Adult Chicken Pox?
    #22083119 - 08/12/15 07:42 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Has anyone hear had the chicken pox in their teens or early 20s. I'm in my early 20s and I'm pretty sure I got the chicken pox, but not a single fucking doctor has been able to confirm it. Apparently confirming whether you have the chicken pox is quite difficult and timely, since they have to culture an open blister which can take upwards of 2-3 weeks.

A little more than two weeks ago I started to feel a bad cold coming on. Then the next day, I started to get blisters around my mouth. I thought they were cold sores at first but they spread to my entire face and head. I also have had a small number on my chest and back, but not more than 10-15. I've been vaccinated and I basically feel fine other than some nasal congestion. My main question right now is how long this is gonna last. It's been going on for more than 14 days now, and I'm still getting a small number of new blisters along my jawline.

As I've said, I've talked numerous doctors and none of them can tell me anything. They generally don't seem all that concerned...But I have visible blisters which I'd rather not have. Hoping by the three week mark these things are gone.

Also, do you think it's a bad idea to be vaping weed? I've barely left my house, so I've been using my desktop vape a ton

I never had chickenpox. I got the shot when I was 13.

I find it strange that it is centrelized to your face/mouth region though. I am sure vaping is just fine. Isn't chickenpox supposed to be extremely itchy? Could it be hives?

Yea its itchy as all hell. And it looks exactly like a slightly less bad chicken pox. I thought it was strange that its centralized to my head as well, but I figured thats because I've been vaccinated and I'm on anti-viral, which might be preventing it from spreading further. As I said, I've got some on my chest and back, so its clearly not a cold sore thing, also looks nothing like a cold sore. But alright cool, I was slightly worried that the weed might be suppressing my immune system. It's definitely been getting better, the initial outbreak was horrific. I just really hope this goes away soon

My mom keeps telling me I should get a shot.
I had chicken pox, but I got it when I was maybe a month or two old, and apparently children under 1 year may not stay immune. I hear shingles is a bitch, and I have a weakened immune system right now I'm trying to fix, so I'll probably ask my doctor for it during my next visit.

Also OP, what kind of medications are you on if any at all? That's very very important to know. Have you taken any otc meds leading up to this rash?

for everyone who thinks you can only get shingles if youve never had chicken pox, or been vaccinated, its the opposite.

you can only get shingles if you have already had chicken pox or been vaccinated.

Well, I was on accutane if your familar with it. But I've seen two dermatologists and both are sure that its not some reaction to the medication. The whole thing has presented itself as a viral infection. I started to feel sick before I got this, I also have congestion and my lymph nodes are inflamed which is a symptom of a viral infection. As the blisters have cleared up the lymph nodes have gotten smaller and less inflamed which makes me feel better about the situation

When I was a little kid my brother got chicken pox and I was told it was contagious and to stay away from him but also learned that if you catch it later in life rather than earlier it can be much worse. So I tried touching things he touched and rubbing his toothbrush n shit to catch it and I got the chicken pox a couple days later and have never had them again since

I didn't know there was a vaccine for it, how did you catch them then if vaccinated? apparently it can remain dormant if you've had it before and come up again but idk.

EDIT: maybe shingles is the much worse re-ocurrence of chicken pox later in life thing then

You can still catch it even if vaccinated, its just not as bad. My chicken pox really aren't that bad compared to some pics I've seen, they're just persistent. And if your wondering how I caught it, I went to two music festivals and lived an extremely dirty and unclean life during that time haha. It's honestly not surprising at all that I got sick

Gresh is right, but people who have never had chicken pox or the vaccination can develop chicken pox(not shingles) if they come in contact with someone with it.

Okay, what I'm about to tell you is NOT likely and I do not want to scare you, but Accutane is a medication that can rarely cause Stephen-Johnson's Syndrome. In susceptible individuals even otc drugs like tylenol can cause it with enough time.
Again, it's very unlikely, but it can happen.

I'm also on a medication that can also cause it(and tends to be one of the more common ones that triggers SJS) and have been lectured by my doctor about SJS, it took me months to work up to treatment dosage to ensure I wouldn't get it, etc, etc.
Basically it starts with flu like conditions, evolves into a rash, and eventually blisters and it can get much much MUCH worse if you do not treat it early. People in the end stages of it do die, but the vast majority of patients who get it do  survive, but it gets NASTY, blisters in your mouth, tongue, your skin sheds. And with treatment you'll heal up.

Again, it's very very rare, but it's often mis-diagnosed. I would make another appointment with your doctor or go to an urgent care clinic(rather than the ER) tomorrow, and bring up SJS. A lot of doctors do not recognize it until you start getting blisters in your mouth and you're shedding skin. I had a scare once and freaked out and did a lot of research on it before I found out I was allergic to my make up(hah).

I don't want to freak you out, and it's very unlikely you have it - but it is important you know about it, and it's worth getting checked out for peace of mind.

edit: just realized you said things seemed like they're clearing up. That's good, you should definitely monitor your symptoms and if the rash comes back see a doctor about it sooner rather than later.

exactly. chicken pox is the initial infection, shingles is a resurgence of the same virus

This actually freaked me the fuck out when I first learned about it. I consulted two dermatologists (who know I'm on acccutane) and an ER Doc, both of them told me that it was not SJS. I never had a fever throughout this whole thing. I've also never throughout the past 2+ weeks had blisters on my tongue, facial swelling, hives, or skin pain. Also, these blisters look exactly like chicken pox. I don't know if the SJS blisters evolved, but mine are red with a white dot in the middle, not purple

I'm not sure either, it definitely starts off mild. I was constantly looking up gross pictures of the SJS rash and it didn't really match my own, but the pics of the early onset of it did look a little like it.

I can be a bit of a hypochondriac at times because my immune system is fucked without medication, so I was insanely freaked out, called my parents babbling and crying a little bit about how I had it and that the mortality rate got really high if you don't get it treated promptly - and finally went to my doctor the next day.

If you've had it for two weeks and it hasn't gotten worse I would say you're in the clear, and since everything seems to be improving I'd say you're good, and I think your chicken pox theory is likely. Glad you're aware of SJS, it'll constantly have me on alert for any new medications, but it's better to be overly cautious I guess.

I feel you man, I'm a pretty cautious person as well. I appreciate the concern though. I'm gonna see my dermatologist again in the next few days so I'll discuss with him once more just to make sure I'm good. This whole thing has been a real pain. Overall it never seemed serious, but just the fear of it becoming something like SJS freaked me out
