You gugs are definitely doing us a gret service by correcting thr manufacturers mistakes, thankyou!!! One more question... I decided to keep the tray insde the bag (of course with holes) but then have placed that insid the cardboard box to keep light from reaching it and prevent side pinning. is that a good idea? Only light hits the tray from the top

Light doesn't cause pinning. But I doubt the box would hurt either lol. It's kinda whatever you like man. Does that make sense?

Yeah it does make sense. But, from what know, dont the shrooms grow toward the light????????? Thats why i put the case isnde the box so the see throguh case would mot have cause the shrooms ti hrow towards the light causing a couple of them to grow on the side of thr box. That is what i meant.

They grow towards the light but light is not a pinning factor.
I'm in the camp that it aids in pinning but just having a light on a substrate without any other conditions will most likely NOT induce the pinning. Full colonization, adequate fresh air, evaporation rate, humidity and a few others I would consider primary.

Ok so question then, full colonization meaning????? For instance: i know what that basically means is that the mycellium has to fully grow on the sunstrate, like fully grow in the jars before u pop them out for a pf tek. but what about casings. i see shrooms pop out of the top layer of substrate without the top being completely white from mycellium. So do it vary? Ive seen lots of pics of cssings thst were fruting eithiut thr top lsyer all white and fluffly, yhe sifes were and probaby middle and everywhere else though.

That's colonizing. See the white myc taking over the brown substrate?
This is fully colonized:

I completely understand that but ive seen a lot of pics on here of peoples casings that were not fully colonized with mycellium on the TOP layer that were STILL fruiting mushrooms. So im guessing the top lsyer is the last one to colonize and that it doesnt hsve to look like the above picture completely? Sorry i never did a casing befkre.... just of tek.

Mad Season said: After the trays are 100% colonized I throw a layer of soil looking shit over it (peat moss and verm) and throw it into fruiting conditions. This will retain moisture at the surface of the mycelium, and mushrooms will poke through it. All that a casing is, is a moisture barrier used to initiate pinning of a fully colonized substrate.
This is before a caisng:

After:
This is it pinning through a casing:
Still fully colonized. The main pinning trigger after full colonization is constant evaporation through fae, and constant glistening via misting.

Ok gotcha...again your providing the simplest yet most in depth eplanation to the whole process. but what about how it relates to my type of grow box? So let me start over....now that i know everything. This has been a huge re learning process for me...and i thanjyou all so much for it. so when i bought the grow kit and soaked it for about 15 hours and placed it inside of the bag, it looked almost fully colonized except there was a layer of rye and verm on top i think. The top layer was bare. Everywhere else the mycellium had colonized...the middile, the sides, everywhere. It was nice and white and thick. I was under the impression that the top lsyer had to colonize too. I postd pics and people said it was resdy to fruit. That was like 3 days ago. i poked a total of 18 holes in it but it was drying out after s few hours so i tape up another 6. looks a lot better now, like its steaming up in there more and getting plenty of fresh air, so im just misting a few times a day and airing it out and waitin at this point. Let me show you guys some pics i just took.....

Yes, the top layer colonizes. My tubs only get that white because I always add a top layer. Also I think you have a bit of bacteria in there Mad.

I see the pics in your gallery. I would have let those go, the top didn't colonize but I guess it'll act as a casing layer now so you're fine.

Hey, i apoogize, the first three pics were just taken today. Its hard to tell but the are colonizing on top rapidly since i followed instructions and poked holes in the bag. how long would it be before they can form pins? Any recommendations on what to do now? Im misting 4 or 5 times a day. more misting or less? Mycellium on top is forming nice strands, its thin because it kind of just started snd its hard to see. My camers isnt the best.

Keep it up , pinning is genetic and environmental so I could give you a rough estimate of 4-14 days to pin. If it takes longer then two weeks you may have a problem.
Mist until you see surface moisture but no pooling, don't fan and let the FAE wick it away. Mist when you no longer see surface moisture but not before. The evaporation of water is better then the accumulation for pinning. 4/5 mists a day sounds like you have a fair bit of FAE in there so when your fruits come in they'll be able to tell you if you're over-misting or need less/more FAE.

What do you mean you would have let them go? Thrown away?????? If so, why? Also it will act as a casing layer now?????? I dont understand...there id a casing layer of verm/ rye on thr top....abour 2 centimeters hih im estimsting. It was a kit that already came to my house as a casing. The mycellium was alresdy there. i think on page 2 of this thread, MAD SEASON, SENT ME A BUNCH OF LINKS WHERE HE ENCOUNTERED AN IDSUE LIKE MINE. HE HELPED THOSE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS LACK OF OF FAE BECAUSE THE BAGS WERE CHOKING THE airR OUT OF THE CASING.... so i read them all.....if you reead those threads youll see pictures and youll see that most if not sll o thrre casings were not covered with mycellium on the top neither still fruited verh well. i think he ehole point is fae , a light cycle, temps, and moisture st this point and really nothing elde.... agree??????

Sorry for the typos. I just basically meant that the kit from holland was already cased WITH MYCELLIUM GROWING IN IT WHEN BOUGHT IT.

that's just verm on top, it will act like the verm on rolled pf-cakes does. I'd keep the top of the bag slightly opened if it isnt. maybe even burn some pin head sized holes in the bag in line with the top of the container.
