what can i expect?

so ive been a heavy drinker off and on for years now, maybe 10 years.
well a few weeks ago i took a look in the mirror and i looked horrible. red skin, heavy eye lids, bags under my eyes, and puffy as shit.
i decided to change it and do something about it, but i dont know if its enough so i figure i could bring up here in hopes of someone actually knowing their shit.
starting this monday i started running in the morning and continue to every other day. im not sure of the distance, but i run for a good 10 maybe 15 minutes. as of now i stop for breaks 5 times.
when i get back from running i lift weights. well a weight. a 20lb dumbbell.
i do 5 dif lifts with the 1 db.
curls
wood chop
not sure what its called, but i put one hand on a chair and lift the db from bottom to top, up down...
another one is where i grip the db with both hand and place it behind my head and life it up and down from upper back to head
gauntlet squat? i grip with both hands, hold the db in the center of my chest and then squat up and down.
i do 3 reps of 15 each.
ive also been eating some what healthier. ive been cutting out all the microwaved shit and i try to eat healthy in the morning. a bowl of cereal and a banana or some other fruit.
i take a multivitamin and a b complex daily after i eat.
another thing ive cut out is gatorade. i drink kratom every day and i usually mix that into a 32 oz gatorade which means i was drinking gatorade at least 25 times a month. i saw it had a shit load of sugar and sodium so now i use a pre made green tea with ginseng, the 0 calorie one.
sorry for the rambling. i really high from the kratom right now, but if i keep all this up could i expect to see noticeable differences or should i be pushing myself harder?
im going to stop mumbling now. i think ive some what made my point.

You can expect that you will have problems with your essential organs if you continue heavy drinking.
I quit drinking to get drunk a couple weeks (maybe a month?) ago, I still have beer but I'm able to keep it at 1-2 because otherwise I get headaches now because of the medication I'm on.
Anyways when I quit drinking I lost 10-20lbs in 2 weeks and it stayed off. I'm eating ice cream like every day now and I hardly gain anything, it's great.
Kratom slows down your metabolism I'm pretty sure, so if you're primary focus is health I would keep it to an absolute minimum. Better than drinking for sure tho.
Also don't push yourself too hard. That is the #1 mistake people make when exercising. Slow and steady wins the race. Make proper form your top priority, develop a routiene that you enjoy, and the rest will just happen. Don't depend on results to motivate you, because if you don't love the exercise you'll never make a lifestyle of it, it will always be a struggle.

What medication are you on? you don't have to answer.
I would love to be able to keep my drinking that minimal, but inevitably it always snowballs back to like a bottle of wine a day.
When I quit drinking for 3 months last year I lost 10 lbs w/o changing my diet or exercising. That alone should be enough to get me to stop, but I can't.
Alcohol is so lame.

man, i just read through my OP. what a formed pile of shit. its almost as if i let an 8 year old listen to me talk and then type it out.
anyway, thanks for the input.
i notice whenever i stop drinking my sugar cravings shoot through the roof as well. i guess its because beers have high amounts of sugar and once you cut it out your body looks for other sources of sugar.
youre right about the weight too. beer packs on so much shit. tomorrow will be the 2 week mark with no alcohol and im already noticing a difference in weight. im sure the running and exercise is contributing to the loss as well, but im pretty sure i will still see a dif even if i wasnt working out.
i can say that i am happy with my routine. its not much, but it helps keep me in line, stay fit, and keep from living a lazy day. shit, this morning was the 4th time i ran and i was able break 4 times instead of 6. the very first time it took me 15 minutes and 6 breaks to run to the end and back. now it takes me 12 minutes and 4 breaks and i started running this past tues.
anyhoo. thanks again for the reply.

im not on any sort of medication right now. i guess the only things i am taking is kratom, caffeine pills, multivitamins, b complex, and melatonin at night.
dude, im exactly the same way. i can stop drinking, but if i start up again, its over. i am getting better though even if i do start drinking again. last year i was drinking at least 3 bottles of jim a week. it was horrible. its hard to see the effects alcohol has on you while youre drunk or hungover. the shit is such a nasty drug, with shitty shitty effects and results, but its so readily available and cheap its hard not to drink.

Suboxone (burenorphine) for opioid addiction. Not exactly an ideal situation, but for right now I am able to live a healthy lifestyle and am getting my life on track. I also got reinfected with Lyme disease this summer and I think that had a big impact on my appetite for a while. I couldn't even really afford to lose any more weight than I did, and it wasn't intentional, my doctor actually prescribed me Marinol (synthetic THC) for it.
It sucks because every time I try and stop taking it I definitely have more of a thirst for liquor, but I'm at the point where I've stopped drinking to cope with anxiety and emotional stuff. It just makes that worse. Last time I got clean I think alcohol played a big part in me relapsing, but I'm more aware now so hopefully that won't happen again. It's definitely not good, but I also love beer so I hope I can keep it in line.

Don't they make a pill that makes alcoholics really sick if they drink?
I wouldn't want to go that route, but sometimes I wonder!

