shit. The only band I ended being a fan of in the long run was blink.

I'm sure there are people here that could give a more thorough definition but that is what I have. "Jam band" music/jamming is basically when a band improvises off of a small set of chords or arrangements for as long as they can take or want to. The musicians make improvises that loosely fit the basis of the set arrangement.

Xplicit relapszzz, part of your problem is simple: you supplement your own inexperience with negative assumption.
For example, you'll admit to never having gone to a rock concert, but you write paragraphs about how much they probably suck. You admit to having never gone to a rave, but you say things like "kandi kids killed the rave scene". None of this makes sense.
Why not clear your mind of expectations and suppositions and just GO? Find out for yourself. You might have fun, and if not, at least now you know for sure.
Not too long I went to my first phish concert. I don't like phish or jam bands, but my fiancé & best friend do. They wanted to go so I went with them. While the music wasn't my thing, I had an amazing time, partying with people I care about in a fun environment. If I had your mindset, I just would've said, "Phish sux and rock concert people are shitty" and I wouldn't have gone and I wouldn't have those great memories of a really fun night. You are missing out on things.

I hear lots of people say rock is dead and it's all been done before. There are tons of great bands doing new things you just have to search them out. The shit on the radio is generic as hell.
It's more like metal but here's a good example of something I think is pretty innovative.
Tesseract Shit my phone won't paste the link I'll try later.

I honestly think music Is dead as an art form, it's the most commercially exploited art form, and the majority of the "realness" has long left the music industry.
I still go to shows, and I have a good time, but every scene is like full of these plastic cookie-cutter versions of the sub-culture the music promotes, rather than be an individual these people will throw on a tie die shirt and only listen to the popular jam bands, only forming their opinions based on what their subculture thinks as a whole...same with punk rock, it's not individual expression any more, it's rows of leather jackets and mohawks, or if it's crust-punk it's rows of carhart clothing and dreadlocks...this goes for any scene, just being a scene means you have conformed to the norms of that cultures expectations of what a "punk" is or what a "hippie" is or what a "raver" is....it was all supposed to be about the freedom to be yourself without judgement, now it's turned into the "freedumb" to conform to an image...
I still love all genres of music and go to all types of shows, but I can still see how these bands promote a set image and market it to these "scenes" of people, and I refuse to buy into all that, it's almost made me abandon going to see live music all together...
I like any music as long as it's true artistic expression, However very little of the music that's out there is...

I actually think it's the opposite because since torrents became a thing there has been a lot less record sales. The ones that continue to put stuff out and tour are the ones that care about the music even though it's not profitable.

I don't see how your post has anything to do with what I said. I guess I should have said I hear people like gene Simmons and Billy Corgan say that rock is dead. I didn't mean to generalize.

Hmmm...I suppose I had not considered the internet's impact on the record industry, and thus the industry's ability to exploit consumers...
Though these "scenes" still really drive me crazy, and to define yourself as a "punk" or a "hippie" or what ever, is an excuse for being an individual, your taking someone else's style, image and ideas and calling them your own, and most people care more about "being punk" or whatever it is, than they do about the actual music, and in turn a good deal of the music reflects this and is just background for an image.
The true artists are out there, but i find them more in writing, poetry, painting, sculpture, etc...other mediums of art predominantly contain the true individuals, the true free thinkers, who are producing this art as an expression of their individuality, who are not worried if their art is conforming to anybody's standards, they are not trying to be "punk" or "hippie", they just are, they are freaks in the truest sense of the word, and it's a distinction they should be proud of, being a freak means regardless of what anybody has to say you did it the way YOU thought it should be done.....generally it's these freaks that start the "scenes", one freak spawns one billion imitators, so even in music I look for the freaks, and regard the rest as cheap imitations.

