Is it okay to use denatured alcohol for sanitizing purposes instead of isopropyl alcohol?

It seems like it is a tad bit cheaper to buy. My gut feeling is that it would work fine, since it is just alcohol with a little methanol added.

I would not use denatured alcohol to SANITIZE as in spray or wipedown because it is TOXIC. I would use denatured alcohol for flame sterilization because it burns clean and blue hot.

Yes, it's a fine replacement for many of your Isopropyl needs.

I usually spray down my SAB with a 15% bleach solution. I use alcohol for wiping anything down that goes into my SAB, such as donor and receiving jars, plastic bags containing agar plates, and the gloves I wear while working. I always assumed alcohol was part of good sterile technique.

I do this as well, as it wipes clean and doesn't leave any slippery residue on jars.

I've just not used alcohol or gloves for a long time now, and I haven't noticed a difference . I wanted to cut back my waste and expenses, and see if it makes a difference. I just wash my hands with soap and water before working, and that's it. No gloves. Even jars and plates going into the box don't generally get wiped. The pc sterilizes everything, including the scalpel, and the dishes I'm transfering from are getting opened using the pop and slide method in my techniques.
This proves to me, that what matters most is the techniques to be able to never let anything hover over the open media. Even if you doused your gloved hands in alcohol, if you go over open media, you're pretty much done. That's what a SAB really is about.

do you wash jars kept in open air with soap and water before opening them in SAB? or simply no cleaning of any jars at all before SAB work?

Simply no cleaning lol. I've pretty much halted all sanitizers. Except the occasional alcohol wipe down of tubs.

Haha I'm a mechanic who lives on a farm in an old 70s farm house with horses and 4 dogs. I'm the most unsanitary person I know . Fuck bleach no lie. I can't stand that shit. Also isn't lysol just alcohol? Lol. I'd prefer lysol. At least it smells way better

yea, but it leaves a residue on ur jars/plates/etc that standard alcohol doesn't, so i like it cause i can wipe everything I'm using that session, and then go at it w/o stopping to re wipe what I'm using next.
i use a hood too, so any particles on my hands/gloves can get blown in stream. with an SAB, it makes sense that u can not wipe hands and still have great results!

Yeah if it was a hood, I'd have the entire surface of my work space, and everything that wasn't pc'd wiped down. Also that's a good bit of info to know about lysol. If I get a hood, I'd definitely use lysol now ! Which I am wanting to get since I want to use spawn bags, and work with edibles..

if i didn't suck so bad at doing g2g's in an SAB, i would have waited longer to get a hood, but i was using a 66qt tote for SAB, and it was easy for agar and agar>grain, but sucks balls for g2g IME. seems like people have a better box these days thats taller. not sure why i didn't catch on to that whole deal

Yeah dude exactly! It was you who actually recommended me to get a bigger SAB a few months back I'm glad you did man because I was so fed up with everything. Just moves so much air around.
My 1st sab. I only use this one for printing nowadays.
after you told me to go bigger. 110 qts baby. Still cheaper than a hood eh
