callous on guitar strumming finger

So I've been doing a lot of strumming on the guitar and my finger brushes against the strings sometimes and it's accumulated a tender callous type growth on my finger. I use a bandaid to continue playing but it's still uncomfortable to really get into strumming.
I imagine GuitarCenter has a finger guard or something for this occurrence (maybe not)...Anybody buy anything for a similar situation they've been through and how was it?

The pain goes away. But just keep playing until you develop hard callouses Havent you ever heard of "played until your fingers bleed"? But are you saying your finger hits when your strumming with a pick? Cause you need to change how you hold the pick then. If your strumming with your fingers you just need to play past it

play through the pain my man. once you get past the tender stage, the skin will get nice and tough and annihilate those strings.

Yea it's with a pick. My bottom knuckle keeps hitting the strings if that's any indicator as to how I'm holding it...Never even considered changing how I hold the pick

Spend about as much time unlearning the wrong way you are strumming, learn to strum the right way.
That goes for about any bad technique in guitar. Of course, most people don't have the patience to back up and unlearn a bad technique, especially if they have been playing for years.
But if it's not that bad, it might be something you can fix just by switching picks or holding your pick differently. Hard to say without watching you play. Maybe check out some vids on how to properly hold a pick and see if it's that or just the way you've learned to strum. While you're at it, you may want to check out other technique lessons to see if you're doing anything else wrong. That's the problem with bad technique. At first you don't realize because you can play fine that way. But then later it starts to become a problem and it's too late to unlearn it by then. Good technique is something you don't notice if you're doing it right. But if you're not, then it starts to suck when you try moving up to higher guitar levels. At some point everyone runs into technique issues. I have an problem with holding my pinky on my fretting hand a bit too far from the strings. It's never a problem until I want to play some Steve Vai shred shit. Then it's suddenly a huge issue.
You might think it's not important because you're not planning on being some great guitarist. But as a guitar teacher, I try not to let my students limit themselves like that. You never know where you might go with it.

Stevie Ray Vaughan would take the callouses that ripped from off his fingers and use superglue to paste them back on. He would also mix Jack Daniels and cocaine in his cups of coffee every morning. Give it time and your callous will harden like SRV's stomach.

I saw Albert Collins play in a tiny club many times. Stood right next to him. He didn't use a pick at all. His fingers were totally calloused.

if its an acoustic, thats a given. if its electric, get flat wound strings. The more you play the tougher you fingers get obviously.
In a pinch, my friends who play metal and punk music sometimes put little dabs of super glue on their fingers as a buffer between their skin and strings.
Seriously tho, keep playing. Ive been playing for 16 years and my left finger tips are rocks

They actually had a spray at guitarcenter.I think it was called finger eaze .It prevents callouses and makes it easier to slide up and down the neck.In my experience though after playing for awhile and the callouses build up it tends to help more in the long run for me that is.But i havent played on a long time as im more interested in piano. Finger Eaze

If you play guitar, developing rock hard callouses is one of the goals. Trying to prevent them is foolish.
Finger eaze is used to reduce drag for easier sliding, nothing about preventing callouses.

I agree wholeheartedly. My misrake it says reduces finger soreness.I actually thought it said reduces callouses Its been a couple years since i had any but i could of swore it said that. It does say your callouses will be smoother and softer.Possibly could help Op.

Why oh why did I learn how to play guitar only using picks and power chords all those years ago?
I'd give my calloused right nut for that man's calloused right hand.
Just switched to the acoustic less than a month ago. Kicking my finger's ass all day but it's a good pain.

Go to the music forum. I posted a concert by him in 1979 at Montreaux. You do not have to wait for it to get great.

It's not that I don't want callouses, it's that this callous was making practice difficult because I'd get in rhythm and brush a string with it and the discomfort would throw me off.
I'm gonna take everyone's advice and quit being a pussy. I upped the weight of my pick and that solved my problem.

If you are strumming so much that you are getting callouses with a pick, then you must be strumming hard. Work on your technique. I can mute, strum, and play all day long and my right hand not get sore. I play with a heavy pick for acoustic and medium for electric.

On a similar note, I've been doing a lot of fingerpicking the past few days. Had a callous on my ring finger and it fell off so I now have tender skin on that finger but I want to keep the momentum rolling and keep fingerpicking.
I think I know the answer but should I just keep playing and let this new skin toughen up or give it a couple days to recover?

Indeed. I just stumbled upon a product that's a slap in the face to guitarists everywhere:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gorilla-Tips/Fingertip-Protectors.gc
OP, is this along the lines of what you're looking for?

I just want someone to say quit being a pussy. The callous is off and the new skin is red and tender without playing the guitar. I'm still pickin with it until my rhythm gets funked due to that finger and then I switch to some exercises with my pick, but I just don't want it to get to the point where my fingerpicking is sidelined because I picked it raw.
I suppose if I pick it to that point I could just get that product

I pick my callouses every time I get them and have played for probably 10 years. sometimes it hurts, sometimes it doesn't, I've learned to ignore it. when I play along with Albert King and I bend strings to the moon I really, really feel it.

Lol. I was just being a dick. I've bitched and moaned countless times since I switched to primarily playing an acoustic. Luckily since I've been playing for quite some time with an electric, my left hand (fret hand) is already calloused.
I feel your pain with your strumming hand though. I've used a pick my entire life so building these callouses on my right hand have been hurting quite a bit.
Maybe that product I posted would really help you out. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I'm considering placing an order myself.
