My Cult Life Hacks:
Realize that drywall contains antifungals and is a poor source of gypsum.
Drink your coffee, and quit putting it in coir mixtures where it does more harm than good.
L2LC. There's still nothing that can beat a clean LC for speed and ease.
L2LI - because LI is damn close to LC for speed, and you can make one from a plate and use it that day.

What he said. Do the teks exactly. Learn from those who came before, then mess around with it. You gotta learn the rules before you break them.
Patience. Patience, and more patience.

i've had great success using drywall as a substitute for gypsum as long as its the plain white faced drywall the green stuff is made for bathrooms/damp places and does contain antifungals (at least from what I hear never used it) but IME drywall works great but is a pain to prep

I can't say I have any regrets or wasted any money. I lurked and took notes on Shroomery forever and have had minimal failures since day 1 because of it. The resources and members here are priceless.
The things I can recommend are:
- Take notes and make a plan.
- Learn the search function well.
- Ask questions if you're stuck.
- Always move forward. Mistakes are there to learn from.
- Start grains as soon as possible. PF tek is nice introduction of course. I started with both which put a lot in perspective.

Ahh you got me. My one regret is that I didn't start working with agar immediately as well.

i'v been out of the game for a long while. gonna start again soon. i am by no means an expert, however in my experience:
patience is #1!!! its very tempting to check your jars and tubs or just say "well its close enough.." but lots of mistakes are made this way. even if you dont get contam, early pins, or fully stall it, u could spoil the aggressive fruiting u could achieve.
#2 keep it simple.
#3 take your time when preparing to ensure you have everything, and plan ahead for using your sterile area to ensure speed and efficiency without fumbles.
#4 corn. corn corn corn. wbs is such a bitch. corn is so easy to simmer/boil hydrate (you can pc to hyd. but no more than 5psi or lots of starch gooo) and sterilize. just pc at 10psi for an hr an half.
#5 rtv silicone fron the automotive store/section is your best friend. makes the best injection ports and even sticks to the top of tyvek if your work it around to really get it in the grooves. all my grain jars have re-useable injection port lids. (its also fantastic for fixing your glass pipes and bongs. :P)
#6 a good glove box is not that expensive or hard to make and is deffinetly worth putting the effort into. ziplock brand has a weather proof seal on the tub. just 2 pvc toilet mounts, a large pair of dish gloves, zip ties and a lil glue away and voila. ur most valuable tool. besidess the pc of course.

I use clear 10.1 ounce tubes of GE brand silicone II for this from the hardware store because it's much cheaper than the automotive rtv. I used to use the red high-temp rtv though, when it cures it's harder and I theorize that makes it more brittle and susceptible to tearing when the needle penetrates.

Patience is key. Agar will be the best tool you have, and is kinda fun to watch.
There's a natural aesthetic beauty to mycelium colonizing.
When doing SAB work. Set everything out in order of what your going to work with. Work at a slow and steady pace. Be deliberate with your actions. Even do a mock run before starting to get a feel for the work your about to do.
Oats are cheap and easy to prep.
If your going to change a variable in a process. (Dialing in mono tub, tuning agar recipe, bulk ingredients, etc.) Only change one variable at a time so you know what cause the change in results.
Buy a notebook and keep notes of everything for each grow.

AMU Q&A If you don't have a plan of your own, you'll become a part of somebody else's.

i use the clear. its got the consistancy close to a bouncy ball after drying. a lil softer. u can even pc the silicone while its still freshly wet and itll speed dry that way. its just always been a favorite cuz i could re-use it so much. and i never found any other silicone that dried with the same resiliance. maybe i just never got the right one...

I have all of my stuff to be done on the left side of my SAB, and all of the stuff to contribute on the right. Everything clean comes from the left, and all of the "dirty" stuff on the right. Work is done in the middle, with lids going to the reverse. This makes it a lot easier to keep my hands from crossing over the open plates, jars, etc which are being done. This goes back to my USAF days working in the Epidemiology lab training. It isn't foolproof. I'm too big a fool, but it works.

Build a hood, build a hood, build a hood, then build a hood.
Do agar, switch to bags, attention to detail

I like bags because they are disposable. If one contams, it gets tossed in the trash. No having to deal with a jar full of bad mold spores. I hated washing those things out.

I consider contam jars disposable. I never bother PCing them and saving them. They go right in the trash.
Really, when it comes down to it they're about a buck each. If you're that concerned, panhandling $10-20 in a day isn't really hard.

Skip the PF-tek. Download the RR videos. Always start with agar. Post a pic get to an answer. Bucket tek is real magic. Spawn bags make more. Incubation is a lie. Propane burners save time. Flowhoods are worth it. Don't cut your filter discs. Plastic lids suck. Grow more & post less. Buy Stamets books. Make friends with burners. Build your own strainer. Use a fan to dry your grain. Black 5mil plastic rocks for liners. Clones work great. Don't waste your time in the journals. You can quit your day job. Marthas are toys. Tubs really are set & forget. Forstner bits make perfect lids. Extra fruit can chill in the fridge. Dose heavy & by yourself. Buy a nice scalpel. Electric sterilizers are mo betta. You can preseal .5 micron bags. Patience always pays. Blindingleaf knows more. Any liquid inoculation is always riskier. Don't dunk a bulk sub. Light isn't that big of a deal. Fine verm is preferable. Don't fuck with the coffee. Chocolates make great gifts. Bulk organic rye is at whole foods. Compost your subs if you can.
Be humble.. They're just cubes.

Buy a few syringes
Don't be cheap
Follow ONE tek
Instead of one mega grow try several over weeks. That quickly gives you experience in all the different essential steps involved in mycology
Don't be stubborn
Don't give up
Keep the faith
