So what are you doing with yours?
I absolutely adore mine, using it with rasplex and an ir dongle programmed to my logitech harmony one.... it runs so smooth, everything is direct playback, no transcoding... i've tried roku, hacked apple tv, and various google boxes and this is sheer perfection..... runs smooth as butter
RPi2 ftw

no. plex on pi, it's front end for plex on your server to play virtually any file format back to you, and it also scrapes them for metadata so you have box art, imdb info, ,etc....
roku and many media pcs in a box do offer plex, but they generally suck, don't support all the file formats, and force the plex server to transcode on the fly.
the pi kicks ass, movies immediately start, i can quickly ff and rewind etc.

I've been toying with this for a minute. It's on the todo, specially since there are HiFi audio boards easily available to spew that digital goodness straight to my smogishborg active DSP loudspeaker system.
WAhoooo for hackery!!!

I was just checking them out again today when I ordered my Raspi2.
There's actually a number of different DAC's available. 2 straight plug in play comercial options and more with some form of DIY involvement.
I didn't order the DAC as I think ultimately I'm going to send it over to my active DSP via I2C and never do a conversion in the first place.
So FLAC or other hifi audio format on the Raspi -> DSP and never do a conversion until it hits the amp to the individual speaker drivers. About the best chain you can get. I'll impliment a volume control on the DSP, that I could likely tie into a serial line on the Raspi2. The hardware is there at least, I don't know abou tthe software/kernel support as I've never really developed for linux or raspi, but hey. first for everything eh?
:-)
Using the analog devices ADUA1701 DSP on the FreeDSP design BTW.

I've got one I'm currently using as a sandbox server for a website I'm (slowly) working on.. It's perfect as it more than meets my h/w requirements and it barely uses any power or gets hot.
But after reading about some of the cool shit you can do with 'em... I wouldn't mind another .

I bet I could get away with running a server on a second pi, i mean right now i have a mac mini i5 w/ 8gb of ram and 8tb of external storage
mostly i just use it as a plex server and znc bouncer, small teamspeak server, all sorts of little odds and ends, i used to be way more invested into itunes and had to downloa only h264 tiltes and remux them or the dreaded transcode from xvid.... things are far simpler these days

I've got a raspberry pi 1 and 2. I keep meaning to load RetroPi, so I can have multiple emulators and games at my finger tips. I am also going to get a couple of USB controllers for each console.

ah that sounds great, would like something like that to be an extension of rasxbmc, yanno, play your games and then go back command central to watch your films

I have a RPi B+ that I use as a small home server. I have Raspbian installed to a usb flash drive and 3 x 1tb hdd storing my data. Its running minidlna, apache, samba, and a few other small apps. My only complaint is the lack of gigabit Ethernet and that is also why I haven't bothered to upgrade to RPi 2.
I have a few laptops around the house loaded with kodi hooked up to the tv in that room. Honestly I rarely even stream anything saved on my pi, it's mostly used for when I need access to my data while I'm on the go. I set up a ddns and basically use apache as an ftp server I can access from any web browser.
It's great for when I'm on the bus and want a book to read, I have thousands of ebooks saved, oh and music too, it will play right through the browser, I just wish I could get movies to do the same, I can only download them from the server at this point.
I played around with retropie and raspbmc for a bit, but on a B+ you are very limited. Only older games worked for me and xbmc lagged to much to make it enjoyable. Don't get me wrong, I love super mario and sonic the hedgehog and xbmc... But for all the trouble retropie and xbmc caused me it was way easier to just install the emulators kodi on the computers plugged into the tv... took care of that lag problem

It's just a very cheap $45 low powered computer that's fanless (great for htpc, it makes no noise)... a microsd card functions as the OS storage, I think a 2gb will fit rasplex or rasxbmc nicely..... hdmi out included, you need to buy an ir remote w/ blaster, i bought one that took forever to send from china but was fully able to program it with my harmony remote so plex runs like a breeze, anyways, endless other things can be done with a raspberry pi 2, just google that and "makers"