Damn i like every one of those but the first one haha i was just listening to papa roach earlier.
I like a lot of bands that have been posted here. No rock guys here i guess.
Theyre not a rock band but my FAVORITE band is either Korn or Avenged Sevenfold. Both tied.
Idk if there are any bands i hate that i can think of right now. I grew up listening to rock. Im open minded when it comes to music, this is just what i listen to most.
Almost forgot Seether...also tied with the other two

I was kinda into them a while back... But I lost absolutely all respect for them due to this cover:
That shit is just fucking atrocious. It could very possibly make a top 10 list of worst rock covers ever.
I have no respect for musicians who do covers but can't even come close to doing it honor. None of them are really ever spur of the moment. They've practiced it, and to unleash that level of suck on people, despite having already heard just how fucking shitty your attempt is, is disgusting.

Have you ever listened to the Toys in the Attic album?
Bon Jovi sucks ass
Toys in the Attic is the only good Aerosmith album. Actually, I'll even go as far as to say "sweet emotion" is the only good aerosmith song. I hate that band. But that song is pretty alright
I also think Kiss is a terrible excuse for a band. If we're talking older bands, I also absolutely hate all of those 80s cock rock bands with songs like "she's my cherry pie" and "pour some sugar on me"
As for newer bands? Well linkin park is probably the worst shit I've ever had to listen to. Anything that falls into the 'butt rock' genre as I described earlier in this thread - nickelback, creed (thanks STP and Eddie Vedder for inspiring these guys to make such shit music), disturbed, staind, etc etc.
On Aerosmith, you're saying that their only good album was their 3rd album and their only good song was on the first album. You may have been confused because Sweet Emotion was released as a radio single several years later after Toys in the Attic made them popular. And yeah, Get Your Wings is their best; they peaked early.
I'm right with you on Bon Jovi being bad and 80's hair metal as horrendously bad. I'm a bit confused on why so many people are hating on Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam. To me they are one of the only post 1990 bands that has the staying power of the classic British bands that lasted for decades.

There are a few slash solos which are epic, november rain comes to mind, but other than that I think GnR blow. Sex pistols only got so big because they were some of the first punk rockers, or at least the ones that brought it mainstream to the UK, but I had the album Never Mind The Bollocks or whatever it was called, it was rather horrible I thought.
I have only heard a handful of songs from those other artists and don't like any of them.

I love classic/blues rock and just really can't stand any of those bands - so to me, they totally suck. There are many worse bands out there, but I just particularly don't like any of the one's I listed. I was also trying to list more serious/famous bands, not bands with 2 singles that nobody gives a shit about anymore, because there are an endless amount of these "shitty" bands.

It's his voice. And I always thought the Stones were a conglomerate and crap mix of all their peers at the time of their 'best' albums. Other bands did the music they were copying better I guess is what I'm trying to say (everyone was copying everyones music in the late 60's).

That question was worded strangely, but if I need to listen to some white boy blues I'd rather play some Led Zeppelin, Cream, or the Beatles (or 50 other late 60's bands)- all of which did the Stones better then the Stones could. I know it's an age old debate - I just never found anything the Stones did interesting.

Many people hated Stryper.
1980s Christian hair metal guys, what can possibly go wrong?
They are doing their best to praise the Lord and it comes out so corny and "clean", my Christian friend calls it an abomination, I find it hilarious, camp, and listen to it on occasion.
I have a folder for music that I don't necessarily like but, which is entertaining nonetheless.

Maybe if you're talking about listening, but the Beatles were pop not Blues. The Stones were a visual band that sexualized rock more than anyone before or after Elvis. And just listen to Midnight Rambler; tell me a song that could sexualize the blues, like that by the Beatles, Zepplin or anybody else. You don't get away with being called the Greatest Rock n Roll Band in the World for 30 years, and get away with it. Just saying, nobody else tried calling themselves that. You can disagree, but history is history.

First thought, my vote goes to NickelBack.
They sound like they jumped into a recording booth after taking a cold shower, crying, with their dick in their hand.
I'd love to see them fed a bunch of LSD and locked in a closet with about 10 insanely pissed off cats.

It's funny because they have a song about domestic violence.
I'm having a hard time with somebody saying Aerosmith and the Monkees. Aerosmith put out below good music in the seventies, and the Monkees put out a very critical of the suburban middle class song called Pleasant Valley Sunday and it is one great song.

