I'm surprised this thread does not exist yet. Any way I finally cut a few clones and wanted to share.
I soaked the cuttings overnight in a solution of water and non ripe black berry juice. This morning I trimmed them a bit and applied some clone X. I'm very excited hopefully all goes well.
Here are a few pics of the original plants.

Ditto these are everywhere by me. I use to have 3, a Isabelle, a peach and a standard yellow one. My Isabelle hasn't had as red a flowers as when I got it which I'm wondering if it has something to do with my lack of care/fertilizer with them. Same goes for my peach, the colors aren't as vivid any more. Still love the yellow one for the color and SMELL!
Ahh such a lovely smell. Never seen a variegated one though, good find.

The smell is fantastic! The aroma after a hot day; as the temp starts to cool off in the evening, is a fragrance I can only describe as warm peaches.

Ive been germinating some old brug and datura seeds for about 2 weeks, think they are a lost cause or do these guys take time to get going? I know Datura can take forever, and that they are similar plants. Socal, so weather is always nice/shouldnt be the problem.
Thanks

Only speaking for Datura, as I've never had any Brugmansia seeds.
But yeah, they can take a while to germinate. Maybe wait another few weeks or so before you decide to abort.

Wow took almost a month to see roots and I lost two of the three cuttings. Luckily I spotted a few roots and had a successful transplant. In the last two days a few nice leaves have emerged!!! Looks like I got lucky. This has been one of the hardest plants I've ever cloned.
I'm gonna keep it in the rapid rooter for another week maybe. Also if you're wonderin I've kept it at the same light schedule as my veg mj clones.

The hardest? Do you think it's just the variegated one that's giving you difficulty? I thought it was general consensus that Brugs were super easy???

Greatidea for a thread.
My year old brugmansia from cutting. I had to take it back from my mom's house because she wasnt watering it. I water my brugmansia once a day because if I forget the leaves start to wilt.
I haven't seen it flower since last June , when I took it from my moms care. The blooms are yellow.
I've got a white flowered and a pink flowered.. I' really want the double-tripple flowered blooms.
Nice brugmansia hunter hunter -- and signature patch , was that a wild patch you found , looks so good , it mus be a clone ha.

Are brugmansia seeds still viable if harvested a few weeks premature , or did I fuck up the plants future the pod was dark green with a little tad of brown on the top. The species is sanguinea so I really don't want to loose these beauties.

I definitely have pictures up. I think I made a thread called "post your brugmansia" search for it. I live in Canada and winter is coming so all my brugs are really hurting at the moment cuz it's cold and they're going dormant, nothing impressive to see right now.

Bro I think we have a similar cultivar. Your variagation looks very much like mine.
Mine is a Brugmansia sueveolens 'snowbank' Its probably my favourite cultivar.
Sometime in June
Same plant sometime in August
Again in September; 47 flowers!!
A few cuttings
Same big ol plant after her annual winter prune. Too cold outside so shes in the mylar tent under a 600w metal hallide all winter!
FAVOURITE FUCKING PLANT

Zombi3,
That snow bank cultivar is beautiful. Its so awesome knowing of a person to grow something other than cannabis beneath a metal halide. Talk about true love the proof it even exist. You and hunter hunter should see if both your variegated brugmasnias are the same cultivar because if they are different , the chance of a variegated seedling could have a higher ratio.
My brugmansias at my cousin's house are showing teeny weeny flower pods while the B.Versicolor at my grandmas house has a singular flower. I'm actually unsure of the species at my cousin's house so only the flowers will tell. Its either white -or pink.
47 is a lot of flowers for what is that , a 15 gallon container ? I've only fertilized once in my life and that was with my brugmansia. I wish my cousin would let me plant them in the ground but they want fruit trees instead

The brugmansia sanguniea seeds I sowed on 11/17 sprouted while I was away this weekend , so its only been like 10 days , which seems quick for brugmansia. I've got them a heating pad and on 24/7 lights

Very nice plants y'all have! Do you grow them only bc they look so great or also for consuming? I read that it can have pretty mean side effects, is that correct?

I grow them for the visual appeal and the aura they have. You can feel their plant spirit. Go out in the middle of summer under full moonlight and stand beside a brigmansia in full flower. You can hear them singing and see them dancing. Extremely fulfilling plant to grow.

I don't think anyone here is growing them to consume. Way too scary.
I stumbled across a fantastic specimen and was gifted with a few cuttings. Im Just waiting for the beautiful flowers. The coolest plant in my opinion.

Theres a HUGE Brugmansia that grows outside of my Post Office down the road, they recently cut it down to the stumps. Im assuming they do this every year and itll grow back, but when it does I wanna take a cutting to root at home, wheres one of the better places to take a cutting from?

