I've never encrypted my internet use before: How difficult is it/what does it entail?

Sure I could easily google this but I figure someone here could give better advice and maybe recommend specific tools. I'm somewhat tech savvy.
I'm not looking for hardcore security, I was wanting something basic

What are you wanting to encrypt? Who you want privacy from will determine what you need.

It depends on what you want to do. Are you trying to keep le from knowing the sites you visit and what you say? Or do you have sensitive documents you want to encrypt? For the latter I recommend pgp. There is a download of an easy to use software at gpg4win.com
If you want to conceal your web browsing, get a proxy, preferably a vpn. It will encrypt your browsing so that not even your isp can see what you are doing.

Also, be aware that many VPN service providers will keep a log of your internet traffic for a period of time. And they will not put up a fight if law enforcement were to request access to those logs. Do some research and find a VPN provider that does not keep logs.
You could also try the TOR browser. It bounces you through the TOR network and keeps your traffic hidden from your ISP and even from the NSA (for now). I find that I cannot log into the Shroomery with it though.

An old and used computer (by someone else, not you of course), all data deleted. Then install everything from scratch and get an anonymous mobile internet card together with an appropriate modem. Don't login to any of your regular accounts, make new profiles on all services with a made up new identity. Don't share any data with your regular computer.
Depending on the country you live in, this can be done fast and cheap and I believe it offers good security, especially if you live in a densely populated area, where it may be difficult to locate you by other means, such as triangulation and similar. You can still use VPNs to even further increase security.

And use a router with a firewall and encryption and delete all files at the end of your browser session and pay off the local politicians for extra protection.
