that spot looks good. the one above it i think looks suspect though. sometimes its hard to tell in the beginning and your mix seems to have some spots of clumpy brf which can also look a little odd in the pics.
when you make the substrate try to really mix it well with a fork so its all uniform

well if its cube mycelium it will eventually start looking like that other one you have. it will thicken up kinda. i mean it may still just be the picture i dont know some people seem to think its fine and maybe it is.
if it starts to turn any other colors or if it grows real fast and is more grey than white you will know its bad.

Is it ok to take the lid off and smell them? If so what would a normal jar smell like and what would a contaminated one smell like?

i wouldnt advise in opening, i noticed trich in my dry verm layer, opened it up and scooped what i thought was it and today more appeared in the dry verm. dont open unless ur willing to sacrifice it. i figured it just one jar so i can afford the loss.

I really don't advise on opening. You can try to smell through your injection holes.. Whatever's there will stay there though, dry verm layer will hold it in. I always smell when I'm birthing or spawning. Because like said before.. once you open it, it's done.

You do not want to try LC with a spore print. You want to put spores to agar, clean up the culture, then put that into an LC so that you're not dropping bacteria and mold spores in sugar water.

No, so far no contams. My last grow was with 2 pint sized ziplock tubs and I did the same open air style inoculation and had a fairly successful yield with no contams.

It's best to draw the LC with a syringe but you shouldn't ever inoculate LC with a syringe of anything, except maybe other verified clean LC.
Never put spores from a print, syringe, or otherwise into LC if you can help it. If you can't help it and do it anyway then you'll probably come to understand why that's not recommended.
