ıııııııııııı Official Nordic / Baltic Psilocybe semilanceata Season 2015 ııııııııııı 1

Even if it is still summer (or rather, finally, as the greater part of June and July this year has been extraordinarily un-summery) the liberty caps have since the last two or three weeks started popping in my region. Have been checking a bit and picked a mere hundred specimens so far. Went out this morning, and I witnessed a good haul of them in a public lawn being chewed up by a lawnmower before I could get to them!

A couple however had the wits to hide themselves from the grinding teeth of the mower - but not from me:

Out of the public spaces and into the farmland is where it's obviously at:

So it has started! Please pour your pictures into this thread, hoping for a healthy season!

This is when you should do this I know the feeling man. Last year i was 30 minutes late to my bluing conocybes. When I got there the farmer was a mowing.
I found my first libs last week beside a couple of paths in the forest (a habitat I learned is good for early finds).

Yeah, the forest libs are always first to show. This is the same habitat (you can actually see some libs in the Deschampsia grass) here:

You should keep some of them for microscopy. I'm not entirely convinced they are P. semilanceata, but maybe a different Psilocybe sp.

I'm also leaning towards something new/undescribed, very close species to P. semilanceata that you got in Estonia and Finland, or at least a strain that has adapted well to low grass-containing substrates. Check out these mushrooms found in Finland a few years ago: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/usergallery.php/gallery/145952/imgpp/all/folder/Psilocybe+from+Finland+%28not+mine%29
The habitat is not suited for P. semilanceata, the substrate have too much leaf and twigs and hardly any grass. There shouldn't be clusters forming like that.
Perhaps yours is somehow related, however your habitat have more grass.

It's the mystery Panaeolus.
I find this Panaeolus species distinctively different from the "normal" P. papilionaceus (second group from the right) because it a chocolate brown color (not gray) and never have the saw toothed veil remnant around the cap margin on young mushrooms. I think is has to do with the old P. spinchtrinus, P. retirugis, P. campanulatus, P. papilionacues becoming just P. papilionacues. My plan is to collect them this year and send to Alan or someone, but I forgot to bring them home this time. I have a feeling that DNA analysis of them will break up P. papilionaceus into separate species again.

I'm not sure what they are either. I'm certain they are not Panaeolus papilionaceus

Looks very similar, yes. Could probably be the same species.
And if it's acuminatus, what's the almost black Panaeolus appearing at the end of the season? :

I find this to be the most intriguing picture. The stems are off, the caps unusual for liberty caps. I'd like you to dig up some of the substrate to check what it actually consists of. Close up shots of stem and stem-base would be interesting.
Yes boss, i'll do what you want At the weekend, i'm going to take better pictures. i'm very excited
Yep I would probably just pass them by if I saw them , especially in this habitat. Kind of makes me wonder how much I have left behind ....

What the Panaeolus on the right in this picture? Awesome pictures!
I'd call that P. acuminatus. Usually brown, no visible veil remnants on the cap margin, rather straight and firm stem, slender stature. I've never knowingly encountered P. fimicola, although I think maybe some of my suspected P. cinctulus finds might have been P. fimicola.
And yes, very nice pictures Knarkkorven!
I can't match those but in any case my area has finally started to pick up, about a month late compared to "normal".
Found a few (roughly 100) this morning:

yeah, and a lot of time, but it was worth every minute. I got some brilliant photos now.
I went back to the log every time I got a hand full. I didn't think I would find so many, in the end the bottom rows were so close to the edge that mushrooms was falling off.

Went out this morning, and I witnessed a good haul of them in a public lawn being chewed up by a lawnmower before I could get to them!

A couple however had the wits to hide themselves from the grinding teeth of the mower - but not from me:

Well, it has been unusually weird this season, seems the whole summer was postponed with about a month. Just as the little ones started to pop in early August, it became hot and dry for almost four consecutive weeks, resulting in an abrupt stop in fruiting. Not until now have they started showing up again, except for the odd one out here and there.
I'm still spending most of my outdoor time trying to find Boletes, and they also are showing up unusually late.
But a trip out in the fields will happen this week, I'm sure.

