Air conditioner malfunctioned, came back to find the dog dead.
Quote:
A police dog died after being dispatched to patrol the grounds of the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin on Wednesday, the Green Bay Press Gazette reported. Wix, a 3-year-old male Belgian Malinois, had been working with the Brown County Sheriff’s Office since April of last year.

The cause of death is still being investigated, but a likely culprit is an air conditioning unit that malfunctioned while Wix was waiting in a patrol car. The lower motor that pushes the air supply is the component that failed, according to the sheriff’s office, which held a press conference on Thursday afternoon about the incident.

The sheriff’s office said Wix’s partner, Deputy Austin Lemberger, checked on Wix in the morning, but when he later came back at around 12:30 p.m. CT, Wix was non-responsive in the back of the vehicle. That’s when the officer discovered the vehicle’s air conditioning unit wasn’t working properly and that the K-9 heat alarm had also failed, the sheriff’s office said, noting the alarm presented a second mechanical failure that is currently being investigated.
It is unclear how hot Lemberger’s patrol car got.
“Wix was a valuable member of this agency and community and will be sadly missed by all,” read a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. “Our thoughts are with Deputy Lemberger while he copes with the loss of his K-9 partner.”
A representative of the sheriff’s office on Thursday likened Lemberger’s grief to losing a family member.
Wix, one of five K-9 Unit dogs on the force, was an expert at tracking and explosives detection.

none of the other dogs who get deliberately killed have a choice either.
theres no uproar every time one of them dies
plus, these dogs are used maliciously. so yes, i would say i'd rather a police dog die than a regular old pet dog

That's what I am curious about... I thought they were talking about passing a law that made it illegal to leave an animal (or child) in a hot car

Likely doubtful, if it is chalked up to the air conditioner failing.
Another site covering the story mentions a different case though:
Quote:
Wix is not the first police dog to die in a car this summer. A sheriff’s deputy in Texas was fired this week after his police dog died after being left in a car for 20 hours.
Two police dogs in Georgia died in hot cars in June. There also have been deaths of police dogs this summer in California and southern Alabama. In the California case, a 3-year-old Belgian shepherd named Nitro died because an air-conditioning unit failed, according to the Stockton Police Department’s Facebook page.

So it seems it is not unheard of for them to be punished, if it is shown to be negligence rather than accident.

around here cops leave the car running, even if they are having a two hour lunch.
bummer for the pups, they are just being used like any other "tool" in the hands of the pig.

Cop should be charged with manslaughter against another police officer. O well though, one less monstrosity to search my car.
I'm the biggest dog lover there is, and while this pisses me off i have to say these police k9's aren't even dogs anymore. They lose all the characteristics that makes a dog a dog, the instant they get their own badge, and get to maul people who have to sit there and take it, while the dog has no clue.what it's doing.

they're still dogs and experience emotions as well. just because a dog has been mistreated or trained doesn't make it any less of a dog. /facedesk

angel or demon would imply the dog had some sort of moral decision making going on. i highly doubt the dogs had any of those man-created ideas running though their heads.

What I meant was, that if it didn't die in that car, it would've gone on to bite the flesh off some poor fools. I feel bad for the dog don't get me wrong, but.. It was expendable..
