Pocket watch I found when I was 8 years old turns out to be 100+ years old!
    #22105843 - 08/18/15 09:04 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

When I was 8 years old me and my dad went to te scrapyard to get some car parts. M dad was sort of a mechanic by hobby so this was something we used to do quite a bit. When he was pulling out car parts I would play around in the broken cars and stuff just being a kid. Occasionally I'd find some pocket change or a cool key chain maybe.

Well this one day I remember climbing through an Oldsmobile that was totalled, it was right fucked up, inside I found a pocket full of American coins which probably all together was about $2, and I found a pocket watch.

Here is said pocket watch:

When I got home I tossed it into my treasure box of cool shiny things and went about life normally. Fast forward another 16 years to last night as I'm going through boxes of old shit at my dads house and I find some of my old treasures, this watch included. So I hop online and go to a pocket watch database in which I enter the serial numbers printed on the watch case and movement inside.

To my surprise I found out the watch case was made by a company called Elgin in 1873!
The watch movement was made by a company called Waltham in 1896!
Holy shit I think to myself what are the odds lol. I had expected it to be an old watch but not nearly that old! Now the watch does not work and the hands plus glass front are missing but the important stuff on the inside of the movement seems to be all there.

I have not bothered to look into how much it may be worth because I figure I'll just keep it and get it fixed. Then get a nice sterling chain and maybe use it from time to time when I dress up. The watch itself is made of silver so I'm sure it'll polish up real nice. Either way it's a great conversation starter.

it almost looks like a verge fusee mainly because of how it comes out of the case but i don't see anyplace for a key.  The verge fuse's have 2 thick plates with gears inbetween and a chain that runs them.  I see a gap on the side that almost looks like that.  but i also see some gears on the back so im guessing its not one of those?  it almost looks like something inbetween that and the more modern movements.

anyways you can get hands on ebay for like $3.  The glass depending on size can get expensive as nobody makes them, so its all old stock/used.  Its also tricky because not only do you have watch size, but also case type involved when matching the glass, and most of the people selling them don't go into that much detail so you can end up with something thats close but doesn't quiet work.  Hunter watches (closed face) didn't have as much curve to them to make room for the lid closing.  anyways prolly $10-$20 for the glass, unless you go plastic but to me that just ruins it makes it seem like a kids toy.  so when shopping glass your almost better off just buying another watch for $50 snatching the glass then throwing plastic on it and reselling it

also looks like your missing the loop to connect the chain to, that you could make yourself.  depending on the hole size something like a coat hanger cut to size might work, then plate it silver or paint it silver, or ebay it but you could just end up with something someone did similar.

lastly you want a good quality silver restoration polish/chemical.  From what i hear you have to be really gentle when you use it, as what your trying to do is convert the black stuff back to silver, but what most people end up doing is rubbing the black stuff off thinking they are polishing a car or something, and then they end up with all the engraving worn off, or take it down to the brass.  the chemicals make it almost turn to a liquid, its really tricky to do right

as for value it mostly comes down to the movement.  verge fusee's are worth alot, but i don't think thats one of them, plus those are a bit older like 1700-1800's.  A cheap newer silver verge fusee goes for a couple hundred.  Popular makers and older ones go for thousands.  Waltham is a mass producer like elgin or hamilton so im guessing that one would be somewhere around $100 fixed up unless that movement is rare and desired

This movement was made in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1896 and only 200,000 of this model were made. The case was made in Elgin, Illinois in 1873 and only 73,000 of this model were made. So I think it's at least a little rare.

1800's pocket watches are highly collectible and sought after!

Nice find!

I have a few pocket watches and music boxes myself. Nothin special though.
It really intrigues me the way they figure out how to tim all the little gears and shit to work right.

Lol all this new tech we have yet its the old tech i find more intriguing.
