Jars not colonizing the bottom
    #2209485 - 12/30/03 08:31 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

So, 5 1/2 weeks ago, I decided to try out pint jars for the first time. I inoculated 12 pints with Lipa Yai, and in the first 3 weeks they grew great. All 12 colonized up to about 1 inch to 1/2 inch from the bottom, and then completely stopped. I have tried flipping them upside down for the past week and they haven't gone any further still. I've never run into this problem with the 1/2 pint jars before, what should I do? Should I just drop them out and case them?

A trick I heard of was to shoot about 1mg of h2o2 down the sides of the jar, this was tried on something similar to what you are describing and it worked.

Or, try flipping them after hitting the jars on something like a desk or book and freeing the colonized part from the glass, it lets air get around in there better. I've had this happen and I've gotten around it. Try it.

What's wrong with birthing them as is, and scraping off the uncolonized part into the trash?

I never said anything was wrong with it. But why not first attempt to salvage that substrate instead of scrape it off and discard it?

My friend had this problem with his first pf jars. Out of curiosity, what is the heat source for your incubator? He was using a heating pad. Heating pads rob the air of moisture to produce heat. It dried out the bottom of the substrate so that colonization basically stopped. Once he switched to a different heat source everything turned beautiful for him. Just a thought.

Well I tried flipping them over and hitting the bottom last night so we'll see how that goes.

My incubator is the tub in a tub method. From what I can tell, the substrate looks moist still, at least on the outside where I can see it.

Thanks everyone

ImOver18 thanks so much for your suggestion! Ever since they broke away from the bottom of the jars they have resumed colonizing like champs!

I had this problem with a couple jars the first time I did pints, now when I inoculate I watch the spore jizz run all the way down to the bottom. This way they start colonizing each side from top to bottom.
