You lazy fuck.
Except he did not ask what a casing layer was, he asked what a casing was....lol.
If he just searched for casing, he would still be confused.
I figure that posting here just contributes more knowledge to the website so that when people Google what I asked this post may possibly help. Yes I would still be confused. I like to hear it in multiple different ways.

u don't want ur bulk substrate to be laying on top of and touching perlite. it can be in a tray thats sitting on top of a layer of perlite, like an SGFC, but they won't be directly touching.
for a monotub, perlite is not gonna do much of anything almost anywhere u put it.
I am so glad you told me this.

I hope this is TRULY RELEVANT... i read a lot of info on this site over months. i learned its a nice place to get told off for asking questions.
But, if i go on this site. and i search for "what exactly is casing" and i get to this place as i just have. and i read what everyone wrote...
i feel i read about exactly what casing is NOT. and, vaguely, sort of what casing is. basically. in a nutshell go to store ask for this... toss it on and dont ask questions. yet, we tell ones off and preach they need to learn more deeper info... but no one knows exactly what is a casing?
i am still curious about what exactly is casing? more specifically, does it change the mycelium? like scientifically, is the mycelium that grows thru the casing layer different than the mycelium in the substrate? will pins forming below the casing and pushing through? or do pins only form at surface on the mycelium that grows through the casing layer? does having a casing layer make harvesting to be easier? like the fruits will break off easier with a casing? does a casing help to protect the mycelium as a whole? through an event like harvesting... or maybe having a casing causes more damage or stress to the life form? maybe disrupting its network since the casing can be disturbed more easily?
info like this would help me decide about using a casing or not, on types that can thrive with or without a casing. even if it doesn't mater and i am wanting to over think it.
since the mycelium is consuming the substrate, it could be different and perhaps more bonded to the substrate. While the casing is empty of nutrition, the mycelium is then not consuming the casing, so maybe is just pushing past it, and not biting in to it? so the fruits will "let go" easier when harvesting?
i felt like if questions like this were answered, or even speculated by the very experienced people on here, then someone like me who googles to learn what exactly is casing, and ends up on here... could then have a deeper understanding of what exactly is casing.. what effects does it have... tho im sure if i google it enough more times and get a different info each time, then soon the internet will tell me whatever i want to believe? so then what is the point of any of this? why not just buy a book? but i search the book and posts more recently say some info in the book is outdated or obsolete. so arent we all still learning? or we fussing? fussing about what exactly is casing... for the noobs... the curious noobs who need to be spoon fed?
or if this guy found out what he needed to know, why not delete this so no one like me ends up here and still doesnt understand what exactly is casing and what exactly is it doing to the life form... however if i can go google what exactly is a casing layer and what exactly is it doing. then i will just be getting even stupider than i already am... maybe stupider enough that i would google it and end up right back here and read it all over again
i have a memory of reading about what exactly a casing is, that may have answered these curiosities of mine. but, those responses were in a different thread, with a different subject and topic that posters got off of topic, but that info should have been here, so when i search for this then i see that info... because i wasnt ready to learn it at the time i randomly stumbled over that info in the past...

i am still curious about what exactly is casing?
A casing is an old school term that people used to used to call bulk substrates.
People often confuse this with "a casing layer"
A casing layer is only one layer of non nutritius material that is usually applied to a fully colonized bulk substrate to help aid in moisture retention and pinning.
Nobody refers to bulk substrates as casings anymore because of this confusion.
If a noob(or old schooler) logs on and calls something a casing, it is confusing until that person specifies what exactly was meant by the term.

PF answered that question pretty well.
Quote:
more specifically, does it change the mycelium? like scientifically, is the mycelium that grows thru the casing layer different than the mycelium in the substrate?
Nope. If you do MS, the genetics that make it through the casing may be different than exactly what's underneath, but you have such a giant mix of genetics in the whole sub that it's a moot point. With an isolate it's exactly the same through the entire thing.
Quote:
Will pins forming below the casing and pushing through? or do pins only form at surface on the mycelium that grows through the casing layer?
Depends on the species/strain. IME it's usually under the casing layer.
Quote:
does having a casing layer make harvesting to be easier? like the fruits will break off easier with a casing?
No, but it's a moot point because you should be cutting them off anyway.
Quote:
does a casing help to protect the mycelium as a whole? through an event like harvesting... or maybe having a casing causes more damage or stress to the life form? maybe disrupting its network since the casing can be disturbed more easily?
IME it tends to just hide contams if they happen. It can also be another vector for contams itself if you don't pasteurize it properly. But it doesn't particularly help or hurt the mycelial network under it, it just provides a little micro-climate for fruiting.

It's because noobs never ask good questions. You did, so I'm giving you the best answers I can. People with knowledge tend to think of it as a whole, while people who are still learning need it broken down.

We're all still learning. But spoon-feeding isn't what we do here. It's 2016, we all have access to the internet. You can learn whatever you want by yourself.

Deleting all the bad info is a much harder task than you think. I've been a mod on other forums, and just keeping up with spam is ridiculous. Be glad the moderators have enough time to do what they do.

That's kinda how it goes, man. Someone asks a basic question, someone answers it then we go off on other tangents. It's how you get the best info though. You get answers to questions you never would have thought to ask.
If you just want mushrooms, follow what Frank Horrigan does to a T. If you want to learn to really grow mushrooms, you'll have to read a lot.
