Wow this thread is great. I have been having issues with my salvia lately. I can't get them to thrive. The lower leaves tend to start to turn brown then they fall off. Even when I seem to be getting nice growth. I am using a CFL. How far away should it be? Here is a picture, any ideas?

Thanks

Is that a web I see running from the top right leaf to the dying bottom right leaf? You don't by chance have mites do you?

How many other plants do you have? Are they all doing the same thing? Are they all the same age/size as that plant?

I have two pretty large plants and two small ones that are much less healthy than the one pictured. The large ones essentially now only have leaves on the very top. The rest have fallen off.

Its a spider web, not from mites, although I did have mites at one point. I left the spiders in there because I figured they would eat any pests and wouldn't harm the plant.

Yeah, I would say spiders are definitely fine.

What kind of humidity are you in? I don't do anything at all to control/maintain humidity for mine, but I am in a pretty humid area already. What's your watering schedule like?

Also, is this something that just randomly started happening all of a sudden, or is this something that you have always struggled with?

Its pretty arid here. I don't really pay attention to the actual numbers. I might throw my RH meter in my grow area and I could give you a number.

I water when the pot feels pretty light or mostly dry to the touch. I don't like to let them dry out a ton or they will start dropping leaves real quick.

I don't think I have struggled with it as bad as this. I had troubles, turned them around, and now they are back. It is much more arid than usual right now. Haven't gotten rain in forever. Maybe they did better in the spring because of higher humidity?

I just repotted it and one other small one. Maybe that will help.

Pretty sure I am pest free now. Hopefully the new soil wont introduce more pests. I pasteurized soil in the past because of it. I almost wondered if killing off microbes could have happened and could be part of the issue?

Every time I think I have salvia figured out, she does this to me.

You think there is just not enough humidity? The leaves always turn brown like that, its just a matter of time. So I end up with tall plant that has only a few sets of leaves at the very top...

Humidity sounds like the most likely thing to me.

I don't control humidity with mine either like cRm but min are big and established and Oregon is pretty humid anyways

With smaller plants though it really helps, and in drier places is downright necessary for their survival.

The Mexican cloud forests they are native to are very humid constantly I would imagine.

They were probably used to the humidity you had earlier in the year and it sounds like they are suffering from the drop in moisture levels in the air now...

The plant seems to have two types of leaves. The flatter looking leaves grow in lower humidity levels and the more crinkly looking leaves thrive in higher humidities. I have seen the plant shed one type of leaf and start to grow the other type when the humidity changes with the seasons.

Your pictures looks like the humid type of leaf. Look at my pictures, they are the humid type of leaves. I have had great luck with starting plants in the mushroom sfc (shotgun fruiting chamber). Build a big one and see how your plants like living in that environment. If you provide too much light the leaves will show a browning of the veins. The sfc seems to be an ideal environment with high humidity and a good exchange of air. Fanning the air once a day helps and maybe breathe some CO2 into the chamber.. Right now my plants are thriving outside because it is hot and humid.

The plants like acidic water. I killed my first plants with poor drainage soil and high ph water. Luckily my raw well water has a ph of 6.3 or so and my plants seem to love that.

I spray the leaves a few times a day as well.

What is your humidity level?

Get a couple thin saucer pans and fill them with water. Keep the plants around the pans but not in them. When the room is warm enough for evaporation the humidity, albeit in a small area, will be higher than the surrounding area.

As for CFLs. I have 4 plants under a single 85w 5000k bulb. The one closer to and directly underneath is thriving. The other 3, not so much.

How long has that cutting been in that cup? It could possibly be root bound. I had 3 cuttings in solo cups for about 3 months, maybe more and had very little new growth until I put them into a 1 gallon pot. They need to be reported again too because growth has slowed down a lot.

Salvia doesn't respond well to sudden changes in environment. I think humidity is one of the most important factors in acclimation. Slow, gradual changes are easier on her. Make sure there is enough air exchange in there or the humidity may be too much all at once.

My plants seem to do OK up to 95F (35C) in the shade. I do mist and water them a bit more in those temps. They are in bigger pots and have more roots to pull up more moisture than you have.
