Striking roots in 100% perlite

I've got a pile of cuttings that I want to start rooting or at least position them to do so when they are ready. Its still winter here but we had two 29^degree celcius days last weekend and night times arent that cold any more.
Having made the mistake of trying to stubbornly winter root a few cuttings in soil/perlite/sand mix and having to then cut off the moldy/fungal ends has made me think of following the method reccomended by shaman australis, which is using only perlite. I'm thinking of doing this and keeping the cuttings indoors next to a window. But then, this guide also says to water the perlite cuttings which is like completely against what I thought was appropriate???
What do you guys think? And whats the deal with watering the cuttings.... Heres that shaman australis link. http://www.shaman-australis.com.au/knowledge-growing-columnar-cacti-from-cuttings.html

You never water until roots have formed. Then water sparingly. Perlite is good for this because excess water drains through. The only issue you might have it stabilizing the standing cutting.

Cacti don't really need to root in anything. I stand my trich cuttings up in an empty clay pot after callousing, and leave them in a south facing window over winter. In spring, they are starting to root and ready to be potted up watered with the rest. Putting a few large stones between some ribs helps to keep them upright.
