What are your criteria for upper class (the rich), middle class, and the lower/working class?
    #22085845 - 08/13/15 10:31 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I think I sort of know what constitutes the poor/working/lower class.  Basically they earn wages by working for someone else and their combined earnings (husband and wife in a family) do not exceed a certain amount.  The middle class are also wage earners although they make X amounts, which are more than those of the lower class.

The rich are the ones who have income coming in but they don't have to work.  They own capitals and means of production and these bring in income for them.

What do you guys think of my criteria?  do you have anything to add yourself?

CEOs, entrepreneurs, athletes, etc. can be rich and still work.

Ah yes...I thought my criteria were lacking in some way, I just couldn't put my finger on it.

Middle class is comfortable, often own their own home, have a steady income that allows luxuries beyond basic luxuries that we take for granted. I'd say off hand that an income over 30k and or a net worth of 200k puts you in middle class but that is not set in stone. Many making more than that are dirt poor because of no money management skills. We hear about lottery winners who are broke soon after they get the loot. Mike Jackson made up to $100M a year but died broke and in debt

Upper class might start at income of 100k or more and/or net worth of $1M or more but that too is slippery. Then you have the truly rich with many millions, then the uber rich with hundreds of millions, then the billionaires.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

You generally want to go with income classes, but it depends where you live. 30 something thousand could be fine in some rural places, but could be a disaster in a desirable city. In those places 100,000 could leave you struggling.

There is always a maybe desirable strategy of living where income is low and working where it is high. This can work if you have the right skills and don't live someplace too dangerous. This works better if you don't have children.
