*UPDATE* Someone told me to bury my cakes. 1

So, I did.
Boom.

All the cool kids were doing it.
I got two flushes out of this cake before threw it in an indoor planter and sprinkled a little coir on top. Loosely covered it with some plastic wrap until I saw these little beauties sticking their heads out. I have the same situation going in two other planters and they're blowing up.
The mushroom gods have smiled upon me, and now my cup runneth over.

Word I've been told you can use spent cakes and put them in the ground to get some more mushrooms growing. Glad to see it worked well for you

Not sure if technically a symbiosis. They're not really exchanging water, nutrients, or anything beneficial... but they're sure do look pretty in my planter.
They grow up so fast. I am a proud mama. *tear*

Mushrooms put off co2 and use o2, plants use co2 and put out o2. And they can exchange nutrients, among other things that is beneficial to both organisms. Mycorrhiza: http://www.waldwissen.net/wald/baeume_waldpflanzen/oekologie/wsl_mykorrhiza_lebensgemeinschaft/index_EN I just buried some old cakes yesterday myself

Quote:
Mycorrhizal fungi are especially effective in providing nutrients to plant roots. These are certain types of fungi that actually colonize the outer cells of plant roots, but also extend long fungal threads, or hyphae, far out into the rhizosphere, forming a critical link between the plant roots and the soil. Mycorrhizae produce enzymes that decompose organic matter, solubilize phosphorus and other nutrients from inorganic rock, and convert nitrogen into plant available forms. They also greatly expand the soil area from which the plant can absorb water. In return for this activity, mycorrhizae obtain valuable carbon and other nutrients from the plant roots. This is a win-win mutualism between both partners, with the plant providing food for the fungus and the fungus providing both nutrients and water to the plant. The importance of mycorrhizae in plant productivity and health has often been overlooked. EXAMPLE Pines are not native to Puerto Rico and therefore the appropriate mycorrhizal fungi were absent in the soil. For years, people unsuccessfully tried to establish pines on the island. The pine seeds would germinate well and grow to heights of 8 to 10 cm but then would rapidly decline. In 1955, soil was taken from North Carolina pine forests, and the Puerto Rico plantings were inoculated. Within one year, all inoculated seedlings were thriving, while the un-inoculated control plants were dead. Microscopic analysis showed that the healthy seedlings were well colonized by a vigorous mycorrhizal population. While the benefits of mycorrhizae is not always as dramatic, it has been well documented that mycorrhizal plants are often more competitive and better able to tolerate environmental stress.

I have a bed of babies growing in my back yard. I did not use spent cakes to start the bed but a virgin jar of colonized rye berries. I dug a shallow hole, put down a little coir, poured the colonized berries in, covered them with some coir, covered the coir with composted grass clippings and that with some dirt.
Then I jumped back and just in time! If I had waited 20 days more the mushrooms coming up would have...well who knows what they would have done? Anyway, this morning, a little more than three weeks after planting the berries, I saw three baby cubes raising their tiny brown heads out of the ground. They look very sturdy. I would guess that they will be stout in comparison with cake or tub born guys.

I like to bury mine in my indoor plants because the environment is easier to control. I did have a little patch out in my backyard, but it didn't yield as much as I hoped. My outdoor crop kept getting too dry. I've got a couple nice planters inside, so this way is just easier for me. The fruits seem meatier than the ones produced on the cakes alone.
Anyway, if anyone is not burying spent substrate (be it cakes, trays, or tubs) you really should give it a go. It's silly not to, and any mushroom that happens to pop out is just gravy in my book.
I'll post more pics tomorrow. I expect those veils to be tearing in the late morning.

For real? Better not be tryna mindfuck a cultivation noob.
So you crush a cake and bury it after a contam or after flushes are really slowing down?
Anyone got instructions or a tek to this?

Wouldn't expect much but than throwing the in the garbage, you might get a few extra. I just dumped some old verm and a little dirt/sand on the cakes in a shady spot. I've heard several people that do this. Speaking of hunting I'm waiting for fall, more ovoids!

Putting spent cakes in pots is a good idea--better control, as you say. Now, I wonder if it wouldn't make sense to try just pouring unspent spawn in a pot, then put coir over it and maybe some composted grass clippings and see what would happen. This would be watered every once in a while. I think I will give it a go.

As am I for Psilocybe subaeruginosa. I only have one patch that still produces fruits, but it's not producing much, only got 7 shrooms 2 nights ago. Here is my favorite picture of Psilocybe subaeruginosa from this years season.

Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata, are they potent?

Nice! Yeah they can be quite potent, had a level 3 trip off around 14 fresh grams this season. I got some nice pics from this spring in my photos if you want to check them out. Sorry for being off topic but I get fired up about hunting.
