The I Ching questions
    #22106601 - 08/18/15 12:30 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I was totally disinterested in the I ching after hearing terence mckenna's incoherent ranting on the subject, but after reading an intriguing reference to the I ching in a carl jung book I felt I needed to look into it.

I was hoping somebody who's done this before could give me a little guidance as I'd rather not buy/read the book (my main goal is so do "the tosses.") as I have other books that need reading.

Is it feasible to do the tosses and interpret them without reading the book? Am I ignorant about important aspects of the I ching due to my focus on the tosses?

You may find more answers in the S&M subforum.  Sure it's feasible to formulate your own interpretation ov the hexagrams so long as you know their correspondence and can associate.  I just always used Crowley's liber 216.  The most important aspect ov using the I-Ching IMO is about how you concentrate on what you're asking ov the reading.  I touch on this in this following post i made from 7 years ago:

I find the I-Ching to be a phenomenal divinatory system and use it frequently.  I've gone against the advise of the reading numerous times and have always gotten bit.  I use liber 216 for interpretation: http://hermetic.com/crowley/libers/lib216.html

When looking at those poems, one can say that there are many ways to interpret it.  However, I've found that they become easy by the way you concentrate upon the question.  It is paramount to concentrate on the question as it would happen.  Never ask a yes or no question or what you should do.  To illustrate, say you want another car when the one you have is working fine.  The proper way to do it would be the concentration of you in the car, driving it around, etc.  If you concentrate on the concrete question, or simply what you should do, there leaves room for a lot of error.

Also important is that there is no bias towards a reading prior.  It is best to have it absent from your mind prior to the reading.  This is why I usually do a banishing and/or other rituals prior.  (Al I,44;)).
How I do the I-Ching:
-With robe and nemyss and stones layed out in front, I ease into a rhythm of breath(inhale/air, hold/fire, exhale/water, hold/earth) in the dragon asana position.
-At a point just above my head(the bottom of the point of concentration touching the crown of head), what I consider the kether energy center or crown chakra, the question is played out.
-Keeping concentration, I pick up each individual stone(eyes closed throughout the whole operation) and turn them in my right hand until I feel the side which resonates best and transfer to my left.
-Once all stones are done, I clasp them in both hands over my tiphareth center or solar plexus chakra(most equate tiphareth to the heart chakra-I differ) and meditate for a few more moments.
-At the peak of concentration, the stones are cast.  Closest is line one, farthest is six.

As elaborate as that all sounds, it is really quite simple and only takes a few minutes.  I choose to use small smooth river stones, taken from an area that resonates deeply with me, due to their symbolism.  Painted on one side; the moving line is denoted by a dot.  Of course, a lot of this might be superfluous, and one can easily get by if the actual practice is performed properly.

Oh yes, time plays a factor in the readings.  If a situation is meditated upon for a certain time, and in practice played out at another, there might be a false reading as the conditions surrounding the situation might differ and have an impact.

In my experience very few people "read" the I-Ching entire but discover it, as you are doing, toss by toss. If you're coming at it via Jung, think of the book as a mirror you're holding up to your own subconscious -- the deep imagery can "see" through layers of rational, conscious thought and reflect a deeper meaning buried deep in that cerebral cortex. Don't worry so much about whether you're doing it right and just explore.

I wrote something a while back for WIRED about the book and why I wrote an app to access it which you might enjoy, and if you're wondering about whether to use coins or yarrow stalks, I highly recommend investigating the math: these two methods yield very different results!

--------------------
I wrote the first digital I-Ching app in 1989 (I think -- never found an earlier one!). My renderings are hippy mystic poetry: I've spiced up the 3000 year old wisdom with a little Grateful Dead here, a bit of TS Eliot there, a dash of Thomas Pynchon, some Alan Ginsburg, a pinch of Bob Dylan... you get the idea. I've ported the code to Android and IOS and distribute it for a modest sum. You can pick it up in the iTunes Store, on Amazon, and from Google Play from my website here.  I've also made (shhhhh!) a free random reading page available for friends of Shroomery.org! Furthur!!
