Survey: Teen drug use falling
Friday, December 19, 2003
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- An annual survey by the government showed a marked decline in the number of American teen-agers using illegal drugs, officials said on Friday.
Drug use fell by 11 percent among students between the ages of 13 and 18 over the past two years, according to the survey. The percentage of teens who had used drugs in the past year declined to about 28 percent.
"Four hundred thousand young people are not using drugs today because of that decline," said Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson. "It is certainly an indication our message is getting out."
The numbers have been sliding in recent years after peaking in the mid-1990s.
"Teen drug use has reached a level that we haven't seen in nearly a decade," said John Walters, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
The White House set a goal of reducing illegal drug use by 10 percent by this year and had achieved that with teens, said Thompson, who nonetheless expressed concern about a rise in the the illegal use of painkillers like oxycontin.
Several surveys have also shown reductions in teen smoking and drinking, health officials said.
"Instances of teenagers being drunk have gone down," said Walters. "Young people deserve the credit."
He said there was no single reason for the decline, but a government advertising campaign, together with community and parental efforts had all contributed. The five-year goal is a 25 percent reduction in teen drug use.
Crackdowns on supply also seemed to work, Walters said, citing the seizure of a giant LSD lab in an Oregon missile silo in 2000, believed to have made the equivalent of about 20 million doses. "We didn't even fully understand how centralized LSD production was," Walters said.
The number of teens reporting they had used LSD fell to 3.7 percent this year from 6.6 percent two years ago, according to the survey, while Health and Human Services said lifetime use of ecstasy had dropped to 5.5 percent from 8 percent.
The survey also found the teen use of alcohol and cigarettes has declined every year since the mid 1990s.
The University of Michigan has been interviewing students since 1975 for the survey, which is based on questions posed to about 48,000 students at nearly 400 schools nationwide.

If any of that is true it is very sad.
They are selling lies to our children... and our children are buying.
Can anyone here imagine how the socio-cultural climate would change if kids stopped getting high altogether?

I'm not particularly sad that fewer kids are using drugs. I just hope kids these days aren't just getting more gullible and having more faith in "the system".

That is whats happening...its hard to watch. You try to explain pot to someone, and the way they see it is its horrible because its illegal, and the laws are set in stone. It took me a long time to realize illegal drugs were not a certain thing.
I believe in free will and letting people choose completely what they will and will not do but I think it would horrible to see the government win and take away that choice and to see drug use become a non-existant thing... Thats why I've been trying to make people see the other side, and to atleast try drugs. Fight fire with fire

For the prohibitionists, this will be proof that the war on drugs is working.

*Again* drug use is going down so they must push harder to finish drugs off. And when they start coming back up then they must fight even harder. And when they go down again it shows that its working so fight even harder. Until we're dirt poor from paying all those taxes and they realize people stop and go effortlessly regardless of the law.

All they care about is the children. If they're not doing drugs, then to them it's working.
Once you're over 18, you can burn in hell as far as the prohibitionists are concerned.

I know, isn't that amazing? And no one listens! The war on drugs is having a complete opposite effect! So they keep trying harder
