Just got a pretty awesome compliment in Aikido class * 1
    #22104767 - 08/17/15 10:16 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

So most of the regs here know I do Aikido (a Japanese martial art. You can google it). I've been training at a new dojo for the last 2.5 years or so and am really enjoying it and learning new ways of things has been an awesome and rewarding process. A lot of you know that I recently tested for me 2nd degree black belt, which was quite an honor for the sensei to test me for that since I had only been with his dojo for 2 years. I'm very diligent in my training though, rarely miss a class, and it had been a long time since I tested for my first degree black belt, so I was able to test and passed back in March I think.

Well tonight we were training and it was a good class, and at the end of the class, sensei was saying something (he speaks mostly Vietnamese, so I could only hear that he said my name). After class was dismissed, one of the other students translated what he said to us. Basically he was telling the other students at the dojo who had trained elsewhere before that they should look up to how I train and how I was able to let go of my previous training and learn the ways of the dojo. I couldn't believe he said that to everyone! He's not generally one to heap out very much praise. He's very old school like that. He's 80 years old and has been training in martial arts for the last 65 years. He's quite a man to receive a compliment like that from.

I couldn't believe it.

The last time one of my friends told me that Aikido didn't work, I submitted him into a wrist lock in seconds. He's a burly dude who wrestled all through highschool and was a long time bouncer.

I've trained with a few ex BJJ guys who came to the dojo. It does work very well.

The bottom line though is that it is a physical and spiritual exercise that has greatly contributed to the quality and enjoyment of my life. I'm not trying to be an ultimate fighter. I haven't been in a fight since I was in Junior High, and expect that I never will be.

That's really cool. Aikido is related to judo, jujitsu, tai chi, and other arts. The similarity is that you don't use strength to overcome the opponents, you use leverage and their momentum against them. The higher levels of aikido much like higher levels of other arts use chi, also called ki, ji, etc, to bring about the result.

Chi is learned through proper technique, relaxation and focus. It seems counter intuitive to be relaxed when faced with violence but the one who is relaxed sees what to do and does it almost instantly. A chi master can knock you down without even touching you or just barely touching. Even karate teaches the use of chi in many of the styles. People think of karate as brute force but they also use throws and other techniques. No one style is dominant over all the others. If it were, then everyone would switch over to that style.

Well if you don't feel comfortable training, I guess you should follow your intuition, but generally just about anyone can start training in Aikido. I've seen all assortment of people over the years. Most teachers will work with you if they understand your condition.

How does the teacher know when you are ready for another belt?

How does the teacher know how to test you for another belt? Do he hold back his punches less and less or something?

I have no clue how that works. Enlighten me OP.

Well he's been training in martial arts for 65 years, so I can't pretend to understand his level of understanding about such things. Generally there's a certain number of hours a student must train to be able to be considered for advancement to the next level, but even if these hours are met, it's still up to the judgement of the teacher to decide if the student is ready to advance.

I don't know how OP's teacher does things but normally they want you to train for a certain period of time, demonstrate techniques and kata, which is a series of movements and then get tested. The test would be a demonstration of those things showing you have learned the moves and do them well. For higher belts you may have to spar with an opponent or demonstrate your tech with a partner. The kata will be a long series of blocks, strikes, counters, etc depending on the style you are studying. Even soft styles usually have some strikes.

No one strikes another in class. The only exception to that is full contact classes in which they use padded gloves and kicks, sometimes body protection too. Even then you are not supposed to strike an unprotected area. Some say strike without any contact, some say light contact. You are more likely to be hurt by a beginner who doesn't know how to pull the punch or kick, than an advanced student who does.

Another way to get hurt is with the wrist and arm locks. If they do them hard you can get a sprain. Asante, I would go to classes in your area and just watch. If you see them being rough and people getting hurt, its probably run by someone not good or who has a bad teaching tec. A good class will try to make sure no one gets hurt. You also want to learn how to fall, its very very important to learn that. Start lying down and slap, sitting up, squatting, then standing and falling. In judo at least, they progress on to forward rolls in which you run and dive hitting the mat, and then roll back onto your feet.

OP, I don't mean to hijack your thread with stuff about other styles

I'm not going to sit here and bash aikido because its rude and I don't live close enough to come change everyone's mind, but chi is bullshit. People don't get knocked down without force.