Yea it matters where you cut. Below the branching is considered to be be vegetive growth. And a cutting from above the branching is in flower so. If I understand it correctly the veg growth takes awhile longer to create its branch then it will flower. The cuttings taken from the top will branch and flower sooner. I put a link to a great website.

Nope no coir. Although it could use some!!
It could use more perlite for sure. I started the soil out doors last July. Actually a few years ago it was a cyan bed. All the wood chips decomposed. Then over time coffee grounds were added.
Perlite, black sand, blood meal bone meal, lime, high phos bat guano and regular guano from last years grow added at the correct grow times. Lots of different teas over time mostly ewc, molasses and guano's. Rock phosphate, azomite, feather meal, fish meal, kelp, growth regulators were added last summer made from sprouted corn that Was blended and strained.. I'm probably forgetting a few things. Prolly some verm made it in from spent casings. Lots of spore wash from active edible etc.
The neat thing is you really can't "burn" with organics. I've had sample plants with waay too much blood meal, guano, rock phosphate etc. some stunt then eventually catch up or with different nitrogen's. You get super green yet slightly different in color.
Edit: almost forgot all kinds of compost over a few years for my garden some 16 16 16 several years before I went organic. Some steer manure and when I payed my yard I had a dump truck load of mushroom compost delivered. Years back though.

Damn. Didnt take next to npthing to get thay secret out of you. You would not make it in... Cia, gang, any other secret society situation.
But thanks. Seems like a really great soil. Very rich for some very 'special' situations. Gotta try a brug grow now.

I've noticed a lot of little bugs the last few weeks flying around. Not a lot but I noticed them. My other friends who have mj grows all have gnat strips and fly strips hanging or they use all kinds of spray etc.. The last few days I realized my grow room is naturally regulated by my Brugmansi. Now that it is healthy and has giant leafs all the little flying buggers are dying and accumulating on the leafs!! I had a jumping spider that hung around and it seems to have vanished as well. I just had an idea that I can make an organic bug spray from a concentrated brug leaf concoction. I'm excite!!
Although my feeling is that I don't need the spray because I have a healthy brug in the corner keeping the critters at a minimum. Gonna try some experiments though.

Out of 8 seeds I've only got 2 seedlings pop up. I can't remember if I peeled the outer layer on them or not. I did with some but not others to see what worked. Do you guys have any advice for growing these from seed?

ive studied how to cross breed and create new varieties. However I'm not sure of a proper way to sow them. Let us know what works. Hopefully someone else chimes in. Feels like I'm talking to myself sometimes.
Id imagine a wet paper towel in the cabinet transferred to a nice grow medium kept in a warm environment should work.

Out of the 20 B.Sanguniea seeds planted only 2 survived into seedlings but later died when I wasn't home to mist them.
I sowed in vermiculite/coco/pete/perlite on a heating mat -underneath Fluro bulbs.
Going to try again later today -well maybe not because I should Probually soak them for atleast 12 hours.
I've never germinated anything in the paper towel but many people swear by it when germinating cannabis.
I've got 2 sandwhich bags full of seed from a yellowXwhite brug -let me know if anybody wants some to try.. To grow

Nice is that really a datura? Or is it just mislabeled? I need to post some updated pics. Gonna wait till the lamps turn on at 11 tonight. After flipping the room to bloom 12/12 the brug just shot tons of fat 4 inch plus shoots out all over the trunk. I picked up some cloning supplies, I'm very excited to get a few cuttings!!!!

Past time for an update. Brugs respond and grow similar to mj. I flipped the room to 12/12 with a high pressure sodium. I was worried my baby brug would flower. She is starting to. Not only has benzualaa branched and set a few flowers, but she has shot several giant shoots up from all over. Currently she is about 4-5 inches from the 1k hps. She has taken over my room, my mind and consumes a good part of my life.... she speaks to me! I may be insane.
I had planned on growing her to 6 ft. then flower, but instead she has gone bush style. I'm gonna keep her as a mother plant and utilize alot of the shoots coming off. I'm gonna leave the giant shoots alone however. Very excited.

Looking fantastic hunter!! She's a gorgeous specimen. Do you happen to know the cultivar name? I have a very similarily variegated brug. Mine is a Brugmansia suoveolens 'snowbank'. It's probably my favourite plant. It's going to be 3 years old this summer and it's about 5 feet tall. She looks like ganache right now cuz of the Canadian winter, but she's waking up!!!! I'll post pics soon, if you go back in the thread I'm sure I posted pictures of her most impressive flower set last season in here.
And I concur with what you said about the plant taking up your attention.. I've spent hours just sitting with my brugs on clear nights in the summer. I like to go out during bright moons and smoke a joint and just chill beside them. I swear you can hear them singing and see them dancing in the star light. Absolutely captivating plants. I hope mine lives as long as I do.
I just lost 5 seedlings this winter for a red flowered hybrid. Was pretty devastating to say the least. I babied them all summer just to have them freeze to death in the garage before January.
This year I'm going to grab more seeds and i know a few other growers who id like to go trade brug cuttings with as well. But the size of the mature plants deters me from starting a real collection right now.
Anyway good job man! Awesome plant.

