Yes it can but it's... not quite as clean, and I feel sketchy about it. I've done it successfully though.

I bought some sheets of polyfil felt at Michaels, three for less than a buck, and three will make more filters than I'd need in a year. Tape sucks, I have to admit. It gets gummy.

So how come micropore tape works with pasty plates and not in grain jar lids?
Or tape would work with lids well?

Damn I will have to find my micropore tape somewhere.
A regular sized roll in here costs like 3 USD

yeah mine was around that price, like 4.50 canadian. it worked for me, but maybe there's reasons that experience would say to avoid using them, but logically it should work the same way. Gotta put the paper towel down still and everything else. my half pints fit into a sandwich bag so I usually wrap syran wrap around it then put it in the ziplock sandwich bag.

The micropore tape is not the best filter for GE. It's just to cover that hole.
The hole is to prevent a negative pressure vacuum from forming inside the agar plates, one that would suck in contams upon opening. I'm sure you can get away with micropore tape for your grain jars but honestly at that point I'd either just buy a tyvek suit from Home Depot for like 10 bucks or get some SFDs.
Pasty will correct me if I'm wrong

sorry , I miss read pablo's question. It can be used on jar lids, but I wouldnt use it for grain jars, but if you wanted to do agar in a half pint you can use it for those lids.

The only grain jars that I've ever used micropore tape on have gotten bacteria. They may be fine if you don't shake them but I think since the tape is so thin, when grains touch the tape when shaking is where things go wrong

I have had small screwtop pp plates before, For GE and negative pressure... you just unscrew a very little bit of the lid, maybe 1/16 of a full turn and no attachments at the top, no nothing...
Makes me wonder... screw tops might be more efficient than snap PP's?

90 min probably won't hurt the containers but it will caramelize the sugars. Better to not do that.

Make sure they're PP5s and you're good.
I don't cook my PP5s with my grain though. In theory they shouldn't melt.

Certainly the containers will be okay. But the media will be ruined unless its grain water agar or has no simple sugars. Malt, honey, Karo or dextrose in the media will be caramelized. That makes it harder for the myc to colonize and easier for bacteria to eat. Don't go 90 min for agar.
