Anyone ever had USPS tracked packages bounce across the country?

I'm up in northeast us and this package just went from a few hundred miles away to the southeast, a couple thousand miles away.
Is there any hope of this shit returning? Does USPS sometimes just fuck up that bad?

It does happen rarely. Call them but be prepared for them to not really give you any answers.

I've had two packages en route this week, both had screwy tracking info. Nothing that odd, but abnormal nonetheless. One still isn't here, but it should've been & when I check up on it, it's weird.

Sometimes things get routed in totally inefficient ways (or in my experience, even usually do). Or what would seem inefficient anyways. Every package isn't sent in the straightest line possible, groups of packages are sent to different hubs/sorting centers or whatever they're called and split up and recombined with others and sent to the next one from there.
I've had packages that originated in Texas (my state) move towards my city, then abruptly change course and head entire states away, and then back again. They have a system that works more or less. I've never had a lost package and my shit is almost always early.

I had a package that was out for delivery, but the delivery was never attempted, and then it went hundreds of miles away and never came back.

If they ended up in Puerto Rico from Rhode Island, I wonder if it had something to do with a zero at the beginning of the zip code. Excel sucks at remembering you put a zero in front of a string of numbers on purpose, but you can fix around it. CSV files never remember that fucking zero.