Unfortunately no I don't know the true name. I had mentioned to the botanists that one of the clones had taken root. They were more interested if the variegation had followed through. One made a remark that they "hadn't thought of that". As in taking a clone. Maybe they were joking?? My plan is to take a nicely rooted specimen or two and gift it back to them.
It Would be really neat if I could get some pollen off someone hint hint.
Then I could make some nice seed pods and see what comes out. Yea one problem I see is this fAll when i bring her back inside I will need a completely seperate 1000 watt just for her.
A few questions. Will she stay short and just keep branching and blooming? The side sprouts are just about 3/4 to the top of the main stem. Are those going to outgrow the main stem? Kinda seems like it. After the bloom set should I cut the branch and expect her to grow tall?
I think I messed up and made a bush. I was really going for the 6 foot umbrella shaped tree of flowers. Most likely she is gonna be a bush oh well. I'm gonna keep up on the others and focus on umbrella trees.
As for secrets I avoid phosphorous for the most part in high doses at least. All natural super soil. You can get a basic soil by following sub cools super soil. Also She got a good dose of sst's, aact's and now some experimental fpe's...
Sst sprouted seed (corn, barley, etc) tea AAct actively aerated compost tea. Bat guano, ewc, molasses... Different amounts and types of guano depending on the mj grow period. I've held off of the high phos guano tea at least not a ton.
Fpe fermented plant extract (dandelion, or kelp,or stinging nettle) only gave her the kelp fpe so far
Oh and I've been experimenting and fed her some lacto b ,,, I went a little further and made my style of em1..
Also these plants love to be fed they love being picked and pruned and defoiliated. Also they grow tall and lean under a 1000 watt metal halide. The leaves really get wide and she will get super bushy a week or two after flipping to hps at a 12/12 cycle. Also that seems to signal flower time. I think
Thanks for all the kind comments.
Now for the weird shit.
I was a little faded and really got up in her and Defoliated watered and spent some time with her. As I was sitting there it looked like two eyes were looking at me formed from the stalk. As I stared I could hear a beautiful women's voice with an accent she would say benzzuuellaaa. Hard to type and describe the tone and beautiful accent she had. I know I'm weird. Logically I named her Benzuella. I decided to google the meaning. Closest thing I came up with was Venezuala. Lol. Maybe her thick accent and the fact she is a plant talking to me telepathically made it sound like a b... Anyway maybe she was just telling me where she is from. now I get the feeling she is home sick. I would bet the original genetics are from somewhere in Venezuela. Weirdo I know.

If it's a cultivar you may not be able to get viable seed even with pollen. Brugs can self pollinate can they not? Mine is a cultivar and it doesn't even make seed pods. The flowers just die and they fall off, no pod afterwards. I was under the impression the cultivars can only be propegated by cuttings. Even if you pollinated and seeded it I wouldn't expect the variegation to come through in the seeds.
Why do you avoi phosphorous? Just to limit flowering for now? Or do you keep it low all year?
1000w is a little overkill for such a small plant. Mine is 5 feet tall and it thrives under a 600w MH. Of course given the option I would go with a 1000w also lol! Of course I only keep mine under artificial light in the winter. She loves to be outside in the fresh air!! Last year she had leaves the size of dinner plates!
And yes bro I totally feel you, these plants do feel sentient. I think they like being touched, they definitely like being talked to, and they respond well to being picked up and pruned. I'll give mine hugs every now and again.
I don't think you sound like a weirdo at all, but then again I'm doing all the same plant freak things you're doing so...

I give it a well rounded amendment. I don't boost these with phos because I read this page once. I guess there aren't any scientific reasons given.
Oh yea. I've noticed all my friends with grows even my veg room is full of annoying little gnats. Ha not in my flower room. If any make it in a few hours later the poor buggers are dead and piled up on the brug leaves. I havnt had any bug problems since she has taken over the room.

haha what a coincidence! I went to a garden store today to buy some plants. I found a big brugsmansia one for sale. I picked a leaf, took it home and a friend, aquaintance and I smoked about half all up. Headache, zoning out and slight confusion is all I got with no perceptual change or trippy feelings.. Yes I am well aware this plant is poisonous however smoking it is probably the safest way to consume it.