Listen to Chris asante...there's never a perfect time to start doing something you think will be hard. Jump in. Just don't buy into any chi bullshit along the way lol. One good tip I could offer is that if there isn't any sparring, regardless of the style, you are wasting your time.

Nice. What kind of training do you do? BJJ or mixed?

I can see how people can think that a more traditional non competitive martial art isn't worthwhile, but for me it's really about training in a beautiful art that I enjoy. I've trained in kempo and ju jutsu in the past, but I much prefer Aikido training. I guess I'm not a very competitive minded person and I appreciate the attitude of my aikido training partners compared with the types of attitudes I've met with in other training situations.

My first sensei was a police officer who had a lot of experience with using aikido in the field. My current sensei used to teach hand to hand combat in the Vietnamese army. I think they qualify as professionals but maybe not in the sense that you mean.

I think something is better than nothing. I'd rather a sedentary person take aikido or karate than just sit on the couch. I'm not OK with giving people false confidence with phoney martial arts. No one could ever wristlock a person with the slightest bit of experience in boxing/muay Thai/ jiu jitsu.

It's a shame you are trying to turn this into that kind of thread. It seems like we can never have a nice discussion about martial arts without everyone whipping their cock out to compare size.

NCM, that is an impressive video. You can imagine how much strength it would take to pick those big guys up and toss them around like that. I know the skeptics will say they were just jumping to make him look good but if you watch it carefully you see him many times making them go in the opposite direction they were headed. It was not strength it was chi. It also takes correct technique, focus and relaxation as I said. Does anyone here think they would be able to beat that guy in a real contest or situation?

Here is another video showing chi being used. Its not as dramatic as the one you posted but its good

As I said previously, no one style is dominant or all the students would go with that style. What is common to all is that the good practitioners use chi even if they don't call it that or even if they say chi does not exist. Chi is not a religion its force, a property of nature. Through relaxation, focus and correct tec, it flows. The people who try to do everything by strength only get so far. Everyone has chi but it takes training to be able to use it correctly.

I'm not going to talk about my own experiences with it. I have talked to people who worked with the masters and told about demonstrations. One story was he would get people to line up each touching the next, tell which one he would make fall down, touch the first one and the 6th one would fall just as he said. The guy said he did it on him and he fell down too. I asked what it was like and could he resist it. He said it was like trying to resist gravity.

See, that's the kinda shit that gets people hurt. If that demonstration really worked it could be done with the people wearing headphones and blindfolds but it doesn't. Knocking guys down without touching them only works on brainwashed students man.

So you think the demo was all fake? How did he do it then? And what has that to do with headphones and blindfolds? Go to a aikido dojo and tell them you think its fake and want a demonstration on you. Tell them you have trained a lot and are there to show them how foolish they are. They may give you a demo, they won't get mad, or you should hope they won't. It might be wiser to be a tiny bit humble about it or they might twist your wrist an extra bit after dumping you on the ground just so you remember the lesson.

Those guys in ncm's video did not just fall off the turnip truck, they each had a black belt and could do to you what he did to them unless you are as good as you think you are. Most people aren't.

I did some dojo storming when I started out. It's super rude. I've already trained everywhere within an hour of my house and settled on the gyms I train at now. I am as good as I think- I'm working on fighting professionally. No one has ever hit a standing wristlock in mma ever.

Again, I'm proud of you Chris! It sounds like it took a decade to earn your black belt which is how it should be. It's just that there is so much bullshit out there and Ive had broken bones and bled to get good so its hard not to throw my 2 cents in. I'll try to quit arguing and leave it at that. Congratulations!

Krav Maga would be far more useful for actual self defense.

I'd practice it as a physical meditative art.

Because I enjoy it. I trained in Kempo as a kid and wanted to get back into martial arts. In researchin martial arts, I narrowed it down to Ju Jutsu, Hapkido, and Aikido. I found a teacher teaching Ju Jutsu in the town I was in, but he wasn't able to attract a large enough class to keep a space and quit teaching. When he told me, he told me about an aikido class in the area. I went and started training and loved it. I've never looked back.

Asante, consider studying tai chi. Its a slow movement type exercise, meditative and can also be used for self defense.
