perlite with casings
    #2211421 - 12/31/03 10:46 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

My friend always puts verm underneath his casing substrate to keep moister and to collect mycilium piss. Now my question is can he use perlite instead of the verm. Would this cause a problem with contams and such even if it was steralized or any other type of problems. If anyone knows please inform me.

I don't see why it would be a problem if it's just on the bottom.... The bottom layer isn't even nessecary but I like to use one.

That would probably help to collect loose water, though....

Theres no reason you couldnt use perlite in your casing as far as I can see. My freinds used perlite+brf cakes before because he didnt have any verm and got sick of waiting for ups.

You don't want to use it for the top of the casing, though, because it evaporates the water a lot more than verm.