I eat datura seeds all the time as an anti emetic, sleep aid, dream enhancer, antihistamine, and opiate potentiator. If your careful with your dosing it's extremely effective and very safe. YMMV.

awesome plants, I love those variegated ones. I killed mine pretty efficiently
For those of you growing in MJ room, Brugmansia are nasty spider mite magnets...careful.
Ill snap some pics of some wild ones in the mountains here. boring flowers, but so far the heaviest scented ones i have ever seen! when they are in full bloom, the valley awakens!
as an aside, if people are having rot problems with rooting, they do way better in mineral based stuff. in the wild here they often root easily in stream beds/banks which are all rocky. cuttings are the same. I used to have huge rot problems when i used various soils to root them. switched to clay pellets or grit/rocks etc and havent had problems since.

cools plants. anyone ever notice that the variegated xcandida are a little more finicky than other types? mine grown next to a few species (in ground) always died back and seemed far more sensitive, i am guessing to lack of water, than others.
also as an aside, 2 days ago i did a large harvest of brugs leaves and flwoers for someone. i have felt their effects from previous harvests, but htis last time was cool to see. while breaking stems i just a few splashes of brugs stem juice in my eye. begin late at night and super tired i didnt rinse and carried on to try and finish. even now that eye is blurred vision and the pupil; dilated like mad. i look like a late night comedy central sketch.. that shit really is a crazy eye tonic of sorts....

Hah I had a feeling. I was actually gonna google that this morning, but never got the chance.
The other night I might have accidentally dosed myself. I will never give any to people for consumption nor will I consume any for myself. I'm worried about the unknown levels of atropine. Dead people are no fun at a party.
The other night I was pretty drunk. I had trimmed some mj plants and taken lots of leaves off the brug a week before and I hadn't cleaned any of the scissor hash off. Well in my drunkenness I had apparently spotted the resinated scissors and decided to smoke the hash.... Not thinking of all the juices that had collected, and that could possibly be active and mixed in with the hash.
Not sure if I was blacked out drunk till 6 am cleaning, doing projects, making aerated compost teas out in the shed all kinds of shit. No recollection. I woke up around 2-3 in the afternoon hungover and startd noticing things I had done. Later that night I spotted the scissors and some memory of smoking the scissors came back. Not all of the night. Maybe I was just drunk idk.
I would never intentionally dose myself or anyone else but when I'm drunk shit seems to happen.

you were certainly just drunk... you'd need more plant material to get high... my experience with solanaceae were kinda what you describe, usually fall asleep after driking the tea/eating seeds and afterward tripping strangely (real hallucinations, every senses are mobilized, vision, touch, smell, etc... but you don't realize it in live and direct, you really think what you see is happening, well...) and usually not recollecting what happened next day. Heard smoking leaves is far more manageable

I just aquired my first brugmansia today after a great deal of coveting. I came across an ad on kijiji from someone looking for unwanted cactus/succulents amd happen to notice a brug in one of their photos. I messaged to ask and they were kind enough to give me a cutting. Well actually six.
Brugmansia; Double white Double peach Single peach Single pink Single yellow And Blue Iocroma (not a true brug)
I am very excited

I ate some jimson seeds ONE time when I was 20 something. A large spoonful, what a mistake. Tripped 3 days straight, totally gone, baby sitter needed and to the ER. Hallucinations the whole time. Lizards, snakes, bugs, bug-like things and people that were not there having conversations with them. So don't eat any of the seeds of nightshade or you will be sorry. btw I could have died from the dose I took.

theres a cool mini documetnray on the "scariest drug" scop. on vice. its on youtube. scary stuff. but with things liek this, or like in wade davis's book the raibow serpent, i think a lot of the whole "zombie" deal has to do with culture. i would be very interested to see if atheist/agnostic type personalities that are not easily tricked will also have the same effects of temporary brainwashing?

Oh yeah,so before I moved to Florida last season,I gave my grandmother two yellow Brugmansia that I couldn't take with me. Well,I went over to her house today, and one of them was as tall as I !
Anyway, this is what type it is,and what amazes me is this is a purely tropical plant that can survive being outdoors here in the winter in zone 7
And here is my cutting, wish it luck!

pretty plant. Those orange ones are my favorite because they do that with their flowers. almost like shelves of flowers, unlike some other species which just spew out flowers all unorganized. very nice plant your mom has, she clearly treats it well. I'm not sure i would call them tropical though. They grow poorly, or at least not as strong, in the hot lowland tropics, but excel in the semi tropics, ie tropical country mountains. here they grow amazingly well in 500-2000m elevations here, but struggle in the sunny hot season in the flat lands. I see them growing in SW BC Canada, and even outdoors but under cover (balcony for example) year round. pretty amazing.

Here's my "big mama", living outside, next a little clone: .
She has been attackt by spidermites and lost leaves and all of her immature flowers. I think she's doing well, new shoots and sprouts everywhere around the stem and also a big and one smaller flower are dominant. .
-
At the same time one of my Datura is growing another flower. I'm curious which plant is the first to open them.