...who ever said the dead Kennedy's suck was way off, but then again you would have to understand what they were doing to appreciate their art, and as an artist jello biafra (singer) was on the same level as Hunter Thompson or abbie Hoffman. Jello even ran for mayor of San Francisco, completle y mocking the political standard...this was like "Hunter Thompson for sheriff" but on a MUCH bigger scale... www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4eLNz-UYVk
Plus for a punk band they actually incorporate a "surf rock" guitar playing style not seen in punk rock, as well as many other political, musical, and artistic feats that set these guys apart from the garbage that is most punk rock.

Yes he did. I don't see how you can read it any other way. Believe me when I tell you I went over it several times to make sure there was no other possible interpretation.

Yeah, I'm bound to make mistakes while discussing musicians I don't listen to, I get the members of the stones and the who mixed up quite a bit, I hate them as humans more than musicians, and after watching interviews and live recordings of these people I'm satisfied my judgements are not out of line , I really dislike all those terrible bands of that time that get such high recognition while not deserving any of it, and I have put very little effort into learning about them or their members... I hate Mick jagger, and Keith Richards as humans and musicians...I hate Pete Townsend and the who, I've always hated the stupid stage dances, the simple riffs, and his gimmick of smashing his guitar...(even when Hendrix smashed his guitar at Monterey music fest I didn't really dig it, though Hendrix was talented enough to pull off gimmicks like playing with his teeth, or playing behind the head, and smashing his guitar)...and if that's not bad enough he is an egotistical buffoon on top of all that
In general I see led zepplin, the who, and the rolling stones as living versions of spinal tap, which they are, it's that level that these people are on...

The doors and the grateful dead have to be my two favorite bands, but I also dig Jefferson airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Beatles...These guys were true musicians, real artists.
The who, the stones, led zeppelin, all garbage...

They did a couple good songs but they got played so much on the radio back in the day that I couldn't stand it any more. And don't even get me started on Springsteen.

Yes, I actually had the deluxe edition first, so when I dug the vinyl out of the stack a year or two later I was just a little disappointed it wasn't a double album....
As for the eagles, I can't think of one good song they did I hate them all. Concur with you on Springsteen.

Has anyone checked out the tracks Keith Richards is releasing. So tight! Please give it a listen if you haven't. There are some doubters in this thread, but Keith is... well, he's a special individual and one of the reasons that I am proud to be human. His life is art. Substantial Damage, baby...

I'll check it out, I'm willing to give the who a chance musically...
The stones I dislike mainly as humans, Keith Richards refused to help abbie Hoffman, and there was a stone's incident with the yippies...all he cared about was being that "spinal tap" style rock star...Plus even in their early days with the dancing and the make-up...really turned me off from those guys...
I'm not saying it's not ok for YOU to enjoy these guys, I just can't stand them, but that's me personally, not everybody is going to have the same taste.
I mean there was "the electric prunes", "ultimate spinach", "the doors", "the space cadets", "the grateful dead", "the Beatles" etc...there were some really good bands from that time, but I don't consider the stones, the who, or spelling to be all that great, or even all that good...

And aren't musicians (people) entitled to endorse whomever they identify with? Maybe Keith didn't dig Abbie's views. Plus he's made it clear that he was never one for politics anyway.

Here's a vid of the Woodstock/who incident...
Both the who and the stones wanted nothing to do with anti-war, youth culture or the 60s revolution, when abbie Hoffman asked Keith for support Keith basically told him to fuck off, and there was another incident between some yippies and the stones...
this is what I mean when I say they didn't care about anything relevant of the time, they just wanted to wear make-up, dance on stage and play their simple tunes, which some say "what's wrong with that?" And I guess nothing is, but it completely made me dislike these bands as humans and musicians..
...all the English rockers like the stones and the who looked like hip hang-loose radical types, but we're in reality a bunch of up-tight stuffy conservitive limeys, britts in hip rocker costumes, in my eyes one word can describe them, FAKE...well I can think of a few more, but I was already accused of trolling for posting my honest opinion, so out of better judgement I'm going to hold back and be as polite as possible.