PS. Funny how this particular field fruits so many sterile libs. Many are white beneath the cap.

Nowhere near your haul, Knarkkorven, but I made a decent picking this morning. Things are turning better in my area.
Most of them were found in a 2-3 year old public lawn. Not too much in the sheep pastures though.

Decent haul, mostly quite large ones.

Ah, nice to see another Norwegian here!
I grew up in the north, Tromsø to be specific. There are some nice spots around there, to be sure.
Went out again this morning to a field I probably got around 2000 from back in 2011, however it didn't yield much the years after that. Seems though to be coming back to life again, I got 82 after a 45 minute staring contest - it was sharp morning sunlight and they were ultra difficult to spot!

And I met two new friends on my way back:

Well, there are only these two grazing with a herd of so-called wild sheep. But there are no predator animals in my parts of Norway, so I doubt that is the reason. I don't think either wolf or bear has been present here since the last 300 years.

Some kind of record for me today. Incredible amounts of libs in this big cow pasture that usually don't produce much even though the habitat are perfect. But this year.. Wow! Every couple of meters, for 7 hours 340g wet. It feels like the double amount of last weekend.

Where has the rain gone in Baltics ?! Although temperature is almost right (5-9 celsius at night, 15 at day).
Any of you have found some, even without proper rain for a week?

Some fatties there, really nice.
Season in my area still seems to be halting, I find some here and some there, but the explosion like we had last year in the end of august seems to tarry a bit, if it comes at all. I keep finding not much more than maybe a hundred or so each time I go out.

@AnglerFish I love those pics of the animals there on page 4. What are those are they llamas?
@knarkkorven My goodness, that is extremely beautiful habitat, not to mention a good haul. Not to mention my roomate is fully Swedish, she moved here a few years back. Her mom flew in from Sweden recently and that was nice. I don't speak the language so things got confusing at points but it looks like I said, extremely beautiful in those pictures!
Keep it up everyone I'm loving the thread so far this year

They are llamas indeed. Only llamas I've seen in my area so far, but they are increasingly popular in Norway. Alpacas too.

Hey all, been a while but I finally got out this year ... rain has been unfortunately minimal but I did manage a couple of hunts and came out with around 70 or so total ... not bad considering most of my spots have been developed by new houses. On the plus side most of mine came from lawns at the edge of former wild fields. It appears they are spreading and shall be safe from new development. Kind of a win I suppose. Tonnes more to be found around Estonia though, just need to find some time and get my Estonian drivers licence
Happy Hunting all you Scandinavian/Baltic hunters!

I can do the Norwegian one, no problem.
Did you actually get those printed?
Anyway, I got a decent haul from one of my secret hotspots, picking about 250 in an hour this morning. Picking in sharp sunlight strains the eyes a bit, but these were all over the place so I would discover new ones all along while picking. It's a bit like getting in a picking trance. I was a bit dizzy when I finally left the spot, which is the size of a football field. I probably covered less than a fifth of it. I'll be back!

Finally had a tiny bit of rain but temps are on and off low with some frost. However I did manage a small haul today in a lawn at the edge of a wild field that hasn't produced this year ... or so I haven't seen.

That's a nice looking handful. Season in my parts has been weird, picked roughly 1400 of them so I'm content though. I know I won't consume more than half of that so the rest will eventually be handed over to friends. For free, of course.
In any case they're still popping since it's been kind of mild here. Planning a last (?) hunt this coming weekend. Will try to contribute to the thread with a few pictures as well. If I get lucky, that is...

Nice photos ... yeah not sure how many more hunts I'll get in before the heavy frosts set in. Last hunt yielded only 4. Now the rain has come though so a few more may sprout up - but I'm getting busier with work. Hope to get at least one more hunt in.

Hey Anglerfish ... did you make it out on another hunt? Any success, despite the rainy conditions here in Tallinn at the moment I only managed to find about 5 in the last week.