Wow, that's a nice specimen.
When I got my brugs years ago that was the vision I had, but I've finally accepted that it's not gonna happen. They don't survive the Texas winters, or the intense heat for that matter unless I water them at least every other day. I have one left and I don't know why i'm keeping it alive other than feeling guilty about letting it die.

Had six cuttings of different varieties given to me a month or two back, I managed to kill them all except for this one; the single lowly survivor. Having previously been a stick with one leaf it seems now to be flourishing, fingers crossed. I am told this one is a peach flower.

On January 11th , i stuck some brugmansia sanguniea seeds in a damp paper towel, bagged her up and placed on a heat mat beneath T5 lights. Here's the aftermath , one month later. The seeds came from two different collections , one a strbing(SFBG collection , another collected from a tree in the nieghborhood)
Seeds have very high germination rates, even ones i had given up on , gave me some lovin last night. I've got 5-10 more to plant later on, probually have 100 seedlings because i wasnt expecting them to all survive.
Have some more seeds but am going to germinate datura tonight , using the same paper towel method.
How's everybody;s brugmansia's doing ?

I was doing a Google search on Brugmansia stumps and found your post. I really hope you will see my post because I am in desperate need of help with my brugmansia.
Is there any hope of this poor Brug growing back? It suffered a drought this past summer, attacked by something that looked like sacs (tonight I realized it was spider mites) and then two hard freezes. It was mistakenly cut all the way down to the stump and then removed from the ground. I was able to get it replanted in enough time to save the last remaining stem that had grown. The black dot shown on the stump is long hollow hole, which I'm guessing was caused by rot. Thankfully I was able to save the one remaining stem after the tree was replanted and trimmed a bit from the stem to try and grow some roots. I also placed some mulch around the trunk...not sure if it will help it or not. The last pics show how it appeared 3 years ago and then last year.

I hope that stump start grows for you. Unfortunatley im not able to give any advice, i havent grown these before.
I did sow some brugmansia sanguniea seeds a month or 2 ago but sadly nothing did sprout. I might have a few seeds left and if so im going to try the wet paper towel on heatmat tec to try germinate them. I love the looks of these plants, they are so nice. I saw a Brugmansia when i was in Lissabon about a month ago.
That is some nice trumpets.

I water my brugmansias heavily/often, feed often, and cover the stumps in pipe insulation before we get hard freezes. Some plants are surprising resilient. Best you can do it keep it watered, fed, and pest free for now.

What do you feed yours with? Also what do you use for pesticide? I tried Rite Green 8-6-6 and it burned part of the trunk pretty bad. I didn't know until it was too late that fertilizer can't be applied directly to the plant.

I've never had to put pesticides on my brugmansia's when does I'll use neem oil, BT, and/or insecticidal soap.
This year I've fed them with all kinds of stuff..basically cleaned out the bins I store nutrients. Mostly organic but also some ancient synthetic fertilizers. Concentrated fertilizers can/will burn plants if used in excess especially if it's granulars sitting on the stump.
After you burned it did you water the stump/ground really good to try and dilute it?
I'd start with a diluted mixture or top dressing of organic fertilizer or better yet some compost tea.

Looks like you took a nice cutting from her. If you used a little clone dip and a Rockwell cube you could get her to root before putting into dirt. I'd love to be able to keep mine outdoor all year.
That was a beautiful plant! My buddy says brugs are one of the easiest to clone which is basically what you have done. I'd say keep the soil moist for awhile until you see new growth, then keep her watered like a normal pant. Brugs love a rich soil and lots of light. Intense light should be avoided while she is rooting. Look up how to build super soil. My brug loved it but not really necessary. Hope that helps a little. Looks like you got a few good replies already.

Just recently quelled a spider mite invasion of epic proportions. I’m worried because the plant still seems to be struggling and stressed. It’s a B. Vulcanicola. Is there anything. I should do? I was thinking some veg. focused fert and/or micro nutrient fert. In this case Fox Farm Hydroponic ferts. It lost at least 1/5th of its total leaf mass. I’ve plucked all the worst looking leaves.

Snakeeye mulching will help retain soil water and break down slowly for nutrition.
Pinktarantula make sure all spider mites are dead, it's amazing how a few small bugs can drastically effect a plant. Brugs like to be fed so as long as you don't burn them by pouring on concentrate it will appreciate nutes with watering.

Good thing I decided not to put my " Mother" Brug in the ground.
It went from the the 70's and mid 80's for highs just a couple of days ago, back down to freezing last night with highs in the 40's right now.
I put all five of my Brug cuttings in the ground the other day, and this morning, they are frozen solid.
I don't know if they can recover from this, and it makes me sick

damn, i hope they come back from the roots. It briefly got to 32 here but nothing looks damaged. my brugs root systems survived below 20f this winter and they're all coming back fine, but those are developed root systems.

