eggshells instead of oyster shell ?

can I use normal eggshells instead of oyster shell ? I guess it would be ok, but I am not sure, so I thought I'd better ask before I make a mistake.

Yes, if you:
- wash them
- roast them in the oven
- and grind them.

is roasting just necessary for drying them out ? Or is that going to change the chemical structure ?
how fine do they have to be grinded ? I mean does it have to be a fine powder or is it ok when they are little bit coarser ?

The finer the better, it helps them break down quicker the smaller the particals, I think roasting also helps them break down quicker as it super
drys them, making them a lot easyer to crumble to quite fine particals.

I don?t rememeber anymore exactly, but I guess 45 minutes at 220?C should be enough.
The aim is to dry them and to sterilize them.

It works well..but do as Anno says..roast them first to sterilise.

So crumbling is enough ?
I have tried to put them in a blender to produce a fine powder, but that did not work very well, since some of the shells always where "hiding" from the blades of the blender.

Once oven dryed, the back of a spoon in a bowl is enougth to get them
crumbled fine enougth.

I'd try roasting the shit out of them. If you hace a self cleaning oven, those fuckers get HOT!

Maybe, I have no experience using oyster shell. Is it interchangeable with lime or is it there for some other reason?

There was a thread that explained the chemical differences between lime, oystershells etc very well. But I cannot find it anymore. :frown:
