Building my first fruiting chamber...questions
    #2210468 - 12/30/03 08:31 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Will these river rocks work in place of geo-lite?

I was going to put my airstone in the bottom and place the big river rocks down first. Then put the garden pebbles on top with enuf water to cover the airstone.

My question is...
Do I need to put some perlite on top of the stones or will the stones work alone?

Will the airstones provide enuf air exchange or will I still need to fan?

Here is a pix of the container.

I have 2 airstones and 2 airpumps to hook them up to.

The pebbles won't really do much.

The point of the material at the bottom of a PMP is to promote water entering the air. Geolite, lava rocks, and other material with a highly fractal surface does just this. The actual surface area of these types of material is quite big, while smooth river rocks wouldn't be nearly as much (and hence not nearly as effective)

One of the major reasons for moving to a PMP is to avoid the messiness that is perlite. Just get a better bedding material and skip the perlite entirely.

By "I", I of course mean a good friend of mine who happens to live in the fine city of Amsterdam. "I" is just so less awkward.

Finding Geolite in Arkansas is damn near impossible to do. I have only found 1 and it is 300 miles away.

Would the airstones work just using Perlite? I was afraid that the perlite might hinder the airflow. That is why I was going to use the rocks at the bottom with the perlite on top.

If I can get some lava rocks what kind should I look for. How deep should the lava rocks be?

use lava rocks the same way you would use geolite, about 4 inches deep with about 2 inches of water.
the perlite by its self may work but it's possible that you'll just end up with a big soupy mess.
try it,what do you have to lose?
