What would happen: After the Green
    #22101127 - 08/17/15 12:18 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I have a jar with BRF that I inoculated for Costa Ricans.

Over time, this jar developed the Green Meanie on about 10% visible.

I believe I was able to kill the Green in the jar (its growth stopped), and mycelium is now starting around it.

What happens next? Will/Can the mycelium use the Green as food? Will it ignore the Green? Absorb the Green and make bad mushies?

I don't think I'll actually be birthing this one at all, but am just wondering what could be going on in there.

The only way you could kill it in the jar is by pressure cooking the jar, which is a good idea.I've watched myc grow around and over trich in a plate but it cannot kill it. The green is the trich sporulating, so initially your jar was contaminated and now there are millions of times more trich spores. Trich mycelium is very whispy, it's easier to spot on a bulk sub than in a cake or in grain because against white mycelium it blends better. If you were to birth it the cake would become a green castle very quickly. Don't open that bad boy inside.

That wasn't trich then. Most likely aspergillus or penicillium.

Literally impossible. That's what they're saying. There's way more molds other than trich that are green and granular. Also there are other molds that are white that aren't mycelium. Real trich will shred up cube mycelium

I wouldn't bother cutting it. Trich is parasitic. It's a lot more than that green spot. That's just the sporulation. Trich is actually white and it's definitely intertwined in your mycelium now.

@OP, if it's aspergillus it can colonize over it, but the mold will lay dormant, and it isn't worth the risk. If it's trichoderma (which it most likely isn't, since it stopped growing) it'll take over the mycelium. Overall green = toss!

Tossmuch y it, not worth contaminating any other cakes with it. I doubt very much you could get rid of it.

I started getting Green in the other jars, too. So I just tossed all of it and will start over.

Thanks for your help, all!
