How do i Find my "Soul"
    #2211117 - 12/31/03 02:14 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

ever since i've taken philosophy, i've completely forgot what my soul is. When i accepted the philosophy that the soul is just a perception. The soul really cannot be a perception, so i find it useless.

The easiest way to find one's soul, in my opinion, is to not look for anything at all for a while

--------------------
Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

Alexander Pope. 1688?1744

442. The Dying Christian to his Soul

VITAL spark of heav'nly flame!
Quit, O quit this mortal frame:
Trembling, hoping, ling'ring, flying,
O the pain, the bliss of dying!
Cease, fond Nature, cease thy strife, 5
And let me languish into life.

Hark! they whisper; angels say,
Sister Spirit, come away!
What is this absorbs me quite?
Steals my senses, shuts my sight, 10
Drowns my spirits, draws my breath?
Tell me, my soul, can this be death?

The world recedes; it disappears!
Heav'n opens on my eyes! my ears
With sounds seraphic ring! 15
Lend, lend your wings! I mount! I fly!
O Grave! where is thy victory?
O Death! where is thy sting?

What this person says:

Even if there is no reason to believe in a supernatural soul, the idea of a soul will persist. It is a useful way to identify that part of a person that thinks and has feelings. We need a term to refer to those real, higher capacities of humans that are traditionally included within the supernatural soul.

I propose we call this bundle of higher capabilities the natural soul. It can not be separated from the body. It depends upon the functioning of one's brain, nervous system, and body. It includes the mind, will, and conscience. Besides including one's abilities to think and make moral decisions, it includes our feelings and emotions. Natural souls are not immortal, since that would be contrary to the idea that the natural soul results from the normal functioning of one's nervous system and body. The natural soul refers to all human psychological processes, which are regarded as both real and entirely natural.

And this was interesting:

Quote:

Each man and woman born into this world is a being made of three (3) distinct components:

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God]
your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto
the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(1 Thessalonians 5:23 KJV)

1: The BODY. This is your PHYSICAL component of being. It is flesh made from a collection of unremarkable mineral elements (but is mostly water) and is in harmony with the nature and spirit of this world. It grows, matures, begins to deteriorate, eventually dies, and then decomposes back into its constituent elements and remains a part of the dust of the world. The body is a part of you but is NOT ALL of what defines who YOU are.

"And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are
consumed,"
(Proverbs 5:11 KJV)

2: The SOUL. This is who YOU are; it is a part of your SPIRITUAL component. This is your individuality, your "I AM" so to speak, your "heart." Although your individual soul did not exist before your mother and father procreated you, it will exist forever. It cannot be killed by man:

"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill
the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul
and body in hell."
(Matt. 10:28 KJV)

When your body dies your soul (YOU) will leave the body of flesh:

"And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she
died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him
Benjamin."
(Genesis 35:18 KJV)

3: The SPIRIT. This is the source of power and control for both your body and soul; it is either evil or good, darkness or light, unholy or Holy, unclean or clean, of Satan or of God:

"But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what
manner of spirit ye are of."
(Luke 9:55 KJV)

Crikey, you read Pope?

Markos the Gnostic and I discussed this ages ago.  I think he agrees with the KJV interpretation.  I draw a line of distinction between the soul and the spirit in a different place.  I liken the soul to the "breath" as in the Greek 'pnein' which means 'to breathe'.  I understand the spirit to be the immaterial part.

So I guess your saying that the souls is us the ego the physical being the one that walks the earth and the spirit is what remains after our ego/physical body dies.

But in the christian sense i don beleive in the soul only the mind.

If the 'soul' is breath there isn't anything spectacular about having one. There is evidence that there is an immaterial component to humans. It is this component that supposedly is the cause of our ability to use conceptual abstraction.

Before I went and found the stuff I quoted from different websites, I was thinking that the soul is the essence of who we are. And I would have thought the spirit and soul were the same.

So, then, the spirit would be the material part of our non-physical bodies? And the soul would be a non-material component of the spirit and physical body?

I would say that is a possibility, yes.

Unfortunately I don't offer many references to some of the pearls I have discovered over the last 30 years of studying philosophy. I have shared quite a few links at the top of this forum though. The information can be found in them with a little bit of searching. It also might be fruitful to use Google and type in words like 'immaterial' and 'soul'.

I only searched on MSN, and of course didn't find a lot. Spent about an hour or so, also. I will probably do a deeper search, but I'll start with your philosophy links. I may wait until the weekend, however.

