I used it on my work boots. That's about it. It was mostly just to give them a bit more of an edge to last and help keep them water resistant (spending 12 or so hours in wet boots fucking sucks). I dunno how much it really helped, but it takes like 5 minutes or less and anything is better than nothing.

I do it on my boots and my dress shoes. Brings them back to life and hides/fills the scuff marks. I have a few different brushes, cloths and lots of different colors of polish. I learned to do it from my grandfather. But of course I'm a lot older than most of you. I remember when lots of places had shoe shine booths with people waiting and wanting to shine your shoes

This. I shine my shoes. It keeps them looking nice, extends the life of the shoe, and costs a few bucks for a can of polish. Well worth it IMO.

When people get to the stage of needing shoe polish, they usually pay people to apply it or make their wives do it for free

It is for horses. Some disciplines use it for formal competitions, looks like this, it's called hoof polish tho.

They even come in glittery colors for little kids.

I grew up with this shit and it always seemed so normal, but the longer I stay away from horse people the more I realize how fucking weird it all is.

That's from "Taxi Driver". It totally revitalizes a can of shoe polish that gets old and the pieces start cracking.
As far as who uses shoe polish anymore. As mentioned it's people who wear dress shoes or leather boots. It's not just an appearance thing; it makes them last a lot longer. I have black, brown and cordovan, but I can't remember the last year I used any besides black, because I haven't been working in an office for a long time.
A good example of how shoe polish became mostly irrelevant. Think of "Goodfellas" where the gangsters are wearing the best dress clothes in the 50's and 60's, and then in the 70's they are wearing jogging suits and running shoes. It follows the same arc as Frank Sinatra's rise and fall.
You still usually need polished leather shoes if you work in most professions,( but some professions are much more appearance oriented than others; think of finance vs engineering) Personally, I hate working day shifts so much, that I threw away the advantages of two graduate degrees (one was particularly worthless) to do anything at night that pays; painting empty houses, driving forklifts etc. as long as there is overtime. I now have no use for my brown or cordovan shoes. Black is it for work, weddings, funerals or court(thank god that's over).

Just a complete insomniac who sleeps better in the daytime. One semester in grad school I got scheduled to TA an 8 O'clock class. The professor I worked for wasn't happy about it either. She said she would teach the class on Monday, Wednesday and I would teach it on Friday. This worked perfect because I had no Friday classes. I would stay up all night on Thursdays, teach the class at 8 and then sleep all day, then play the Friday night poker game we had going for 5 years. The funny thing was that the professor I worked for and her boyfriend (both demography professors in my department) used to play in this same poker game which consisted of 5 history PhD students. When they found out I was going to start playing there they stopped going because it was an all night weed party. I guess they had no problem doing it with grad students from another department, but didn't want to do it with me because I was a grad student in their department and they were assistant professors.

we called em "mops" cause they drip everywhere
never polished a shoe in my life but I've probably gone through a dozen bottles.

Of course it still exists. The military, navy, Air Force use it all te time on their parade boots. Those fuckers have boots so shiny you can count your teeth in them.
You can buy shoe polish at dollar stores even.

Yeah fair enough. The professor was probably trying to avoid any possible controversy. In terms of working conditions, I think id enjoy night shifts a lot more because I hate dealing with people. But I also know people who work night shift and hate it too because majority of the people they know are on day shifts and the schedules don't match. The thing is as well that most of the high paying jobs are in the daytime too. In general I think daytime is better with all things considered.
It's kind of funny though how it's easy to stay up during the night, and then once the sunrises you feel like a vampire and have struggle through the long slow shitty day. With all the breakfast shows, news shows, crappy radio, and just nothing happening like it does at night time, lol.