They're only supposed to be $35 for the RPi 2 and the older models should be cheaper. IMO, there are much better boards for htpc, though not as cheap. RPi were meant to introduce children to programming, a low cost solution. Most adults have laptops and desktops if they want to learn to program, the main draw for an adult using a RPi are the GPIO built in and the small size. I have a brickpi expansion board for running lego motors for making robots, the only reason it can work is because it connects to the RPi's GPIO. We don't have any of the motors the brick pi needs so I've yet to play with it...
RPi was meant to be a project board, to make something out of it, a robot, a 3d printer, a drone, a bunch of them can be turned into a cluster, there are many things they can be used for. I see RPi as a stepping stone, I've recently been looking into other boards, Odroid mainly.
I"m looking for something the is very slim but powerful, no Ethernet or stacked usb ports or usb ports mounted perpendicular to the board... I want something I can build a rugged water proof linux tablet out of, I've been wanting a linux tablet for a while. I've got a long way to go and its low on my list of priorities, once I find a board I like then I have to find somewhere that does 3d printing and work on prototyping a case to hold the board and screen.
I want something powerful enough I'm not mad I spent the time and money on... It's hard to find something slim and powerful, I'll probably end up finding a board that's powerful enough, but will have to strip stuff off of it to make it fit...

I love Rasp Pi, Arduino, Beagle Bone and many other Dev boards; I wish I could have more than I do. They traversed creativity in people who would likely never would have done so using traditional E.E/MCU development methods. It's so great to see the innovations in technology stemming from low cost, easy to learn open source MCU boards sharing code and designs on an international level.
I wish I was able to pick up a Pi; I have wanted one for some time now. I broke the bank picking up Art of Electronics's 3rd edition. I ended up with two copies cause I tore the Amazon Store a new asshole, as they shipped an expensive and internationally cherished text in an envelope intended to mail a few sheets of paper.
Arduino's simplicity, wide rage of functions from the physical model revived my interest in electronics & programming. My previous enthusiasm was limited to software; this was incredible foolish as I spent so much time and money on a CS degree during the ignorance of my youth. I have several Arduino boards that can be used for countless creations; however my desire for Pi is based on my love for Linux, and so many IO port types, sufficient Ram, (CPU, GPU power) all for a great price.
40 GPIO pins Ethernet port 4 USB ports Full HDMI port Ethernet port Combined 3.5mm audio jack and composite video Camera interface (CSI) Display interface (DSI) 'Used to connect Standard LCD or Touch Screen' Micro SD Card Slot
And it's Packing: VideoCore IV 3D graphics core 900MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU 1GB RAM
I have created or expanded many projects; mostly Arduino. Currently I’m reviewing various MCU chips specs to automate a mini green house, record data, trigger alerts and override sensor controls. My G.H. project is still in the paper phase so there is not much to share.
Also I have seen many new mycologists interested to incorporate automation technology; please take extreme caution when mixing electricity and water connection; especially when connection to your main lines. A qualified electrician should make sure your line and receptacle can handle the load and environmental factors.
So what would I use my Pi 2 B+ for? Most likely I would be interested in using it as a networked remote control and display interface to tied in various automated projects. The first thing I would do is run various Linux Distros on it. I can't stand Microsoft, I have only used Linux at home for the past decade; with the exception for the past week I've been using a loner laptop; I feel naked exposed and extremely vulnerable.

Finally got to doing this OP, its really impressive. Had to flash with win32 disk imager for some reason
I was really trying to get it with the console commands but wasn't having it. Missing commands or something thanks though thats a really good set up!
I was messing around with mediatomb before this it worked on our smart tv we had here. So i can still run that. Oh and I had arch arm on another sd card - its always fun toying maybe should try it with slackware discover new things too hehe

Nice, arch and slack give nice clean installs without the bloat, just what ya want.... Two of my favorite distros, I use Arch it is just a little lazier imho heh