Yeah I think they do, but those things tend to have weird side effects I think. I know they prescribe chantix for alcohol and smoking, but that seems kinda creepy to me for some reason, and I'm not sure if that's the one that makes people sick.
I pretty much find the easiest way to not over indulge is to stay in alot do other things to help relax, mainly exercise. I went from drinking like 5-10 drinks per day to maybe five drinks in a week. I'm getting shit done and feeling better than ever. I started doing it because the headaches and hangovers were so bad, but the less I drink the better I feel.
My problem is when I get off the suboxone I think I get crazy. I want to get off it badly but I gotta figure it is better than alcohol, and if I can't get out of bed and function what's the point of being sober?

I'm day 2 alcohol free.
I believe my prayers have finally been answered, as someone came into my life rather serendipitously yesterday willing to support 100% my intention to get sober. It's scary but it feels good to have this support net and new sense of accountability.
I am going to have to make some hard changes, but ultimately I know it will be worth it because I am SO done spinning my wheels.
Thanks for the inspiration guys

Good for you!!
Not that you're asking for it, but I will offer my humble advice, which is to simply STAY BUSY. If you're even half as compulsive as I am (and as most drinkers I know tend to be), then you will still probably have an intense sort of restlessness within you, especially now that you're sober. If you can channel that energy into something productive, ideally something that you're passionate about, then this will help you immensely. This has been so essential to my sobriety so far, along with being consciously grateful for things that I'd otherwise forgotten about when drunk.
That's nice that you have someone to support you in this change as well. Most all of my friends are drunks, and I had to pretty much cut all of them out of my life after awhile. I have literally one friend who is sober, and he's been clean for about 6 years. He's awesome as fuck, and having him as an ally has been invaluable to me.
Enjoy your new life

Thank you!!
I am learning even more about triggers and cravings this time around.
I think it's going to be helpful to schedule work-outs for the evening. I prefer to exercise early in the day, but I'm realizing that exercising to the point of tiring myself out at night really helps on multiples levels: keeps me busy and away from the house where I normally am at those hours and experiencing cravings.
I'm gonna make a list of all the things I am usually doing when I drink to help see how, when, where I can make even more changes.
I want to be posting in this thread a year from now telling you that I am over a year alcohol free.

Yeah go to the doctor if you're really not sleeping, or just start getting up early and don't spend all night dicking around on the internet.
Alcohol is an awful way to self medicate for insomnia. I'm not exactly sure what your goals are here, but you should read over what you wrote here before and try to remind yourself of what is really important and not puss out when things start to get tough. Stay focused. If you work at it and put actual time in trying to develop a healthy routine you will feel better in the long term.
Nice work tho.

Yeah that sucks. I am always compelled to drink while withdrawing, but I always regret it. I'ts a shitty sleep and makes me feel bad enough upon waking that I have a really hard time keeping my priorities straight. I'd worry you're headed for trouble because now your use is having an impact in your life and you're kinda dragging your feet not really even fully confronting the problem, which you're entitled to do, but that's not the way to move forward. That's a good way to get stuck in this cycle for years on end and most likely allow things to escalate.
You would do yourself a huge favor if you kept it in mind the long-term consequences of your actions and not give in to momentary pleasure that really isn't even that pleasurable. Put in the work, then you will feel better, but only to an extent. Without some larger idea about what you want out of life it can be really hard to get through the rough parts, so even if you slip try to stay focused and always be thinking about improving. Putting that out of your mind for one night to get a break often sets you back more than you expect.

honestly, its clouded. my triggers are really small and once i get it in my head, its over. however, i did not drink last night. instead, i drank a whole box of yogi tea, about 6 bags of sleepy time tea with valarian root, some ib profen, and melatonin. this probably wasnt the healthiest route, but it worked.

hmm well I enjoy K more than drinking.. I used it to quit drinking because I decided I liked K more than alcohol and combining the two is really bad for your organs, particularly your liver. After I stopped craving alcohol, I slowly tapered off of the K.. it was easier than trying to quit drinking cold turkey because the K addiction is solely psychological. although Im not necessarily recommending it, in fact I would actually recommend against it because it will feel much better to rid yourself of alcohol without relying on other substances to do it.

For example one of mine is right after a good yoga session.

I guess its a difficult question to answer because I was a generally unhappy person before I discovered drugs & alcohol. My home life was shitty and I was depressed all of the time and pretty much all I did was play video games constantly -- arguably just as unhealthy as bingeing on drugs. Drugs & alcohol made me start to enjoy and appreciate life in a manner I previously didn't. Although I must admit, as time goes on, I find myself feeling down when I feel like I cant feel good without drugs. This ultimately has led me to start exploring other avenues of endorphin production, such as playing music, making art, or rock climbing. And of course, drinking Slurm.

ive had real kava before and it was actually pretty damn good, but the process in making it is a pain in the ass. the yogi kava tea bags have kava in it, but a small amount. i usually make a drink using 8 tea bags, water, and some milk. ill get the liquid up to just under boiling and then let the bags sit for a good 30 minutes. i also agitate the bags every so often. mixing the kava drink with the sleepy time mix makes for a great relaxing feeling. i mean, you dont get fucked up, but you def notice a pleasant difference.
