Cactus base question

Baker Bridge, it's been in the ground for awhile.. Does this look normal? It's not squishy and the tip is still growing as far as I can tell. You ever see the base go this color? I've only seen tan that I can recall..

I had one looking like that, wasn't sure if it'd last so I went ahead and cut it.
Typically a little black spot is nothing to worry about, but the outer layer of the base was peeling off and some of the insides appeared to have rotted away.
But if I hadn't have been repotting, I would've never known. As you said, the tip was still looking great and nothing was squishy.

Pull it from soil, let roots and base dry for a few days

Unless I am missing what you are talking about, it looks normal to me. It looks like mine do where some of the soil gets washed away or moved away from the original soil line and what is exposed on the column is just used to being underground.

Yeah that's what happened, I was watering it and the soil line kind of pulled away from it. Where the green is, is where the soil line was. I never really looked at bases much, but kind of always assumed them to be tan..

Yeah, I kinda went off on a tangent, my bad. There's nothing abnormal about the color, and if it's not squishy you're okay.

Mine get tan/brown under the soil, but I don't think they look that bad. the others who answered have great knowledge. Id still check the roots for peace of mind, but that's my opinion.

The tough, Yellow part of the skin that forms below the soil surface is called Corking. It's normal for this to happen.
The Black I see in your picture is a little worrying though. That's what rot looks like and it tends to do Two things: Eat the entire plant or they just weep and heal up. Watch that spot closely for any changes. If it's rot you'll have to work fast to save some of the plant.
Not saying it's rot, just could be.

I've gone through 3 baker clones.. they just keep rotting on me I think it's too humid where I am. I have a little stump of green from the last one gonna try n root it but not hopeful...
Your's looks good but I'd watch the blackspots & how much water you give it.. Seems to me that this clone is prone to rot....

When you mix your soil, toss it around and let it dry throughout. It might feel dry but still be moist.

Good deal. For the record, I asked a few months back if cacti should be rotated when they catch the majority of their sun on one side. It was recommended that I dont.."they dont rotate in nature"..
That black is on the side that was against the wall, and the others are in fact leaning. So that tells me, yes you should rotate your cacti.
Also, it was just the baker showing that, so maybe they are prone to rot. The eileen, and "acid plant" are just leaning towards the sun, so maybe bakers are sensitive to water.

Not really. All the growers I know, including myself, don't rotate their pots and don't experience that problem. It's likely you got a bridgesii susceptible to rot, as some a notoriously known for, or there's another problem. Soil composition, exposure, environmental....

Nah. They're telling me that they're getting comfortable in their new home. They do lean into the sun, or more often, lean back and then into the sun. After they do this for a while they then shoot straight up and continue upwards. It's just the new repositioning and them adjusting to it.
I wouldn't water it at all for a long time either. Watch it and hopefully it heals. Otherwise chop it up and re root it.

Yeah, I'm done with the watering thing. I've had cuttings sit out of soil for months that were fine, so they may be getting a "dry season" here for awhile. I may get a syringe and just 'spot water' this baker from now on. It's got good roots so a few ccs here and there on the outside of the pot should suffice.
About the lean, I just noticed, .. check it out, it got it's lean on but up there at the very top it is curving back to straight up it looks like.
