Can you comment on these pics and what you think is going on?
    #22102012 - 08/17/15 09:33 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

This first set of pics is from my first grow.  First harvest was a few days ago.  Details about the grow:

* Rye berry cased with 50/50 verm/coco coir
* 77-83F ambient room temp
* Fan three times a day
* Air pump through mason jar of distilled water with polyfil filter
* Humidity is 99% all the time
* Been adding water to the rye seed by carefully pouring distilled water in the space between rye cake and container, draining what remains in the morning

Based on these pics and the info presented above, should I be picking these shrooms off now to make room for more pins?  I'm thinking the dark brown heads are aborts and should be picked off but really not sure.  Also concerned about the larger shrooms looking like they are shriveling up.

I also have a question about my second grow.  It is identical to my first grow, just larger in scale.  I am worried that the mycellium is looking funny and different from my first grow, what do you guys think?

Love these forums by the way, and thank you to everyone who has posted in the past, reading through these forums has really helped me substantially.

You have a bad case of lack of FAE and overly wet environment.

See those fuzzy feet at the bottom? That means they're not getting enough fresh air so the mycelium is crawling up the base of the mushroom to avoid a high CO2 environment. This is common when people use things like air pumps and all that fancy jazz where the rest of us just use holes a perlite.

I see you did drill holes in that tote. They look to be about the right size but they're not spaced correctly. It should be 1/4" holes every 2", not what looks like 4". All sides, top and bottom included, with 4-5" of wet perlite below it. this would have given you better results.

Your temperatures are fine, I prefer to do everything at room temp though.

You only have to fan when you mist. Fanning is not FAE, it's to destroy the climate of the bin and force humidity to occur.

You do not want 99% humidity at all times.

To often new members come on and believe two things: A) They need 100% RH to get good mushrooms, B) They need to achieve this using fancy shmancy air pumps and humidifiers and automate their set up as much as possible and C) their digital hygrometer is correct.

Digital hygrometers were not made for these environments and are therefore obsolete for this hobby. Your mushrooms will tell you 100x more then what a hygrometer will, you just have to be able to listen

In the wild, everything fluctuates. We're creating an outdoor environment inside and not only mimicking it but improving it as well. In the wild cubensis (Magic mushrooms) have access to more FAE then we give in an SGFC or monotub. Some days are dry, some days are cold, some days are wet, etc but the basis of this paragraph is that nothing stays at 100% humidity at all times.

Pin formation is a direct result of many things but one factor is evaporation of water from the substrate. Imagine if you had a cup and it was 99% empty 100% of the time. You would only be drinking 1% water, which will take a lot of drinking to fill you up. If the RH is at 99% then your air is saturated and evaporation will occur but at a MUCH slower rate.

What you have there is a weird version of a PMP (Poor-Mans-Pod).

Quote:

RogerRabbit said:
Then think outside the box and build a shotgun terrarium which fixes all the problems with outdated PMPs and does so with natural air currents.

The problem with PMPs was and is the steady-state humidity.  Mycelium wants a varying humidity level to pin and fruit properly.  A shotgun terrarium goes through these daily oscillations as the temp and humidity in the room its in changes throughout the day.  A PMP is isolated from these changes, thus develops a steady saturation-humidity level which impedes pinning and growth.

Take a quick look at all the so-called 'automated terrariums' over the last ten years via the search function and try to find one single grower who is still using one.
RR

You also don't need to add water, much less distilled. Use plain ole tap water like the rest of us.

Also why are you adding water that's probably the reason for the 99%humidty. You mist if necessary and only add water from dunking in my experience

One of the reasons my setup is like this is I was copying a buddy of mine who has been able to grow some 8"- 10" beasts consistently using just a air pump, no misting and fanning once a day if that.  He also does not have any holes drilled in the tub for FAE which makes me even more confused how his grow does so well.  I'm gonna lay off misting and increase fanning to 5-7x a day.  Also will add a lot more FAE holes.  Thank you for that advice.

Do you think I should pick off those bigger shroomies or do you think they will still grow?

None of those look ready.

Read my post.

Do you want height or mass? I'd rather have 100 5" shrooms that are fat as fuck then 500 8-10" shrooms that are skinny and dainty.

Don't fan without misting... Read my post please, you're missing out on valuable info and explanations lol.

I'm totally with you on the mass thing taGyo, here's a pic of the last second flush of my buddies tub (I take care of it now in my grow room)

You can see why I would want to mimic his setup to try and produce these fruits.  This was off a 8" x 11" rye spawned to some kind of compost/manure (it was a prepackaged kit).  Truth be told I'm such a noob at shroom cultivation that while the latter pic to me looks stellar, to a seasoned grower those may be average.

But, I completely understand what you are saying about FAE and fanning being different, the fact that automated aspects of a grow are not good b/c in nature conditions fluctuate constantly.

Looks like I have too much moisture on the mycellium, what I did was wipe down the cieling fan with lysol, opened the lids on both tubs about a 1/4 of the way and set the fan on low to evaporate some of those water droplets.  After a few hours of that the plan is to close them back up and fan twice a day misting in the morning and night.  I'm talking about the batch that hasn't pinned yet btw. I would like to stick with the air pump just b/c I really don't want to mess with the perlite, I tried it, ended up taking it out and putting a air pump on it.  In theory I don't see the difference between saturated perlite and a filtered airpump through water, they both do the same thing.  Both get the RH to 99% or am I missing something there.

yeah, holes all over your FC gives adequate FAE while a pump does not.
rh isnt important, only humidity that matters is the one on the surface of your myc.
if that is low, just mist it with water. fruiting is not a sterile process. I'd keep the lid cracked open.
dont aim the fan near the tub, it'll dry it out way too fast! find a golden balance between fae and rh!

Also shroom genetics are nuts unless your isolating strains there's no way to tell what your gonna get even in a perfect environment. I think lol. Still somewhat new

For sure.  I copied a few different teks and came up with this for my next grow which will be rye spawned to bulk 1:3 ratio Then after colonization case with a 50/50 verm/coco.  Bulk sub will be cow manure, gypsum, ewc, compost and coco.  hoping for a huge harvest on that one!  but first gotta get past these first grows lol.

sounds like a plan! are you gonna use a monotub for this?

Why isn't the op misting? I would imagine he is getting enough fresh air with the air pump. The big ones look like they have a bacterial infection

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

also, for future reference, I'm not sure 50:50 coir:verm is the right mix...

I know Damion5050 has a bulk tek, but he's more 80:20 coir:verm

here's the tek

with your new trays, DO NOT mist.  if they were even close to that other grow when u misted it, they will likely have a vert infection too.

im not trying to scare you, but i battled that for a very long time man.  its spores are sticky.  it can spread easily from grow to grow.  i would bleach ur misting bottle too

If I could go back in time and someone told me I had vert and that I should just throw out everything, I'd do it.
tub, mist bottle, everything assosiated with the fruiting of those tubs.
fuck vert.