...the Beatles being the exception to my statement about the limey bands of that era, I can really dig what the Beatles did with what that time offered them, brilliant musicians and artists, though I never liked them much until after they had been introduced to LSD and marijuana...
I love the dead because not only was their extended improvised jam style full of freedom and a unique sound, a bizzare blend of jug-band-psychedelic-jazz-jam-rock, but they had close ties to owsley "bear" Stanley, an infamous LSD chemist, he designed the "wall of sound" speaker system and cooked up a good deal of the LSD of the time, Stanley's brand of LSD was known as "white lightening", though Stanley also had close connections to Nick Sand and Tim scully, the LSD chemists responsible "Orange sunshine" brand LSD...not only that, but the dead had close ties to Ken kesey and the merry pranksters as well as Neal Cassady...this band was connected to some of the most inspired LSD chemists and freethinking icons of the time, they WERE the time they came from as humans, though their music was timeless to the point where it will be enjoyed well into the future...
The doors are my other ultimate favorite band of that time, mostly because of Jim Morrison, who I think was an amazing poet and intellectual who some what stumbled into rock music. When at UCLA film school he made one film, which I thought was great, but the class gave it a horrible review and the teacher gave him a D-, so he quit. Jim's art was REAL art,and often did not go over with the mainstream, his poetry books, which were amazing, got horrible reviews. Jim was a shamanicly influenced psychedelic poet, an intellectual and an artist. When the stones went on ed Sullivan they changed their song, the fact that Jim refused to do so gives me that much more respect for the integrity of his art..( I also think it was bizzare that Jim came from nowhere, had no musical education or prior experience, had a career from 1967-1971 then mysteriously died...he had connections to laurel canyon, which had a secret military film studio near it, he changed his appearance quickly and drastically, he had a high IQ, and a father who was high in the military (George Stephen Morrison (January 7, 1919 – November 17, 2008) was a United States Navy rear admiral (upper half) and naval aviator. Morrison was commander of the U.S. naval forces in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Gulf of Tonkin Incident of August 1964, which sparked an escalation of American involvement in the Vietnam War-Wikipedia), there are theories that Jim may have been an MKULTRA opperitive, which are not credible and murky at best, but I can say he fits the profile perfectly for what the CIA would have been looking for in an MKULTRA operative...Ok, aside from all that mess and back to the music, I think it was amazing, it has this gloomy, strange, bizzare and insane feel to it, unique from the other bands of the time, it was psychedelic music, but it incorporated sounds that reminded me of the trips where reality is being torn apart and there's nothing you can do to stop it, panic, instability, being insane and overwhelmed, I think the song "not to touch the earth" is the most obvious example of what I'm talking about...Plus Ray Manzarek was an amazing musician, trained in classical piano and jazz, brilliant musician, though I see Jim as the real artist...possesed by the souls of dead Indians since childhood, the metaphor of a "shamanic rocker" is Morrison...(most their pop songs were written by Robby, like "light my fire" and "touch me", "the soft parade" is in my opinion their worst album, it was written mostly by Robby and not Jim.
Can you see how musically and historically a person like myself would highly value the doors and the dead, but have pure disdain for bands like the who and the stones? (And I did not even get in to politics in this post, I mentioned abbie Hoffman and the incidents involving him with both bands, but that's just scratching the surface, I have many other political reasons to not like these guys:
Again musical taste is personal preference, and it's fine to not agree, but I honestly hate the rolling stones, the who, and to a lesser extant led zepplin, and all those other "spinal tap" resembling pseudo-hip mega pop-rock bands of that time...
Again, I know I should keep my mouth shut here as well, but I HATE David bowie as well...but I'll reserve my criticisms here in an effort to not have to defend my views against the backlash they will cause amoung angry bowie fans...

