Can I use another medium, earth, compost, fertilizer mixture for Button Mushrooms? I have no access to any manure. Thanks!

I found this recipe for substrate in a guide on cultivating Agaricus Campestris, released by Kansas State University:
"Mix together in a heap about 100 pounds of corn fodder or finely ground corn cobs and an equal amount of straw. Water and firm this well and let it stand a few days. Then mix in thoroughly 20 pounds each of leaf mold or peat moss, tankage, and either greensand or granite dust. Some well-rotted compost can be added to aid decomposition. About 30 pounds of sand completes the mixture. After a good watering, let it stand five or six days before turning. A second turning a week or so later should be enough before setting in the trays and planting. Plant the spawn as soon as the temperature of the beds reaches about 75degreesF."
I have never tried this recipe. I hope you let us know how well it works..

Good compost or good worm castings. Secondary decomposers love microorganism rich soil. which is basically the same as a good compost or worm castings which are naturally abundant on the forest floor. Personally I would use the home made stuff... but experiment with store bought products and see what works well for you. Manure is basically the same as compost. It just differs slightly in bacteria, fungi etc. and depending on the animal feed it can be pretty much the same (grass fed).

Think of it this way. Primary decomposers (oysters/shiitake/etc.) eat straw/wood which breaks it down into compost. secondary decomposers like agaricus spp eat compost and further break it down into a different form of compost. and so on...
make sense?

If you can find straw you can make a great substrate by just watering a bale and letting it sit, covered or in the shade. I used to garden directly into straw bales. by watering the straw bale you start the composting process. After a week or two you can break up the bale and give it a good mixing and watering to start another round of composting. Just make it into a pile and after a couple another week or two you will notice that the bale has turned into dark rich compost. From there I would cut it with wood chips or bagged mulch 25% for aeration and go from there.
That is a simple way to make compost. The more advanced method is to compost garden waste. This is done by either mixing the right ratio of carbon/nitrogen or using worms to do the job like I do. which is fast as hell and a more rich and consistent product.
