Verm Vs. Perlite

Title pretty much says it all I was wondering what is better vermiculite or perlite? Does it make a difference and why?

They are very different and used for completely different things. If you are doing the PF tek, then you need both.
Perlite is to keep humidity and fresh air exchange working in your fruiting chamber. Vermiculite is for rolling your colonized cakes in as a casing layer.
I assume you are trying to make cakes if you are asking this.

Perlite is used to keep humidity up and vermiculite is used for mushrooms to pin better or something. I've gone with and without vermiculite. Isn't necessary imo

Verm makes a better sub ingredient. Perlite is best for terrarium humidity levels. They are not interchangeable in cultivation. Perlite holds more water and allows for permeability and aeration. Vermiculite tends to retain moisture for longer and is easier for mycelium to root. It also allows for some insulation and aeration but without releasing moisture content as quickly and it makes an excellent barrier against contams. Typically you want finer grain for cultivation. Does that answer your question? :-)

Perlite is used in a sgfc because it utilizes its ability to wick moisture into the air, and it has big air pockets so air can flow up from underneath. Verm is used to fluff up substrates and casings. It's also good at holding water. They're both very different and used for VERY different aspects in this hobby

This is what I've been doing exactly. 1) Colonizing the cake 2) Dunking the cake for 17 to 24 hours 3) Filling a tub a with vermiculite and soaking it's in warm water for 10 minutes 4) Draining the water so the verm is still moist but not too wet 5) Putting casing on the vermiculite 6) putting the cake on the casing 7) adding more casing around the cake.
Am I doing something wrong or where does the whole perlite thing come into play?? I'll post pictures in a second!

It sounds like he doesn't have a sgfc. OP look at
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php hint type sgfc
And mushroom videos terrarium tek.

Lets Grow Mushrooms by RogerRabbit Evil Mushroom's Detailed BRF Tek
Do you have a top for that tub?
Watch those videos up there and they'll show you the process. If you like to read Evil Mushroom's BRF tek is a step-by-step guide.
You're using verm where you should be using perlite. Do you have holes drilled into your tub?
In those videos at part 3 he constructs a proper Shotgun Fruiting Chamber (Or SGFC).

get perlite, dump it in a tote after t=you have drilled holes(1/4inch holes) spaced 2 inches apart on all six sides and put wet perlite on the bottom(like 4 inches of it) verm won't do you any good here

don't forget to elevate that sucker
So Danksikle, looks like you've got a decent cake there, but you need to create an environment which high humidity and a good rate of fresh air exchange to give the mushrooms a place to fruit happily. One of the best, easiest and most efficient way is to create a shot gun fruiting chamber (SGFC) which is a toes with 1/4 holes drilled every 4" on all sides. when you fill this with 4" of wet perlite (shakes off any excess so it does drip out the bottom, it's still plenty wet enough) and elevate it from the floor (4" high would be ok) the air can circulate up through the perlite, get humid enough for the shrooms, and create a circle of air around the SGFC to keep supplying your babies with humidity and air. vermiculite won't be any good for this job as it'll create a sludge in the bottom of your sgfc and no air can circulate. you'll increase your chances of bacteria and other contamiates in this environment. so get a tote, borrow a drill or a soldering iron, and buy some perlite and get the best out of your cake
best of luck
