Meditating outdoors

I love meditation and I want to do it outdoors so bad but how does everyone do it? If I am outside and stationary for more than a couple minutes I get completely lit up by mosquitos and horseflies. Even with bug spray they still get me. How did the buddha manage this? I don't see how anyone can meditate outside in temperate to tropical climates because of this. Kinda hard for me to get in the zone when I am gettibg eaten alive also while putting my health at risk.

So you want to practice equanimity but you don't want mosquitos to bite you. When Gautama sat under that tree he sat with strong Adhitthana. "I'm not going to get up. I'm going to meditate until my bones are scattered under this tree." It was something like a 12 hour sit. Remember, he was 35 and had dabbled in meditation since age 6. If you can't handle the bugs, stay inside. Wanting to mediate outside because the Buddha did is just ego. It's your practice.

Yeah, I have tried meditating out doors but it's far too distracting when the mosquitoes & horseflies are eating you alive.

This.
It takes a very advanced level of meditation to maintain a calm and even mind outdoors. The constant flux of all things is even more apparent when in the elements, and is a distraction to our monkey minds.

Well I never said I wanted to do it because the Buddha did I was making an example so don't make that claim. I understand a certain calmness is to be maintained. This is not me saying "gee its too hot outside to meditate" or "eh its too windy!" No I am talking about parasites that directly seek you out because that is their nature. Sorry but I find it unlikely they are going to simply disappear because you are just so zen. It is kind of like trying to meditate when someone is standing beside you kicking you the whole time. It is not going to go well when something is attacking you. Now the mudding up idea is good. That would work quite well I'd imagine.

I can understand. Maybe open your eyes and breath and enjoy your surroundings. I can be much more still when floating in water or sitting in water is a great way also in a lake or river.

If mosquitoes are distracting to you then you're not ready to meditate outside. Is that simple enough for you?

Exactly.
You are not going to get rid of them. Make peace with their presence.

Describe temperate climate, would that include a winter season? Try a freezing meditation it has always helped work on not being bothered by my surroundings. I love to meditate outside after a fresh snow, or like to wait for an strong overnight snow snow storm.(try this if your into meditating on psychedelics) Ya would ditch the bug spray there are no mosquitoes in the winter
I recently assemble a shed with my roommate in our back yard.. next to a big ditch, in the black swamp area of the US. We found the burning 3 or 5 or 7 incense KEpt the mosquitoes at bay for a good amount of time if thats an option,, Idk in the other 3 seasons im running an d thats where I do my outdoor meditation (which is also a great thing to try on low dose psychedelics)

Yes. Meditation in different settings (locations, time of day/month/year, moods, states of consciousness, temperatures) has coupled my meditations, though I try to be bias to no one in particular.

It is good to try to have a consistent environment where you hold your daily practice. But a lack of consistency shouldn't keep you from sitting.