Yeah, these were cuttings from my big Mother.
Some weren't even phased, it seems, but the others have leaves that turned to mush.
I'll leave em be, and see what happens.

Hi guys, newb to this thread here.
My gf brought home a Brugmansia from work (she's a florist). I've always been intrigued by this plant and Datura species.
Like with many others, it's Carlos Castaneda's fault that I am now a mushroom grower and also that now we have this magnificent plant with all it's powers.
Now I'm always very careful when it comes to these things. How do you guys go on about harvesting these things?
For example, when a flower falls off, does the bit of stem also count as flower or do I remove it? Is it best to harvest fresh leaves or wait till they drop naturally? Do I put them in the dehydrator?
I don't know if I'll ever be experimenting with any of this but at the very least I'd like to become more knowledgeable about what to do with the different parts of the plant.
Keeping it alive and growing doesn't seem to be a hard task. It was repotted immediately with some dried cow dung added to the soil mix.
Can any of you experienced guys tell me what to do with all the parts please?
Thank you.

Yeah. The seeds are most powerful With every solancae species.
The flowers are second.
And the leafs are third.
The trip is intense so if you Are planning on taking it, do Hold on.
I would suggest 1 small to Medium leaf.
You can dry it and smoke it. Or you can eat it fresh.
I would like to add with experience That smoking the leaf can Be weaker then ingesting it.
So if I was you I would smoke A third of a Dryed leaf.
But it has taken me about 20 years to get use to it.
And these days it still knocks Me back.
And you can extract it too.
Peace!

I'll be getting used to the idea first. Maybe some day I'll try.

Hey guys,

Now this is a store bought plant. It has everything but seed pods. Can I expect it to be pollinated by some moth or something or should I get a second plant for that to happen?

How reassuring you have multiple plants?
Does anyone else know how to get a new gen going from seeds from a storebought plant? Plz

I do have multiple plants, clones form my mother plant, but I have grown all different kinds of Brugmansia before this one I have now, and none have ever made any seed.

So went on google and found this link:
<SNIP> Mod edit: No non sponsor links are allowed
Mine is Arborea if I'm not mistaken and it's supposed to be the only Brugmansia that can self pollenate or something so I just tried it with a swab. It's nighttime here now so thats supposed to be right.
Now we'll wait and see. If not I'll swab more flowers from other brugs.
Need. Those. Seeds.
This plant is store bought and therefore not energetically mine. Guess if I can get seeds from it and succesfully groe those out it'll be my plant(s)
Or something

Tweeq, should be interesting. Let us know how it turns out. I have been growing various Brugmansia sp. for years, and I have never gotten viable seed.

Ok. Interesting. Didn't know this about them not producing seeds readily. Just thought it was a case of bad luck or something.
If anything changes I'll update with pics

Yeah, they always do better inside under lights. They are just bug magnets outdoors, Datura too! I'll probably not get to see nay Datura blooms this year mine are eaten up so badly with bugs. My yard is infested!

You have to have two plants from different stock, this is why I never get any seed pods either.

Tried with a swab, also no luck. It appears one must cross varieties for a chance of seed pods growing.
But more knowledgeable ppl, please do chime in..

So, my mother Brugmansia is yellow, and all the clones are from her. I would never be able to cross them, because they are from the same exact genetic make up as their mother.
Now, if I found another Yellow Brug, not from my line of plants, then I could cross them, and get seed.
I do believe this is all you have to do.

It's a possibility, they may not have to be of the same color, but I thought that since we both have different colors, that means different species of Brugmansia. Will that work? I have Brugmansia aurea, what is yours?

I've noticed that my Burgmansia tree had stopped producing new blooms after beginning doing so last month...
It also appears as though it has developed chlorosis. Its the first time I've noticed this condition on the plant so Tomorrow I'll be weeding out the base of the tree, prune all dead branches and promptly fertilize it thereafter. I'm not sure if it may have anything to do with the age of the plant. For it was already completely established when I got the place a few years ago, so I'd estimate that the plant would be at least 8 years old, Likely much older.
I'm curious if anyone has seen one of these plants go through its final years of life. would this be how it begins to manifest, or is the condition not in any way related to the age of the plant?
I've placed a few hardwood cuttings in water to propagate and one softwood cutting dipped in root starter hormones, then straight into soil. Just as a precaution in case the mother plant deteriorates any further.

They like to eat. Hard to say. You could get the soil tested. Some shops can do that for ya. I killed mine. Not enough water and too cold. It was a bad time in my life and let her go. Sucks. If she hasn’t been fed any good organic nutes I’d try that. Maybe some earth worm casting’s blood meal, bone meal, etc top dressed and watered in couldn’t hurt. Look up organic super soil.

