Actually I'm just posting this because I like what he said, not really to get anyone's approval about whether they like him or not. No, I did not just learn about him but even if I did I fail to see your point..
I don't think he thinks he was perfect either. I'll try not to take machine elves seriously  thanks for the advice.

I love listening to Terence Mckenna. He was endlessly entertaining and he had a whack-load of funny ideas, some of which may have even landed somewhere near the general ballpark of truth, but a lot of what he said was pretty ridiculous. I admire him for saying it and saying it so well, but I can't help but wince at his frequent, rather lazy and unfair attacks against 'science' and logic in general.

People who do not like McKenna are either jealous, ignorant, or jealous and ignorant.

The same could be said about Bill Nye :whatyougonnado:

No...because McKenna isn't a fucking prick like Nye. Nye is just a shitty human being, regardless of his intelligence.

Even if McKenna is a whack job, he was still a good human being for the most part.

I agree that McKenna was a very wise and insightful man whose message is as valuable today as it could have been if he preached during the 60s instead of the 90s and early 2000s. He indeed was an amazing man and I find his wisdom to be one of the most valuable things humanity needs right now.

However he wasn't Jesus (not saying Jesus is real but I'm saying that people shouldn't view mckenna the same way Christians view Jesus as this perfect being) he was just a man who was open minded enough and egoless enough to understand, harness, and apply these concepts and ideas that psychedelics bring up much better then the average tripper making him obtain a wiser and more psychedelic view of the world that many of us deny or reject.

Not everyone who takes psychedelics is like McKenna or like us who believe that psychedelics have something spiritual to them. There are plenty of trippers who disregard it all and just say "it's just a drug and all this spirituality/shamanic shit is all hippie garbage".

How can you say McKenna's hate for science is lazy when we have people like Bill Nye proving McKenna right?

the sad fact is, if you dedicate your life to science, you turn into an egotistical prick. (see bill nye and dawkins)

Dawkins and Bill Nye are dicks, I don't see how that discredits all of science. I think Terence was an exceptionally smart and well read guy, who was right on the money about a few things. His criticism of science though is at times too broad and too general. I agree with some of the points he makes, about problems with modern ideologies and the arrogance of rationalists, but all of his most unusual and outlandish claims have either A. failed to hold true B. were impossible to verify or disprove. I think that the proper approach to science is not an arrogant one, its simply a matter of trusting to reason rather than emotion and belief, at the best of times anyway.
I'd actually argue that the problem with people like Nye and Dawkins isn't their scientific upbringing, but in their emotional attachment to their personal vision of how the world works, and their own egos.

Really though my problems with Mckenna are mostly to do with Novelty theory and his too-firm faith in psychedelics. I think his overall message was inspired and valuable, though, if you consider those caveats first.

I agree about the novelty theory being something that discredits McKenna..but his obsession and pedestal he puts psychedelics on, I am totally in agreement with. That's actually the MAIN reason why I love McKenna so much, because he is about the only person I have come across that I KNOW loves psychedelics as much as myself. That's what keeps me listening to him.

People here eat up everything TM says hook line and fucking sinker.

The dude should have run his own cult, his beliefs and teachings were so retarded and his minions believed all of it and took it as the truth. He glorified psychedelic use in the way a heroin addict glorifies shooting a bag of dope.

His schizophrenic rambles, his stoned ape theory , basically everything he said was completely unfounded. He really should have started his own religion and made his own scriptures and started an official cult. He is so off base with everything he says and I call bullshit to everything he says.

Terrence Mckenna is a quack piece of shit and is giving people the wrong idea about psychedelics. Psychedelics are a drug and give you interesting thoughts and you perceive cool things but to take them that seriously and think everything you are perceiving is real is such a crock of shit way to go about things.

I call other cultures out that take psychedelics too seriously as well. Everything the shamans believe about psychedelics is a complete bullshit too. When you start making tripping a religion it isn't even fun anymore and you are taking it way too seriously.

People like him put psychedelics on this pedestal and it is completely unnecessary. There are plenty of other drugs that give you cool experiences too, just stop putting psychedelics on this pedestal. They are drugs people, using drugs too much is inherently bad I don't care if you feel you are benefiting from them but seriously you can become more enlightened by falling in love and having kids and travelling. Psychedelics are cool but seriously stop getting so obsessed with them and take them for what they are, just another drug experience that give you a different perspective. I can get a different perspective on life by taking a biology class. Big fucking whoop.

The ideas you hear from people tripping, when they are articulated in writing are about as accurate as the ramblings as a psychotic schizophrenic hobo you hear rambling on the street.

I take these ideas for what they are, they are usually delusional thoughts that seem real and significant in the midst of a psychedelic experience.

I agree with most of what you said, except for the end. He wasn't attacking science, he was voicing his opinion that science in general is focusing on the wrong things. I honestly believe his opinion would be vastly different now. Though not completely unskeptical, and it was his skepticism of reality that made him so wildly entertaining.
