Alternative to colanders/strainers: Metal mesh garbage cans
    #22112038 - 08/19/15 01:46 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I've been dissatisfied with the size of typical colanders from day one of this hobby. Even amazon doesn't seem to have a strainer big enough. Then I see one of those little wastebaskets made of metal mesh on TV and it seems my prayers have been answered.

Haven't had the chance to go to a store to verify if the mesh is small enough to strain WBS so I thought I'd ask if anybody else had tried it. Or maybe you have other alternatives to typical colanders?

Hopefully others will benefit from this. Sure would be cheaper than buying a strainer.

Apologies for bumping an old thread - but have others successfully strained smaller grains like finch seed with a mesh trash bin?

No sweat.

I don't think you could use such a thing for grass seed or smaller grains, not the models I've seen anyway. But window screen is cheap, especially at secondhand stores.

Window screens seem the best/only route for bulk strainers to me.

I've been using a window screen for years. only way to strain 10 gallons of spawn at once but also works better then a colander in my opinion

Makes you wonder what the fuck is wrong with colander manufacturers. You can't find a good retail strainer to save your life.