I believe that it may be experiencing a nutrient deficiency of some sort. It was also competing with quite a few plants, grasses and weeds. I may have contributed the spread of grass around the plant when I threw mower clippings around the base as mulch last year. Won't be making that mistake again.
Regardless I've shown the plant plenty of TLC today. I've cleared the area around it of any competing plants, pruned all dead branches, taken a few more cuttings for propagation & gave it one hell of a feeding... Haven't completely finished today. Tomorrow I just need to finish layering compost and organic matter around the base and ensure that any nearby competing root systems which were too stubborn to dig out, are completely smothered and have no chance of resurgence.
here's a little "after" snapshot;
It's the first time that I've ever had easy access to all sides of the plant. I'm sure its been years since its received this much attention.

Hell yes, a Brugmansia growers thread!
My Brug just started flowering a couple weeks ago. One morning when the sun was up I went and saw the first flowers that had opened overnight. I wondered why the flowers didn't smell much. I always read about how wonderful they smell. I was confused.
I went outside the other night cause there was an opossum in the garden and noticed the flowers in all their glory. I went to look and smell and yum, smelled so good! I loved the plant even more. I thought it was so cool how they produce scent at night. The moon was shining bright that night too. How did I miss that bit of info about this plant!? Anyway...

A month and a half later and its looking much better with newly forming blooms to boot.
Almost all the cuttings I've taken seem to be doing well, two of which are thriving and only one has died.

Nice and organic. Gonna repeat myself and say I’m gonna get a cutting. Prolly trade some myc for a cut. Gotta set up a little prop area and get her ready for the spring. Thanks for the inspiration. Can’t wait to see your blooms. Would be cool to swap pollen at some point too. I did save some from my last plant definitely gonna try to do something with that on my next grow.

Btw, my brug its pretty wild in a sense of care.
Practically, I don't even water it, just prune it sometimes and thats pretty much it.
Well, anyway it's a pretty common plant around here, and this weather seems to suit it quite well

So, I actually left all my Brugs in the ground, and it's been freaking freezing out at night! So far, we have gotten down to 24 degrees.
So, this being said, even mulched, cut back to the ground, and covered with tubs, do you think that all my plants will survive a zone 7 winter, or all my babies probably mush?
I know, a lady up the rood has a huge 10 foot tall plant every year in the ground, and it's display of blooms rivals anything in this whole town, and somehow she manages to keep it alive here throughout the winter. Boy, i sure wish that I knew her secret!

I usually buy new brugmansia Plants every year. But this time I have saved one large plant. It doesn’t have any leafs or flowers On it anymore. I also have some D. Metel and stramonium plants which Still have leafs on and they all appear To be still growing. Can’t wait for next year.🤙🏻

Not me, I have had my same big girl for years. I normally bring her in for the winter but she got too big this year so I cut her back and left her in the ground. If they all do die, it wont matter though, because I cut off over 30 branches and rooted them for next season
Man, I just realized that I never posted any pics of my blooms, dang!
Well, until next year mate

This obviously was not my intention, but I'll just go with it
These are all branch cuttings from my mother plants. I think the teens did the mother plants in though, because they are still out in the ground.
This was actually my intention, but I just let them do their thing.

I think mine are all dead, we had a regular winter this year, but the previous years we have had zone 8 winters. I guess I'll know this spring.
Good thing that I took all these cuttings before the first freeze!
I don't know how I'm going to keep this thriving until i can put them out in three months.

Lucky you it's gotten freezing here and I'm not used to it anymore.
But thanks, and yes, mine makes huge yellow flowers. It's either Brugmansia suaveolens, or Brugmansia aurea, but I can't figure out just which one that I have. I wish someone knew and could help me out!

One half of my sanguinea is coming out variegated!
What is the cheapest an most efficient way of rooting these succulent stems, without rotting them?

I did this.
And now I have this!
It's going to be fun trying to separate all these and put them into separate pots this spring to sale at my plant sale.
But even if you don't do that, just take the cuttings and stick them in moist soil, until they root,That's it! Or you can just root them in water, both ways work excellent

I think, my problem is that the stems are still at their succulent stage of growth, and semi-ripe hardwood is preferable for cloning.

Thnaks! they have never looked so good! I have to constantly spray all the bugs off them with the hose all spring and summer when they are out n the ground, my yard is infested and it's pretty much a major chore to grow anything here sadly, but I don't give up!

First late winter blooms making an appearance;
All of the planted cuttings from last year have survived the winter. One of which are thriving.

It appears the mother plant is beginning to show signs of the same issue that it had this time last year;
Looks like its time for another vigorous feeding schedule. ~ This is the largest cutting so far, its tripled in height since planting. Hope to see some branching in the near future.

The general area has a lot of clay soil. Though there’s a degree of compost and topsoil mixed in that bed. It’s on a slope and there’s been some heavy rainfall recently. So I’m thinking runoff might have something to do with it.

after running into the problem in my previous post I had heavily pruned the tree and cut back most of the branches. It was quite bare initially but has since bounced back over the past few weeks;
Its only recently started flowering again. But the first one to bloom is huge, the biggest I've ever seen this burg produce.
The larger cutting is still kicking it.

