Cactus noob...

Hey farmers. I haven't posted here much since I lost all my salvia, etc. 6 years ago. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9698864#9698864
I received an unpotted Pedro (that's now in the light blue pot), and the little bridgesii family about 5 weeks ago. (birthday gifts from shroomerites ) It had decent roots 4-6" long, 10 or 20 of 'em plus shorter ones. The other 2 pedros I've had for over a year and are doing good. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20189655#20189655
I just noticed it browning the other day. Happened pretty quick. Cactus is a little softer than my 2 established ones.
Since I saw this, I've cut back watering for a few days and am giving it more direct light. I usually water all my plants every 2 - 5 day or so and it was getting about 5 hrs direct until today.(8+ hrs)
How sick is my cactus?
Also, repotted this,

to this
Center pot is removable for future gifting.
Now it has white spots. They're hard and don't scrape off very easily. Where I tried it exposed the flesh.

Any ideas? . . .

it looks like rot. Is it squishy at all to the touch? I think you might have to chop that one.

The one with the brown/black color creeping up it is likely rot. If it feels squishy at all I would chop off the top including only nice firm green parts, let it dry nicely and callous, then repot.
The white stuff is nothing to worry about. Just skin blemishing. Leave it be, there's nothing to be done about it.
I like how you have one pot inside another there in that one pic, I like that look.

I second everything cowsRmeat just said.

Well I cut it up, maybe some of these will take. 2 in a 4" round pot, 1 in a 3" square one. The other two I used a little root hormone on, as a test. I hope the pieces aren't too small to root.

Wow those are small pieces. Rooting hormone will probably dehydrate cuttings this small. These are really tiny!

They should root. I used to think anything under 6 inches wasn't worth the effort (that's what she said).
But lately I've seen pictures here, and even witnessed it myself with some of mine. One inch pieces pupping and taking root.
Just don't leave them in direct sun until they have roots, you don't need the rooting hormone but it won't hurt.

In case you aren't aware, be sure to keep them dry until they root. Watering an unrooted cutting can rot cacti cuttings.

It is hit or miss, some will root, some will just dry into yellow rocks.

Finally got a pup on one of my Pedro pieces. The other chunks are starting to swell up a bit, we'll see what else pops.

I'm not sure about your climate, but watering every 2-5 days seems like way too much. My peruvian torch is in direct sun with 90+ degree heat and I water it at most every week. Good luck with your plants.

from what ive been experimenting with seems like this really all depends on the soil mix you use, i have one seedling in a super high perlite mix that gets watered every 3 days, and is currently my fastest growing seedling. would also change based on how large the plant is in relation to soil volume i would think. plants in ground being able to extend much deeper would need far far less water as it can naturally reach deeper into cooler soil that stores more water
new to cacti myself so i have no real idea what im doing, when it comes to cacti im just parroting and going off very limited experience, but so far to me this seems to work just like other plants, compensation for evaporation and cellular transpiration and whatnot, just a lot slower.
