An interesting case of Mushroom Poisoning
    #22106758 - 08/18/15 01:25 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

A couple of friends had an unpleasant and frightening experience with mushroom poisoning two weeks ago.  I thought I'd post about it, because of the unusual circumstances that led to them being poisoned.

This is a married couple who live on several acres.  The husband was outside working, and noticed mushrooms growing.  He picked a couple, thinking they were some type of bolete, but noticed that they lacked a stem and a pore layer, and looked more like some type of puffball. Planning to try to figure out later what they were, he put them in the fridge.  Later on that evening, his wife was cooking a stir fry and added the mushrooms.  Both got extremely sick within a couple of hours, and ended up in the emergency room.

When they told me what happened, I questioned them both pretty closely.  The husband did not intend for the mushrooms to be eaten, and said that he absolutely knew he wasn't dealing with a bolete, or even anything he could recall observing in the past.  Neither of them have ever eaten mushrooms that they hadn't positively identified.

In case you're wondering, after looking at cell phone pictures, I found that they had eaten a Scleroderma sp, most likely S. cepa.  And both said they were delicious.

They're extremely common round here in the autumn. It's fun to flick the older ones and watch the spores come out. I've never thought about eating them.

Yea, if you're going to put something in the fridge that shouldn't be eaten it's always best to label it.

I've never eaten edible puffball. I wonder if you hollowed a fair amount of the core out and stuffed it with a little choice cheese and bacon slivers breaded it with a little garlic on the breading and fried it if it would taste like a son of a bitches?

That would be shizznittlebamabam. Only 4,000 calories and limit one per day. Call them smoobles, because you know whatever.

But for real, :whathesaid:

If I had a puffball for every time I heard that I'd go and pick one that I was unsure of and put it in the fridge and tell my twelve year old son to make me a garden salad.

I'm the pot calling the kettle black. I ate a small chlorophyllum molybdites specimen before I found the safety of shroomery that was growing right beside a cow patty. "This is it! My first cube!" Chuck Norris kicked his way out of my asshole later that evening. It almost ruined mushrooms for me. But hey...The more you know!

What did she mistake them for?

I can't imagine anyone just slicing up whatever they find laying around without questioning what it is.

What kind of toxins are actually in them?

i'm sure she thought it was some interesting edible wild mushroom her husband found. why else would it be in the fridge, she probably thought...  she probably thought "i'm going to surprise hubby with this neat little treat he found for dinner tonight."

i can total see how that would happen.  shitty luck... no pun intended.

She told me that she assumed they were boletes because of their firm texture.

No idea of the toxins involved, but both recovered within a matter of hours after purging their meal.

I don't know how you can know what a bolete is and mistake it for an earthballs.

Also curious how prev. poster mistook chlorophyllum molbydites for a cube...

Does anyone elseen collect the movable rings from molbydites? They smell like cinnamon rolls once dried and look really cool. I have two hanging in my cubicle at work!

It was before I knew about the shroomery and mushroom identification. It was growing literally up from semi fresh cow sung, (first couple times hunting before finding actual cubes) had the Brown nipple and veil, though not purple was definitely there. The blue green gills I figured was staining, for whatever reason. Then I brought it to an old hippy friend of mine and he said "You got a good mushroom there bud" and popped a piece of the cap in his mouth. So I was like Hell Yeah. Then I was like aHell No.

Also yeah I didn't catch the scaly nip and the loose veil. But I did catch the shits.

I never knew that Scleroderma sp toxic. They look really unappealing so I never felt like I wanted to try one.

The author of The Horse Whisperer nearly killed his family by mistaking a deadly Cortinarius for a King Bolete.

The C. molybdites/cubensis mix up seems fairly common.

I've only heard of mistaking it for parasol. That makes sense with the green staining thing. I am too afraid of molbydites to eat parasol mushrooms; so I just collect the rings. I wonder if the rings are edible? I've even heard people cook the dick out of molbys and eat them and say they are fantastic.

Clearly Nick Evans didn't know what a bolete was or he wouldn't have mistaken an agaric for one. I mean come on. Great transcript of an interview on it here: http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/interviews/interview/1000271/

apparently nobody's been interested enough in pigskin puffballs to have a look at whats in them.  best i could find in a quick google was a guess that it involved indole compounds.

however, i did find this chart kinda interesting
