These seedlings are just over 2 months old. What is happening? why are they brown? why are they getting spindly?

that's crushed perlite. a thin layer over the 50/50 perlite soil mix. They are in a humidity chamber. I mist them a few times daily.

I am no expert, but I would think the roots would need something better than perlite to grow strong in.
Also are they getting enough light, I think the term is etiolated, which means they grow spindly from lack of light.

Is the soil moist ? Doesn't look like. At this age, they need a moist soil and not only misting.

Oh poor babies. Is perlite even needed like that? I've only ever used soil. Or light perlite mixed in....
I agree, get them in moist soil.

Most batches of bridgesii I've grown aren't as vigorous as other species or hybrids seem to be. Some don't like much light sometimes either. I've got some now that are Brown and lanky, and I can't figure what their problem is.

Two of the pics are the same pot ofc. One is bridgesii, the other is torch.
This is happening to most of my trichs, and my saguaros. So far the others seem fine. Ive got about 250 seedlings though, and Id rather not lose them.
I think the watering was most of the issue. I will probably introduce stronger lights once they perk up.

I was letting the soil dry between mistings. oops
This is my first successful batch of seedlings, but I hope to keep them alive.
I went ahead and watered them. The light is as close as I can get it due to the humidity domes.

It looks like the perlite has bounded to an airtight crust. Scoop it out and replace it with some grit that will support the seedlings.

Not sure that can be done at the current time. The seedlings are so close in my pots.

Sand will eventually be colonized by algae that will bind it together to a crust. Larger grains are needed to shadow the substrate below (thus preventing algae growth) while still being an hostile environment (the support of the seedlings is a bonus).

I see. my perlite is being colonized by algae already. I will do what I can to fix the issue.
