A game that improves your memory, intelligence and increases your IQ?
    #22113212 - 08/19/15 05:37 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I just learned about this game, it's called Dual N-Back.Gwern has done a mildly obsessive-compulsive review on the benefits of playing it.

Apparently this game has been shown scientifically to increase working memory.
Most research says that an average person can hold 4-7 individual pieces of data in their working memory, ready for recall and use (such as in calculations or mundane tasks).
The crazy revelation is how much working memory influences IQ, which makes sense. Imagine you have a computer with the latest and greatest processor, a brand new intel i7 but only 512mb of RAM memory, how sluggish will that machine feel? Working Memory is RAM for humans! Now imagine you could double the RAM memory inside your mind, how powerful is that?

I use a free android version of Dual N-Back (you can get it here). Have been training daily, at least 24 minutes a day (why? I believe 24 minutes are a interdian timelapse of import to humans, as can be seen by the 24min naps of polyphasic sleep, or by 24 minutes being the unit of time for meditation in the Tibetan buddhist traditions.) and I am getting wonderful results!
For those into meditation, it feels like shamatha!

What about good old fashioned chess?

Tons of studies showing that chess can help memory and spacial recognition

I would argue that playing chess requires one to use their working memory, what the dual n-back game trains.

Especially if one learns to play chess in the blind by ear. That is some of the most intense mental exercise ever.

I agree Chess is a powerful tool.
I learned to play it blindly and it was mind-enhancing as fuck.

N-Back is a slightly different beast though. While Chess teaches you to look into the future, N-Back teaches you continuity of attention.
It is more targeted, more of a deliberate practice for some very specific aspects of consciousness. I love both!