Jim Morrison, though a great singer, was one of the biggest assholes of his time and his lyrics were largely pompous crap. The rest of the band doesn't get the credit they deserve. The Stones, The Dead and The Who were essentially apolitical and didn't want to get dragged into that morass. Abbie Hoffman was a moron. John Lennon was a hypocritical jackass. Imagine no posessions? He was living in one of the most expensive buildings in Manhattan when he wrote that. I don't know which asshole in CSN wrote love the one your with but it is a song about being unfaithful on the road.

...if I hate a person as a human for their selfish and despicable choices, why would I like their music? Which in the case of the stones and the who was garbage regardless, 3 chord 3 minute tunes with out any lyrical significance to the world around them...
when I found the dead, it had more to do with their connections to Ken kesey, owsley Stanley, Nick Sand, Neal cassady, and so on, little to do with their politics, it's because they were REAL, they were not trying to conform to an image or set sound, they were actual artists...
I don't expect them to get involved in American politics, but It was not American politics, it was world politics, the student revolutions of the early 60s were global, Viet nam effected more than the U.S and asia, civil rights was global...and all the stones and the who cared about was cocaine, stuffing their crotches, wearing make-up and dancing about on stage...
The point was all these guys cared about was themselves, the did not care about anything relevant of the time in any way, and their music was garbage to begin with...it was pop rock, the Britney spears of that time...even if their music was any good because they are such dousche-bags I could not support it...if Keith Richards was a convicted child molester you probably wouldn't want to support them right? These people are scum just the same, so I don't support them...

I don't understand why people get personally offended when you say bands that they like suck, it was never an attack on them, it was my personal opinion about the band.
If you don't choose bands by their politics it means that if Keith Richards was a Nazi you would still dig them...
Music is the most exploited form of art, it's actually not even art any more, it's background for a cookie-cutter image, and people confuse their personal identity with the music they like, so when I say "the stones suck" you get upset because you think these bands create an image of who you as a person are, so when people say "the stones suck" you hear "you suck"
A true individual doesn't think that the art of others somehow creates an image of themselves...
I don't give a fuck about a 60s radical image as you claim, I do however appreciate the art of those who were able to look at the world, interpret it for themselves, and act based on their personal interpretations, and not based on the expectations of the culture that surrounds them, I appreciate the work of true individuals, freethinkers, and freaks ...I think the fact that I like music from that era but can still go against what the majority of people think about the music from that times proves that rather than conform to a set of standards or a set image, I was able to sit down, listen to these bands, and decide on my own what I think about them, regardless of what anybody says ...and when I see artists who are true individuals, real freaks, I can often dig what they are doing...When I see selfish, greedy , FAKE, excuses for some form of rebellion I can call them like I see them, a bunch of up-tight stuffy conservatives in costumes, selling an image to anyone who will buy it, pseudo-rebellious pseudo-art preformed by conservative dousche-bags in costumes...
There's no way you can change a person's personal preference, so in the mean, try to take it easy when others don't agree with you, it's not an attack on you in any way.

I have no interest in changing your opinion nor am offended by it. I just think your reasoning is stupid.

What a bunch of bullshit. Almost every single musician is a politically ignorant, uninformed jerkoff pandering to their audience for money. Like Jon Stewart. Shut up and sing. The Stones and the Who wisely eschewed much political expression because it would effect their bottom line. Remember what happened with the Dixie Chicks? And Abbie Hoffman was a moron who had no business being on the stage. Aside from that I suspect your political views are incredibly vapid. If you aren't a conservative yoyu are uptight? Fuck off with your bigotry.

I liked them best when they were pretending to be a country band. Merle Haggard and Marty Robbins covers. Fuck yeah. The Eep Hour stuff not so much

Agreed
The stuff they're playing in Festival Express is actually really good
As a blues/country band they were great.
Friend of the Devil is still one of my favorite songs

They kicked the door in for the Grunge Era, which was the last time any decent music was made. Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots...the Seattle sound. That was in the 1990s & there hasn't been anything worthwhile since. What has happened to the guitar gods? The garage rock? Nowadays, all I ever hear about is Bieber & Miley. What a joke.

Plenty of decent music is still being made. You have to dig a bit deeper than the radio these days is all.
