New Spine Growth on Old Areoles
    #22106183 - 08/18/15 10:52 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

This is the first time I have ever seen this, and it is not something that usually comes to mind to ask about or research.

I was looking at my approximately 3 year old monstrose pachanoi today. On two of the areoles more than halfway from the top, there is a single new spine growth.

Anyone else notice this?

Yes, I have a 6ft bridgesii throwing new spines from areoles near the base. It seems quite random as to where they will grow.

Yep. I've noticed this over the years and even pointed it out to a person who has one of the oldest cactus gardens in my country. He'd never noticed it until I pointed it out. It wasn't on a Trichocereus either.

Bridgesii's, like Mostly has demonstrated in the pictures, put out long spines further down the cactus after a couple of year. Peruvianus also do this. I've got a knuthianus putting out massive secondary central spines right now.

Trichocereus pachanoi monstrose. New growth and the base of the column. On this one the long spines start coming after a few years.

I noticed it on a bridge I repotted after buying.