But the question remains:

Quote:

centrum: ever since i've taken philosophy, i've completely forgot what my soul is. When i accepted the philosophy that the soul is just a perception. The soul really cannot be a perception, so i find it useless.

Centrum, are you saying that philosophy taught you that the soul is a perception, so you don't need the soul? Or are you saying that you can't buy the fact that your soul is a perception, so you disregard what philosophy teaches about it?

I don't know if a soul is useless or useful. I think it is something that just is, isn't it?

I am of the belief that we don't really have individual souls, but instead we all have the same soul, unifying us. The Transcendentalists called this the oversoul. It is an ultimate reality, an indefinable spiritual essence.

I think that we are all made of the same thing God is made of, which I think would be our spirits. Even though we are all individuals, we are all the same, from the same source, and connected to each other.

I was also disillusioned... I thought this was about finding one's Soul Seek connection, as it tends to disappear for days... actually, it has been pretty stable for the past month.

I really don't believe anything on this. I mean, I see it as possible that there is a little point of energy that keeps us powered up and aware, alive, and that this is the gift of life that makes this all possible, and that all of these points are of course from the same... but I also see it as possible that our consciousness is the result of the connections within us.

EIther way, that consciousness is still connected to everything else in existance on basically infinite levels.... energy is quite the thing.
Peace.

Spirit is the unseen essence of all that is. Your Spirit is of such magnificence and power the whole of it could never be contained in the physical dimensions of your body. That is why only a part of your spirit is physically embodied. This embodied spirit is your soul. Your soul and your Higher Self are both spirit - they are simply different aspects of the same Spirit.

I agree. Have you or anybody else ever seen that movie "Deep Sea Rising"? It's a pretty bad-ass Sea-monster movie. The sea creature in this movie is one huge giant creature that is like a mutant-gargantuan-alien-octopus-like thing with a vast number of HUGE tentacles. However, each and every single tentacle that is attached to this beast is actually independent, and with it's own teeth and brain and so on, BUT ultimately it's still a part of the Beast it's attached to.

Thats how I view us in our spiritual form...essentially. We are all independent, yet, all part of God, and the Universe.

yeah, i interpreted it that way. It was said that the soul does not really exist. For a soul is beyond any perception (what we can feel). so we will never truely know.

I know but I was wondering if you could consider one of its qualities to be "instructing" DNA?

I suppose it's possible.

Heres some Plato, with a lil Drubu thrown in the mix:

Everything that exists and can be interpreted with the basic senses are merely imperfect images of perfect forms. The bed you sleep on is a finite object, which will eventually degrade over time. However, the idea of a bed (known as the beds FORM) is an infinite conception which is perfect and unending. The computer you are using is an imperfect form of a perfect concept.

We know that the imperfect images exist because we can sleep in our bed or type on our computer. We will say they exist in the Perceptual Realm. Where then do the forms exist? Since the perceptual realm is finite, there must exist an aesthetic realm in which all form exist infintely.(Dualistic Universe).

Since we are reflections of a form(God, Allah, Christ, The Perfect Human), we can connect to all the infinite forms in the aesthetic realm. This is where thought exists, as thought cannot be observed through sensual perception. This also leads to the idea that all knowledge that has ever been and ever will be exists currently - what is thought of as something new is simply a realization of its form.

The individual inside you is simply a finite reflection of a perfect being. This is your soul, YOU are your soul. But, you must also realize that EVERYTHING around you is also your soul. Everything that is life is imperfect reflections of perfect forms, all which exist TOGETHER.

Needless to say, just BE who you want to be, and that is what your soul is.

Using the bed and computer is a good analogy in showing how we are imperfect images of God, but the analogy presumes that there is a God.

how we are imperfect images of God, but the analogy presumes that there is[/is] a God.

I used God/Allah/Christ as an example to appeal towards those with religious backgrounds. To someone who is spiritual while not religious we are imperfect images of a perfect being. This perfect beng doesn't have to be the creator of the universe, but this is what is often implied with religion. Remember: By perfect I mean infinite and unending (which physically we are not), such that we are images of our souls. We are our souls, and yet we are everything that we can concieve.

Good evening, Mr. Mushrooms!  Glad you joined us!  I will be going to bed soon, as I have a long drive tomorrow, but I will be following falcon around for a little while, I guess.  He's my entertainment tonight, it appears.

Thank you, MM. And thank you for recommending Falcon. Hey, at least we're talking about philosophy!
