need expert input and advice ASAP!
    #2209995 - 12/30/03 03:17 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

OK. I am officially frustrated. I have put so much energy and so many prayers to the shroom gods for a successful 1st cultivation attempt but so far...nothing. I cased about 1 week 3 days ago and i started fruiting 4 days ago but the casing looks kind of dry even though I have been fanning and moisting. I have two heaters in close proximity keeping the rh relatively high. I don't see any pinheads. The crumbled cakes have some of the casing vermiculite stuck to them and the rhizomorphic growth didnt spread over the crumbled pieces like I thought it would. I know, I need to be patient and wait longer. I should see some pinheads within a few weeks right? Is there anything I can do at this point to ensure that I get SOMETHING? PLEASE HELP ME.......I AM IN DIRE STRAITS!

Have you tried PF cakes yet? If not I'd advise trying those first. It took me three casing attempts before I got it down right. Pins come when it's time to pin. I can't tell you when they'll pin. Stop worrying, forget you have shrooms growing, and they'll grow prolly. Assuming you've done everything correctly.

Double check you've got the right temperature (not too hot or you'll cook them and they'll smell really funky) and be patient   Took me two or three weeks the first time to see pins after I had started fruiting my cakes.  No worries.

Those heaters seem to be your problem. Don't use them to get rh levels up use perlite or a humidifier (it probably drying it out) also check for contams (odors, mold, etc.) What are your temps like? high temps definitley have an adverse affect. Ditch the heater unless you live in siberia.

When you began to fruit what was the condition of the casing? you should be seeing mycelia spikes coming up through the top layer of the casing in various areas.

Make sure your around 75ish they don't need to be that hot when fruiting, my last crop was around 65-70 degrees. Think about some perlite humidification with fanning.

Also take a look at the thread in Advanced Cultivation forum about temperature cycling. It should interest you.

I agree, you don?t need the heaters at all. If you say it?s too dry then that?s your problem. Mushrooms are 90% water and the cultivator should provide the right amount of water if a desirable amount of shrooms are expected at harvest. You should moisten the casing layer once it is applied and you should follow the waterings for 3-4 days. Not light misting, it should be wet. That?s Nan?s method and it works wonders, at least for me.

I disagree with the casing being "wet" too wet a casing layer will mat it down and inhibit further growth, not to mention harbour contmas much easier. Light periodical mistings coupled with perlite should be more than enough.

First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

I don?t know your method, but IME when using grains or flours made out of grains there is a need of delivering enough amount of water to support nice big flushes. Maybe is because I live in a place where RH is 30-40% all the time and everything gets dry very fast. In fact I cracker dry my shrooms just using a cool air fan