I would describe it as a very pleasant sweet floral peachy smell. It’s hardly noticeable during the day and gets stronger as the sun sets. Also no deer around here, though I haven’t noticed any animals take an interest in it.

I've germinated this Brugmansia Arborea (or so i think) about 4 years ago now. Every fall i have to cut it back, burry it up, and over-winter it in the basement. As soon as the weather allows it goes back outside in full soil in the garden. Although the stem has become quite a unit and the plant grows bigger every summer, i have yet to see it flower. Kind of a shame, as it is a bit of its selling point imo. Anyone any idea how i could stimulate flowering? The plant itself receives ample sun, water and nutrients. Its quite bushy and around 1.5 - 2 m high.
Thanks!

That looks like a Datura species to me, probably stramonium. Either way, it looks healthy and I'm surprised it hasn't bloomed yet at that size...that's strange. Maybe try giving it less Nitrogen and more K, P, and Ca?

hmm im quite sure its a brugmansia tho! I've grown datura species before aswel, and they were way more "herby". All of them were also annuals/perannuals. non of them developed this tree like trunk. And i got the seeds from a passionate and reputible vendor. But then again, could be wrong. What makes you think its a datura?
I actually added phosphorus rich nutrients today! hope that does something. Do you know what triggers the flowering process? is it daylenght? or something completely else.

The leaves look datura, but I'm always open to being wrong.
Hopefully you get some flowers this year. I'm not sure exactly what triggers flowering, it's been awhile since I've had a brug tbh. The one I had that flowered nicely years ago seemed to do it when the night temps dropped some, but that may have just coincided with the age of the plant being right, idk.

dang thats a cool one. maybe it needs more light to flower? it looks like a very shady spot. they all seem bloom sporadically until they get tree sized-shaped. remember hearing that cutting taken below the Y wont flower until they Y maybe keeping it alive over winter or waking it up a little earlier inside would get it to bloom. ..

The mother Burgmansia tree hasn't flowered yet. Even though it's getting into late Spring here. A couple of months ago It was showing signs of chlorosis again. Though I've pruned, fed it & it looks a lot better now. There's not much else I can do, I'm sure it's just getting older at this point. While pruning there were a couple of the dead branches which housed ant colonies, or millipedes & pill bugs just chillin. Hope to see some flowers on this tree soon.
Thankfully the only successful cutting from a while ago is begining to flower again.

This is what I've prepared for my 15 d.metel seeds that arrive tomorrow. It's 1 litre of compost that I've sterilized in the stove and poked 16 holes into with a pen. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to make them germinate? The last ones didn't germinate until I airtightly closed the container. Maybe I'll give it a try...

Hunter hunter said: I'm surprised this thread does not exist yet. Any way I finally cut a few clones and wanted to share.
I soaked the cuttings overnight in a solution of water and non ripe black berry juice. This morning I trimmed them a bit and applied some clone X. I'm very excited hopefully all goes well.
Here are a few pics of the original plants.
Those variegated Brugmansias are awesome! I’ve never seen them before 😍
Getting some cuttings soon which I’ll start off growing in pots. One is orange sanguinea, one is double white (is double white arborea?), and another is a pink suaveolens I think. Not sure of the species exactly because the seller didn’t specify. Will update once I get them growing!
I was wondering whether these three species can cross pollinate and produce hybrids easily? Wouldn’t mind growing some crosses from seed and cloning them 😊

to my knowledge they will not make seed pods unless conditions are perfect year round it would be really cool to pull it off. i think we have the same cut of that variagated
the smells are all totally different

The smells are different between the variegated and non-variegated? They look awesome.
Ah right… I’m wondering whether far North Queensland would be close enough to the right conditions? I’m almost at sea level, get metres of rain each year, and it’s warm in winter/hot and humid in summer.
Maybe not perfect conditions. I suppose there’s only one way to find out

getting cold trying to stay below freezing now. i let them stay out as long as they could handle and they were taking the frost every morning for a month or two. this is where the moms are at, just got cut other day there's still more to do. i just stick them in water in a plastic container in ambient light, last year i just left some of them in plain water all winter and they did fine. they like plastic for some reason, when i put them in glass its less successful. they multiply quick. the yearlings are in an unheated shed there are an awful lot and i dont know what to do. its a weird climate it could be anywhere from Zone 7b-10a it just depends on the year. they call it 8 or 9 i think but its right on the "border" of everything. last year they were outside under a cover until it got below 20 but that almost killed them, luckily i caught them in time. should i bury them in a hay pile with a tarp over it? how do you deal with it?
some of the datura still alive too
